Lyrics:

Another sunny day, I met you up in the garden
You were digging plants, I dug you, beg your pardon
I took a photograph of you in the herbaceous border
It broke the heart of men and flowers and girls and trees

Another rainy day, we're trapped inside with a train set
Chocolate on the boil, steamy windows when we met
You've got the attic window looking out on the cathedral
And on a Sunday evening bells ring out in the dusk

Another day in June, we'll pick eleven for football
(Pick eleven for football)
We're playing for our lives, the referee gives us fuck all
(Referee giving us fuck all)
I saw you in the corner of my eye on the sidelines
Your dark mascara bids me to historical deeds

Now everybody's gone, you picked me up for a long drive
(Picked me up for a long drive)
We take the tourist route, the nights are light until midnight
(Light until midnight)
We took the evening ferry over to the peninsula
We found the avenue of trees went up to the hill
That crazy avenue of trees, I'm living there still

There's something in my eye, a little midge so beguiling
Sacrificed his life to bring us both eye to eye
I heard the Eskimos remove obstructions with tongues, dear
You missed my eye, I wonder why, I didn't complain
You missed my eye, I wonder why, please do it again

The lovin' is a mess, what happened to all of the feeling? (All of the feeling?)
I thought it was for real, babies, rings and fools kneeling (Babies, rings and fools kneeling)
And words of pledging trust and lifetimes stretching forever
So what went wrong? It was a lie, it crumbled apart
Ghost figures of past, present, future haunting the heart

Which reminds me of the old joke about Peter West, who used to compere the old BBC TV show Come Dancing and had an 'idiosyncratic' dress sense:

Q: Why does Peter West wear leather trousers?
A: So that he can come dancing.

I'll get me coat...

They have this 60's sound ... {#Think}

I'm guessing you posted this before hearing The Delays.  Quite the convincing female vocal, that. But not.

This song's OK.

Kink-ey...........

Amazing album, great song: 8 from me!

Their new album "Write About Love" is great as well.
So what's wrong with "pop"? In this case the song has a beautiful, complex and catchy melody. Hard to beat.
Bouncy — I gave it a 2.
After listening to this song many many times in the car, it's gone from a 6 to a 9... not even sure why, but it just keeps growing on me!

Swore it was the Kinks before I looked.

Nice follow-up to the Cure's "Just Like Heaven."
Barry: Holy shite. What the f*** is that?
Dick: It's the new Belle and Sebastian...
Rob: It's a record we've been listening to and enjoying, Barry.
Barry: Well, that's unfortunate, because it sucks a**.

Now lets see if Bill can sell 5 copies of  "The Three EPs" by The Beta Band.
Hooray!  More B&S!

I've been listening for 6 years and it's because of RP that I actually own some B&S. While I'm not always in the mood for them, it is quite likable and fits in the eclectic programming nicely.

I wasn't looking at the RP page, but heard this playing and said, "Huh, this is nice, I really like it." Imagine my surprise to find that it was Belle and Sebastian, a band I don't usually care for. I give it a solid 7.

Ain't that the truth. This could be a new release by any one of several "contemporary" bands.

Long time listener (2004), long time lover of this band and this song (made possible by RP). Born in '77, so not a baby boomer, and can listen to all of B&S' albums in a day and keep on smiling.
I do like this song, but I'm not sure if it really is a good song or if I like it for the nostalgia factor. No rating.
hey, Does anyone know when B&S are releasing a new album? "Life Pursuit" was a great one. Always will give them a 10 and I do enjoy them em large doses...
Pick 11 for football, and the ref gives us F*** all - they must scousers. Or maybe there were 11 players per team at the superbowl last night?
Umtata umtata
In limited doses, I find Belle & Sebastian to be lots of fun.
B and S are one of those bands that you obviously like if you are cool. I don't like 'em too much. What do you think that does for my self esteem? This particular song is pretty decent, I think (6)
This is the worse of the 80s pop sound
i've been wondering where belle and sebastian had gone..haven't heard it in a while on RP

I really, really hate this genre of music, and yet I can't help but listen. Sort of like that irresistable urge to gape at a car crash. You know it's bad, but you just...can't...stop...watching.
I really can't understand why anyone wouldn't love this song. It's the combination of a poppy tune (however indebted to The Kinks), the trebly production, and the camp and ironic but still somehow resonant lyrics that does it for me: " I hear that eskimos remove obstructions with tongues, dear". Gorgeous.
I could never figure out whether they are supposed to be ironically campy or self-righteously serious about their music. Even their songs are bipolar.
I can't believe how lame this band sounds...they sound like Spinal Tap when they were the groovy/smarmy 60s band playing "Listen to the Flower People".

Indeed. The kind of "happy people" who are rushed one morning into the emergency room of the nearest hospital with everybody saying "I don't understand! They always looked so happy!". Bump from a 4 to a 7.
i took a photograph of you in the herbaceous border.

By drawing attention to the fact that you don't engage in a certain behavior, you are implying that there is something wrong with those who do engage in said behavior. If you truly believed there was nothing wrong with watching gay porn, you would not need to go out of your way to explicitly state that you do not watch it. (Despite being a self-styled expert on gay porn soundtracks). Not to mention that "Not that there is anything wrong with that" is a joke from Seinfeld. (Not that I watch Seinfeld. I mean I like jews, I just don't watch that one show. I mean millons do, just not me.)
Always think I'm hearing the Swimming Pool Q's when I hear this: When Bells Ring.
