Dig if you will the picture
Of you and I engaged in a kiss
The sweat of your body covers me
Can you, my darling, can you picture this?

Dream if you can a courtyard
An ocean of violets in bloom
Animals strike curious poses
They feel the heat, the heat between me and you

How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world so cold?
Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father too bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied
Why do we scream at each other
This is what it sounds like when doves cry

Touch if you will my stomach
Feel how it trembles inside
You've got the butterflies all tied up
Don't make me chase you, even doves have pride

How can you just leave me standing?
Alone in a world so cold?
Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father too bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied
Why do we scream at each other
This is what it sounds like when doves cry

William, you are a godsend.  A heartfelt thank you from all of us.  May we be worthy of your prowess.
Algorithm-free. One of the reasons I love Radio Paradise.
This is really missing the spirit of the original, both in the way Prince sings it and in the music behind it.  There is nothing special in the rhythm section, it's very basic and uninspired.  That just drags everything down.  The banjo is actually the interesting part, and at times the vocals get soulful, but it just doesn't hold a candle to the original and also isn't good enough to stand on its own.
It pains me to do this because I love the original, I like the Be Good Tanyas and I really, really like a couple Frazey Ford songs... But I can't go any higher than a 4 on this.
nope. Just awful,
I generally like covers of songs that are taken in completely different directions.  For example, check out Jenny Owen Youngs' version of "Hot in Here", it's brilliant.  But this misses the mark for me.   Like they're not sure what tone it should have, harmonically all over the place, disjointed.  No sir...I don't like it
Bad cover
ugh
So, wait...almost every single Dengue Fever song on RP is rated higher than this.  Fact.  I mean, yeah, this cover is not great, but there is no way that's worse than those.  I'd dare say that Prince's version is so highly regarded that this is getting rated against his version, rather than objectively as a stand alone piece.  Just a thought.
Looks like a Marmite song (sorry, I'm a brit;-)).  Not one for me though.  I liked the original too much.

What an insult to Prince's legacy
This rendition is just horrible and the vocals lame. When you cover a tune, especially from such a genius as Prince, you better make darn sure it reverent, respectful and GOOD.

Eh? Where's this rule written? Albums like "If I Were A Carpenter" are great precisely because they don't adhere to your arbitrary rules. Frankly, I've heard Prince's version enough times... I'm happy to hear a somewhat different and evocative rendition.

No way.  The Be Good Tanyas are great!  But this cover is not.

It's like a perfectly grilled steak covered in... chocolate sauce.  Just not a good combo. :(

It is diametrically opposite: they are vegetarians, and alone therefor, and the band's name, great!

What is irreverent or disrespectful about this version? The Tanyas pay proper homage IMO. It's just kinda weird, but a lot of us like this weirdness. The music & vocals work fine.

William just put it best in his comments after the song played. "Sometimes you've heard enough of the original/one version of a song. This one is now my favorite."

Personally I like the warbly vocal and banjo. And credit Prince, it's just a great song period.
They should have thought twice about covering this!

WHY???

Why not?
We were more forgiving int the 90's when we let Irish singers do Prince covers.
Is it because nothing compares to Sinéad O'Connor?
Canadian Fraser Ford has one of the most original voices in so called “Americana.” When you are this unique you always get lots of haters. She has also done excellent work in R and B with Al Green’s old band in Memphis. I guess that’s where you end up when you can’t sing as her detractors claim.
what's with that back of throat singing.
hard pass.
Ya know, I normally like their stuff at least enough to not be bothered, but this isn't that good sounding even for them.  Heck I tend to not skip the Original one

Or just music lovers?

Adds nothing to the original — except a banjo. Pass. 🤮
YUCK

Honestly, I'm neither, I just don't like it. I haven't rated it, but it's a one in my head.

Lol! I just came back in the room where the radio is playing quietly while I was out. I take a beat or two to realize what song I'm hearing in this strange new form...I get to the laptop turn it up and see the rating. Again, I did laugh. That is the lowest rating I've seen on a song that is playing on RP.  I guess for some, apparently MANY, this cover is sacrilege. Prince has been besmirched!
I say aw lighten up. I give 'em points for having the nerve to put it out there, and it really isn't THAT bad. :-)

Edit:  Even more laughs as I go down the comments! Just a short way down the page and I come across "Really?" "Oh dear..."  and "Egads!". "Egads"?  Gadzooks, who still says "egad"?!  :-)
A solid effort, but i’d just play more Prince
I like alot of their songs, but.....

Well told.
Whoa... 4.7.  Guess the band was throwing a song out there to see if it sticks.
Really??
Oh dear... I'd possibly politely applaud if it was a pub band. Just because you can doesn't mean you should!
Egads!

This is bad.
Sounds like she's intentionally avoiding hitting any of the notes of the original... {#Beat}

A butchering of the original.
Wow! {#Clap}
very interesting vocal
this song sounds good. standalone. without any connection to Prince version: same lyric, similar music but ABSOLUTELY different spirit.

easy 8
{#Whistle}

PS: how come PR brings cover diamonds? like next song for example Johnny Cash - One :)

Maybe I just don't get it.. but this sounds like anybody remaking the song.

This remake is just not that good.

Not much of a track, but at least it gives everyone something to get thoroughly stuck in to and makes for good reading...

Happy Christmas, y'all
Ruined my whole day! Isn't there a -0 for this awful song. {#Stop}

I listen to a lot of Shakira (yes, I'm willing to admit that) and she does not sound anything like Shakira.
I normally like Tanya, but the warble is killing this cover.
hi amy! {#Wave} i do like this cover, a lot! {#Music} thanx bill for keepin' this in!
Sorry if i step on anybodies toes here.. but oh boy does this performance stink.. phew, I just can not express myself how much..

Ha! I second that. Shoot em for they run now...
WHY???

I try not to make negative posts but this song just begs for it. It's one of the lowest rated songs I've ever seen on RP and it sucks. Why is it on the playlist? BillG loves his covers! But he and Rebecca are great enough to let us listeners say what we think is crap, so they have my accolades.

I'm thinking this isn't the best idea the Tanyas have had.

Or someone lost a drinking bet.

ha! love the comments.

and I love this cover.

I love a few of their songs. . . .
This is certainly not one of them.
Actually, this is one of the least annoying songs Prince does. Talented people.
Horrid music.
But done with talent.
TOTAL CRAP RENDETION OF A TOTAL CRAP SONG.

WHY BOTHER?{#Stupid}

This is just horrible. Not as bad as that Stairway to Heaven abortion by that flamenco duo, but close. That's unholy. This however is simply bad. I'm gonna go wash my ears out now.
You're nuts about Gabriela and Rodrigo....I love it...easy 10.
You've got hand it to Prince to write a song with a title this amazingly cheesy, yet the song is pretty cool. That's hard to pull off.

LMAO!
This isn't bad, and I don't even like the Tanyas.
I normally like this group's stuff, but I think this song choice might have merited some reconsideration. The drifts off into flat notes on the ends of the song lines are a little too glaring here.
My first reaction was shock at the difference of this version over Prince's. And then I remembered, I do not like Prince's music. Funny how the human animal reacts to change.
Intresting. Not sure what I think of it though. I swear she sounds like Shakira.
This cover just isn't doing it for me.
Bill, is this an accidental left over from an April 1st playlist?
3 => 2 Not sure what they were thinking on this one.
Purple rain...great album. This is not that album.
OMFG. Please. Say. It. Isn't. So.
Love the Tanyas, and love their take on this.
Thanks for playing the Prince version again. It was nice to be reminded of all the personal touches the Tanya's bring to Doves Cry. I am for ever grateful to RP for introducing me to this band
goddawful. this is an example of how a bad cover can make you hate something you thought you loved.

I usually don't rate these songs unless I really love something, but this song is just so TRULY horrible I had to add my 2.639 centavos. YUCK. DOUBLE YUCK.
I agree...this is driving me to drink. I love the original, but this is just totally devoid of everything that makes the original so good. Please never play this again!!
Just terrible. Not a fan of the Prince version but at least it had some character.
The more I hear this song, the more I dislike it. At least Prince's version has some emotion in it. This is just so flat.
I have to give it to them for doing a completely new interpretation of this song. For that it gets a 2.

I'm guessing it's because no one other than Bill would have the, er, taste? to play something like this. But that's ok, because the bad/mediocre stuff makes the 9s and 10s sound even better!
Wrong on top of wrong
This is Thuper Thucky :-P
I can't stand this singer either.
ah...no.
I don't mind The Be Good Tanyas, but this is just... annoying.

ouch. not good.
hmmm just when I thought it was over...it started up again.
I suppose this would be a pretty good cover if I could stand her vocal style, which I can't.
Awful song, awful cover. Who would want to cover this piece of shit song anyway? God! I don't get it! This is the worst I have EVER heard on RP. YUCK!

Kill this. Now. Thank you.

Jeezus, folks... lighten up. I'm not crazy about her vibrato (too affected), but it's a cool version of a good song. Got me off the couch to come rate it, if nothing else.
I have to disagree with most listeners. I thought it was quite nice.
I gave it the entire song to get better. Then Johnny Cash came on and asked "Is it getting better" (His cover of One) Sorry, it did not get better for me. Don't know why, maybe because I like the original, but this cover just does not appeal to me in the least -dave
Meh. I don't think the original song is that great, but it survived with a very unusual arrangement. It's just flat here, with not a very good performance. And I do like her voice.
I kinda like it. 6. Though I've never seen so many 1's on any other rating.

The "Shaky Tanyas" sound less and less appealing the more I hear them... especially when it's a cover like this one.

This is the same guy who just gave Hank Williams a 1. You're really throwing off the taste curve fella.
If you were nearby me, right now, as this song plays, you could hear what it sounds like when I cry... God this is bad.
I just don't like her voice.
I am liking this, I think Prince would be pleased!
