I checked out  Katie Melua. She is a very good singer but I don't think she is so good that she make the entire genre pointless. There seem to be a lot of interesting retro jazz singers coming out these days. Many seem to be using different models from the past greats. A lot of them are getting well deserved air time (IMHO) here.

Oh I'm sorry, I've really tried to like her, but since Katie Melua came around this backward-looking jazz seems increasingly pointless. Other commentators have pointed out her similarity to Billie Holiday, but Madeleine Peyroux's incredibly weak last note on this unimaginative rendition of Leonard Cohen's rather enjoyable romp is, in my extremely humble (and prepared to be proved wrong) opinion, a terrible let-down. I truly regret...

They get major kudos, they changed it up a bunch.  The way that Cohen plays it, especially in concert, is almost like a slow polka, almost like a borderline mournful klezmer band.  He keeps it straight ahead 2/4 time and plays it even.  This cover swings!  You can tell Peyroux and her band are really enjoying the material and that care shows!  They've earned a very solid '9' from me!

Saw Madeleine earlier this year in NYC.  She opened up for Judy Collins.  Thought Madeleine was the headliner of the show.  She only played about a 40 minute set, and we left after she was done.  She was wonderful to see live.  Looking forward to seeing her again in the future, hopefully as the headliner of a concert so it's longer.  Love her music.
