Well, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know
Oh, the dashboard melted but we still had the radio
Oh, it should've been, could've been worse than you would ever know
Well, you told me about nowhere, well, it sounds like someplace I'd like to go

Oh it could've been, should've been worse than you would ever know
Well, the windshield was broken but I love the fresh air ya know
(The dashboard melted but we still had the radio)
Well, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know, oh
(The dashboard melted but we still had the radio)
Oh, we talked about nothing which was more than I wanted you to know-oh-oh-oh-oh

Now here we go

Oh, it would've been, could've been worse than it had even gone
Well, the car was on blocks, but I was already where I want
(It was impossible, we ran it good, we ran it good)
Why should we ever even ever really even get to know
(It was impossible, we ran it good, we ran it good)
Oh, if the world don't like us, it'll shake us just like we were a co-oh oh-oh-old

Now here we go

Well, we schemed and we schemed, but we always blow it
We've yet to crash, but we still might as well tow it
Standing at a light switch to each east and west horizon
Every dawn when you're surprising and the evening was consoling

Saying, "See it wasn't quite as bad as"

Well, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know
I was patiently erasing and recording the wrong episodes
After you had proved my point wrong, it wasn't like I'd let it go, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
I just wanted to catch the last laugh of this show

Well, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know
Oh, the dashboard melted, but we still had the radio
(The dashboard melted, but we ran it good, we ran it good)
Hard-wired to conceive so much we'd have to stow it
Even needs have needs tiny giants made of tinier giants

Don't wear eyelids so I don't miss the last laugh of this show
(The dashboard melted but we still had the radio)
Well we could've been should've been worse than you would ever know-oh
(The dashboard melted but we still have the radio)
Well you told me about nowhere well it sounds like someplace I'd like to go-oh oh-oh-oh

Now here we go

Well, we schemed and we schemed, but we always blow it
We've yet to crash, but we still might as well tow it
Standing at a light switch to each east and west horizon
Every dawn when you're surprising, and the evening was consoling

Saying, "See it wasn't quite as bad as", hey

It would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know

You mean Jeremiah Green, right?
So is "the dashboard melted but we still have the radio" a reference to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles?

MM keeps me on my toes. Even their pop songs don't sound insincere. I would like to hear some Lonesome Crowded West on RP. Thanks for that track.

After 16 years this needs a bump. RIP Jeremiah Green. It would be great to hear something that really highlights his crazy unique style- anything off The Lonesome Crowded West oughtaa do

Ok, macDouchebags...  the last several songs have had the same comment.  Either contribute something useful or be silent.  Just rate the song and leave it at that or change to a different station.

I don't like this song either, but I don't go around posting crap on the boards about it unless I have something to really contribute.  I'm not going to say that all of my posts on every song is filled with the wisdom of the ages or has enough depth to drown a legless wiener dog, but at least I don't air my knuckle-dragging and completely inarticulate attitude for everyone else to see.

No?
Johnny Marr's guitar makes this whacked-out madhouse of a song AMAZING, and every time I hear it, IT FREAKS ME RIGHT OUT. (And reminds me of Mom's poor dead Saab 93 that sat in our driveway awhile, and my little brother and I got to sit in it and pretend we were driving like maniacs "out to California to see Uncle George, in Santa Monica..." and yes, the AM/ FM radio was sure fun in those days.)

Heh, it's been 10 years, you probably won't see this but [DON'T FEED THE TROLLS]. I know it can be soooo irritating to witness people aggressively asserting their ignorance and intolerance that eventually you lose patience and all reason and fall into their trap. But... someone else comes along and gives you the opportunity to passively insult those idiots by replying to them in the third person. :-) :-)
When this album came out, I rushed to buy it and barricaded myself in my room with a big sack of weed. The letdown was devastating. Pretty much every prior album, all the way back to Brock's Ugly Cassanova days, I had held in a nearly religious reverence. To hear this pop trash sellout garbage broke my heart. 13 years later (can't believe it's been that long) it's grown on me quite a bit. Artist evolve, and sometimes it's in a different direction than ones own tastes or appreciations, which aren't static either. The old Modest Mouse stuff I have had to move to my 'nostalgic reverence' shelf. I would be excited to see a new album come out, for curiosity sake if nothing else.
Damn!! Ima gonna hurt myself at the gym!! Great tune!!
Nice to hear this one on the station again!

Exactly.

I like this song and I kinda hate it at the same time. The parts I like and the parts I don't like are all mixed up. I hope it doesn't cause permanent damage.

The first few notes showed such promise but it sank quickly.  Disappointment.

When I first heard them I did not care for them much, but after hearing The Lonesome Crowded West through a couple times I was hooked.  Good road trip music.  The Moon and Antarctica is a very fine album too.  Give them a few spins and you might change your mind like I did.  This album's sound is much poppyer and not as dark as their earlier work.

How about defending the song instead of personally attacking the critic? This happens in a lot of venues, and it's become some sort of accepted way of behaving, but I strongly disagree that it's appropriate. Can we stick to talking about the music?

I saw them open for R.E.M. in Toronto last June.  I wasn't at all impressed.  Maybe it's because they followed The National who were fuckin' awesome..."I'm Mr. November, I won't fuck this over"

Of course they are modest.  You never hear of anyone bragging that they are hung like a mouse.

If you like them you must own, "Good news for people who love bad news" as well. Also "The Moon and Antarctica" is pretty good too. Enjoy.

Have you heard this album? They just keep getting better. Don't get me wrong, but I use to listen to MM since Building Nothing out of Something. Fly in a jar, spitting venom, and so many others are great on this album. Dashboard is just overplayed.
I don't find this as annoying anymore since I don't hear it on the radio every day. Actually, I don't find myself listening to radio too much these days.

This song is played endlessly on a local station "The River". I did a 2 hour guest host gig a couple of weeks ago and almost played this song. kinda sucks
For me anyway, they are becoming less interesting and less relevant as they become more commercially viable. Somehow being randomly grating doesn't necessarily equate to being edgy. I did enjoy seeing them live though.
Looking forward to seeing them Sunday...

Definitely inspired by Talking Heads. But that's better than being uninspired.
Ick...make it stop....
Every time I hear this, I'm reminded of just how bad Oingo Boingo sucked. I'd rather hear Modest Yahoo than this swill. What caused Johnny Marr to fall from the rezor-edged guitar work that made the Smiths worth listening to, down to this? Was it drugs?
They remind me of a modern Talking Heads, especially how the song ends. I'd never heard this before. I wish we had an FM station in my area that would even think of playing it. We have Classic Rock, Soft Rock, really bad Pop, Rap, Country, insufferable Jazz on one college channel and NPR talk radio on the other. Except for Car Talk and All Things Considered, I don't even turn the thing on.
Loved this song the first 40,000 times I heard it... actually still like it anyway...
Is this RPs theme song...
