Thank god that's over.
Christ does this ever end?

Worst piece of music I have ever heard.
A good solid 1.
Farging horrible cover.

Just horrible.
If I'd never heard Eleanor Rigby before perhaps I'd like this better, but there is none of the emotion of the original captured in this piece.  Technically, it's quite astounding but ultimately it's a very cold and souless cover. {#Sad}
It's better if you can SEE him play.  Very unique style.
Unique style. Worth of been in RP rotation. Got 8 from me.

Exactly what I was going to say. I was shocked at first that it didn't bother me, and was actually somewhat enjoyable...but then, not so much.

Seems like he forgot what song he was playing there, for  what seems like 5 minutes in the middle.
Then, oh yeah Eleanor Rigby,  then wait, I liked that thing I just played, let me try that again.
Then, oh, guess I better just end this somehow.

Not that enjoyable for me.

Started out just fine but then drifted into the realm of annoyance.
Very few have mastered the creative genius of the album cover like Stanley has done here.  Well done, Stanley.  Well done.
I'm not old enough to like this yet.

Hey, can I use that?  It's perfect...

re: this tune.  The first 10 seconds were OK.  The rest has wandered into coffee shop open mike night territory.

Well, I see the Beatles cover police have been here. Always loved SJ's style myself.
Oh Hush, MBE : )

This is pretty cool!
Completely loses the soul of the song in a maze of technicality ... whats the point !! ... LESS IS MORE !!

In one word: horrific.

In two words: horrific horrific.
{#Frustrated}
{#Naughty}

"Fuzak"! Not bad for post-literate internet snark!

He missed a few notes.

cacophonic.
This is one of my favorite Beatles songs, but this cover is just terrible.  Seriously.  {#Stop}
"Liked the guitar work and the original song but not this song by this guitarist."

Good point! The soul of the original song is crushed for "l'art pour l'art".{#Snooty}
I would never have known this is Eleanor Rigby
Liked the guitar work and the original song but not this song by this guitarist.

It did get reviewed and went 12/13 (48%). Stanley is kind of a love him or hate him sort of player. A friend of mine who can be a pretty damn showy guitar player in his own right will often make the comment "Wow! He sounds like TWO not very good guitar players" and I can sort of see his point at times. The last time I looked I was the only one who had ever tried to upload anything by Stanley. You could try something else you know. This only goes to show that every once and awhile they let stuff like this slip through.

Seems like every jazz track on RP eventually elicits a reference to elevators, dentists, or both. Come on, people. If you're not into it at least think of something original, or at least intelligent, to say.

not diggin it my favorite beatles cover.......Wilson Pickett doing Hey Jude with Duane Allman on guitar
Eeek! This music is scaring me!
This is a really interesting cover, I like it.
His technique of playing is pretty fascinating to watch.

I wish my dentist had this good of taste. He's more the Celine Dion type of driller.

Thank you.

ok but his long version of Bolero is pretty derned epic...

Same boat.
just a bit too long though...

I saw him play this at my school in the early 90's. Simply incredible.
OMG!! I bought this album in the 1980s in England. I came home from the pub and saw Stanley on some late night program. Ran out and found the vinyl that week. Amazing. I haven't heard this in years, thank you so much for playing it. Awesome!!
I like it too ... Should I wait? Why is he doing the dance of the seven veils? P.S. This was the first song I learned to play on the guitar--not like this guy. Em and C. Easy peazy lemon squeezy.
At first I liked it...but it goes on and on.... Lowered to a 5.
Hmm the end makes me crazy. Sounds like 4 guys share one guitar and don't know what to play next

Yep, it's him... sat through that horror flick as well. I've got this album - sweet cover and all - on vinyl. He was the first artist signed to the resurrected Blue Note label. While he is technically amazing, I can't help thinking that 2 players would probably sound better than one guy trying to sound like 2 players.
Whoa there big fella; back away from the instrument
Weird! I like it!
how is that man? are you high? stanley defines the 11, always RobRyan wrote:

Love Stanley Jordan...this track...not so much. Nice to hear S.J. on RP, just a better track needed.
Wow. That's a blast form the past. Obscure then, even more obscure now.

pretty cool
Masterful, great interpretation.
quite like it, not as bad as many would like it to be...it's always nice not to hear paul mc c. voice
He turned a nice song into an irritating blur of noodly nothingness. 1
One word: WHY?

He misses a lot of notes and hits the notes too hard. Interpretive? Yes. Interesting. No. Very self-indulgent and not very good. 4.

Sounds like Christmas music from the $2.00 bin, too plinky/plunky.

wow
A Little too boring for me
There is no denying Stanley's talent, but this seems to be the wrong tempo for this sad, sad song.
Use to have a short vid of Stanley playing this live on "The Tube" (UK 80's live music show)and it was brilliant back then and brilliant now - Good stuff!
I was thinking about STanley yesterday when a cover of Stairway To Heaven got played by a couple flamneco guys. It was good but there's like 8000 flamenco guys on every corner(maybe not quite that many) annd there is and always will be only one Stanley. S0 it would seem to me that if you are going to play a cover of an uncoverable song you play it by the one guy who will make his version so unique the cover itself is uncoverable. I think that made sense.
Mesmerising
That is one sweet album cover.
Stan Jordan requires his own chapter in music history, particularly jazz and electric guitar. He ranks right up there with Leo Kottke and the rest as someone who took an instrument in a direction no one else was going. I believe he was one of the first musicians to take two-handed fretwork to this level of detail and skill. I first heard Eleanor Rigby done by him almost 20 years ago. Since then many have taken this concept and ran with it, but AFAIK, Stan was the first to do it with such flair and intensity.
Cool. Now play the version by Booker T. & the M.G.'s!
Wow! Stanley Jordan on RP. Not sure why I'm surprised to hear it here. Just another reinforcement of why I seem to have it playing all the time these days. I've been a fan of Stanley Jordan for over twenty years, since they pushed this kid out on stage in between acts at the Atlanta Jazz Festival and the crowd went so wild when he was done they had to bring him back out. Not the best track on this album, but a pretty good example of his very unique playing method. Even when you watch him in action it's hard to believe you're not listening to two guitarists.
Truely terrible ... One of the best covers I've heard of ER was by Charis IIRC.
This is a great rendition of a great song. Solid nine from me.
Gets a 9 from me. I saw him perform this when the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach was still open. He absolutely kicked ass. I had a bootleg tape of the show too!
This cover rules. Not the song, I mean the album cover photograph. That thing rules. The song, it ain't bad either. But that cover, it kicks ass.
WOW... Stanley Jordan..... Awesome
