EMILY:
The town where she was born
Like the town where I was born
Was built by white settlers seeking gold and other treasures
Like me, she feels uncomfortable in the clothing of her ancestors
It's not easy, she would say
Ripping her fingers into the ashtray
It's not easy to erase your blood

JIMMY:
Rock me now
EMILY:
Ahem, sing with me
JIMMY:
In the arms of cobwebs
Roll me out
In the arms of cobwebs

EMILY:
Next she found a man to treasure
And together they planted flowers of warning, fearing frost
Late on shallow evenings while their enemies slept
They hammered the soil, asking for answers in green
His value declined when he offered his name
Why did he offer?

JIMMY:
His value declined...
EMILY:
Ah ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah
JIMMY:
When he offered his name
EMILY:
Ah ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah
JIMMY:
His value declined
EMILY:
Ah ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah
JIMMY:
When he offered his name

EMILY:
When she was seven years old she saw a man get shot, but
No one came for a long time,
Because it happened in a remote parking lot in Las Vegas
She was waiting for her mom to come back
From working the blackjack table at the Circus-Circus casino and
That night her mom said that the two of them, and the now dead guy
Were the only three people who ever really lived in Las Vegas
Everybody else just arrived,
Ate their complimentary shrimp cocktail
And left.

JIMMY:
Rock me now
In the arms of cobwebs
EMILY:
It's a one-room city, yeah, it's a one-room city here
So can you roll me
JIMMY:
Roll me out
In the arms of cobwebs
EMILY:
It's a one-room city, yeah, it's a one-room city here
JIMMY:
His value declined
EMILY:
Ah ah ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah
JIMMY:
When he offered his name
EMILY:
You rent a one-room city here,
It's a one-room city here
The wall-to-wall-to-wall-to-wall
Goes street to street to street.

Love the lyrics on this one.  Catchy.

Too bad RP no longer plays this.

What is the problem?  "White settlers?"   Nightmares from 9/11?

"I don't dislike this performance, in fact I think it's rather good. But I don't feel it beat the album version. It's mostly the bass line... it really makes the song IMO and he changed it to just one note in the verses, and to my ears it's just missing something. Not a bad thing. Just doesn't beat the album version to my ears. "

"they sound better live... "

"As a technical drummer, I now find the drumming quite simple. First time listening to this song, however, I thought it was quite unique. Metric's awesome!
it's quite common. it's just that people never seemed to play this beat too much on real drums until recent years. "

Had given it a 7, then today I listened to the lyrics -> 3

I disagree. The lyrics may not be to your liking, but they're definitely not trite:

Late on shallow evenings while their enemies slept
They hammered the soil asking for answers in cream
His value declined when he offered his name
Why did he offer? His value declined,
When he offered his name
His value declined,
When he offered his name

Or maybe they should just take the album title's advice...

For me this is a 6 with an extra 1 added for Emily Haines.

This tune has what we all need: more bass!
{#Dancingbanana_2}

I don't care if the lyricist DID read a little too much of the beat poets! This GRABS me!

I kinda dig it in a twisted Vegas lounge I don't take myself too seriously kind of way.
Ugh.. this song is garbage.

Excellent voice-over.
This is a coooool tune - like it a lot!
What a lame, lame song.
Forced and affected.  A much better variety of the same idea is done by Poe.
From the "talking" style of Robbie Robertson and many others....not a fan.

Why not play William Shatner talking his way through the song?{#Razz}

Shat would be an improvement.  As it stands, this is so atrocious I want to cry.  A solid. 1.

I enjoyed the woman speaking/singing, but the falsetto chorus just destroyed the song.  too bad.

I love Monster Hospital but this one is kind of leaving me cold...

{#No}  REALLY tired of hearing this one.

This has been a 7 for me for a year. I realized today that I was happy to hear it again and went to 8.
However, I did think it was something RP'd been playing for years. Just one? Oh.

I hear a female version of Sean Mullins...in her voice anyway.  Maybe it's the sing-talk style of the song.
I don't care much for this song.

That statement doesn't make any sense. If they were throw-aways, why would they bother remixing them?
Their newest album Grow Up and Blow Away was released on June 26, 2007 under record label Last Gang Records. Mostly comprised of songs previously recorded, Metric re-worked their early songs to create a new CD almost a decade later.
~ Wikipedia In Hollywood this is called a 'remake': milk it to the max for more money! 'Tis the way of the world...
Not again! Didn't we just hear this? This song is getting WAY too much airplay.

This is a wonderfully mellow tune. Please keep it coming!
This song would be good paired with Erin McKeown's Cosmopolitans, which I'm sure the recent commenters would appreciate as much as this.

"(clears throat) sing with me..." (I see her tapping the ash off of her cigarette and taking another swig of her whiskey as the singer falsettos along)
This band has much better songs than this one. The live it Out album is fantastic throughout and Old World Underground has some great stuff too. This particular song is from an album of throw-aways that tey decided to remix. My opinion only, of course.

Sometimes this sort of thing works. Other times, it comes out like this song.
The lyrics and presentation reminds me a bit about Nicole Blackman, a very upbeat Nicole.
So it's playing again, about the same time of day. Hope this song doesn't get played into the ground. But for now, what a nice up beat, get me going tune.
gooood beat, prose, soothing. Nice to hear RP is in a better mood today. Yesterday it seemed liked they hated the world.

Yes! She sounds so much like Idina! (you got the spelling right). Gotta love the song (and actress) that got then Pres. Clinton to moo!
Reminds me of what Lucious Jackson might sound like today.

Yeah, just dropped down from a 2 to a 1.
she certainly needs a better back-up singer.
Drivel.
Hmm . . . I think it's cool. I think. Maybe if I heard it again.
Why why why will you never learn?! Please no more of this crappy spoken word junk posing as a decent song!
There I was, all relaxed & expecting a Suzanne Vega vibe... Ouch.
She's so dumb. I saw her at bluesfest in the summer, and she was late, ignorant, and said really dumb things in an attempt to sound smart. I would like her music, if the lyrics weren't so lame and contrived...
