I'm home, lost my job, and incurably I'll
You think this is easy, realism
I've got a girl out there, I suppose
I think she's dancing
Feel like Dan Dare lies down
I think she's dancing, what do I know?

I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can't turn around no, can't turn around, no, oh, ooh
I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can't turn around no, can't turn around, no, oh no
I am a D.J., I am what I play
I got believers
Believing me, oh

One more, weekend, of lights and evening faces
Fast food, living nostalgia
Humble pie or bitter fruit

I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can't turn around no, can't turn around no, ooh
I am a D.J., I am what I say
Can't turn around no, can't turn around, ooh
I am a D.J., I am what I play
I've got believers
Believing me

I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can turn around no, can't turn around
I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can turn around no, can't turn around
I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can turn around no

Time flies when you're having fun
Break his heart, break her heart
He used to be my boss and now he is a puppet dancer

I am a D.J., and I've got believers
I've got believers
I've got believers
I've got believers in me
I've got believers

I am a D.J., I am what I play
I am a D.J.

Guess David was still into space themes?  Any ideas out there on that line?

Dan Dare is a British science fiction comic book hero, or so says Wiki.

And from here

https://bowiesongs.wordpress.com/2011/06/28/d-j/

it says

Bowie’s “D.J” comes during the transition. The DJ here is an unemployed shut-in whose girl’s left him (she’s out dancing—what’s it matter, he says) yet he still has listeners who believe in him. It might not be true—he may have lost his job as a DJ, and now he’s just spinning records at home—but it’s all he’s got. It’s the deflating of a once-public figure, Dan Dare lying down. He used to be my boss and now he is a puppet dancer.

Classic!
I like "DJ" but why is it the only song from "Lodger" that is in the RP library?
"Fantastic Voyage" hits home today and sadly it will tomorrow also.
"African Night Flight" is very good too, and lets not forget "Move On"
Not one of Bowies proudest moments.
I like Bowie alot, just not this. 5.
I have a job for DJ.
Bill....you got believers.
Hey, this isn't on Station to Station.

I am a DJ...

Then I can infer that "meh" means funky tune with seriously delicious rhythm guitar?  Or perhaps dancing song by global trendsetter?

The word "meh" is NOT in a dictionary...
It's a silly, stupid, contrived invention of the internet age...

AFAIK, Bowie's touring days are over. Heart problems I've heard.

And? This is  a real GOOD one.

Totally agree

My favorite bit in this song is towards the end when he sings "I've got believers" with a kind of hysterical despair.

This song is NOT on "Station to Station", it's on that crappy "Lodger" album.  Sorry Dave...

Love Eno's contributions, but lets not forget who was in charge nor lets not forget Tony Visconti.

mindreader   {#High-five}

I love Bowie, but he sounds so much like Byrne (who I can't really tolerate), I don't like this song much.

Okay, has ANYONE heard any rumors about a tour? It's been too long, and we miss him. The REALITY tour was fabulous...shows he still has it.
Belew = awesome!
If your white and can't dance to this sucker, you need a heart transplant!
"I am a DJ, I am what I play" Bill is this true?
Bad.
I wonder if this song is a FU to the guys who were hating on the previous song, Talking Heads' Psycho Killer.
Somebody needs to do it.

Thanks!

Lodger was a fantastic LP and way overlooked in Bowie's catalog! For those who hear Byrne or Syvian here do your frickin homework!{#Stupid}

Lodger Also, to nigelr and copymonkey, the Wiki page says it was Belew's solo.

Might be Carlos Alomar.
Over the past 20 years I've seen D Bowie 4 times in concert. Most of his work is truly excellent and groundbreaking. Excellent artist.

However, I call it like I hear it - this little gem gets more than it deserves at 2.

Thanks for the praise!...I did want to add that his vocals on this one remind me of a group of fighting chimps.
But hey...if a VH1 poll says he's good..he must me I'll make sure to base all my music information on VH1 polls from now on.

C'mon Tex - where is your usually clever wordplay. You can do better as you take on the fifth (or was it sixth) most influential artist of all time (VH1 poll).

To be specific, it was a poll of other performers and artists as to who that came before them was the most influential.  The results in order: Beatles, Stones, Hendryx, Zeppelin, Dylan, James Brown, Bowie, Presley, The Who, The Police

Two that I know you love dearly.
He gets my vote for being the "most fearless artist of all time". The man has changed his style so many times, and he is consistently excellent.

LZ 1, previously before that day had only known my dad's vast array of mambo, samba, big band, 50's standards, blues, jazz. I thought that was all there was in the world of music. Then came LZ 1. My mind was officially blown
I like the message of the song and I can totally relate.
Extra lame.

LOVE the video. So much sense of humor on display! One of my favorite Bowie songs. The best Bowie songs are bound to make some people hate 'em. That's the sign of a true genius song!
i love that "Alomar" sound!
