Let's take a ride to the easy plateau
Where the cold don't come and the wind don't blow
Moonlight flickers on the water below
The orange grove blossoms in the orange grove
Bad nights lead to better days
It doesn't matter but I think about it anyway

I want an easy plateau, some place to rest my head
I want an easy plateau, some place to rest my head
For a while, for a while, for a while, for a little while

Sleepyhead, come on let's take a ride
To the easy plateau in the back of your mind
Up through the alley, take the door under the stairs
My head ain't feeling nothing but cats and rocking chairs
Bad nights lead to better days
It never happens but I think about it anyway

I want an easy plateau, some place to rest my head
I want an easy plateau, some place to rest my head
For a while, for a while, for a while, for a little while

How do I hold on to you
If I can't hold on to me
How do I hold on to you

I want an easy plateau, some place to rest my head
For a little while

I want an easy plateau, some place to rest my head
I want an easy plateau, some place to rest my head
An easy plateau

Bumped up to an "8"! Play it again and maybe it'll make it to a "9"!

Tough crowd, 6.6 isn't bad.

I hate the fact that he is despicable but I still love his music.
For a minute it sounded like "I want an easy ____ ho"

How is 2 out of 10 "Marginal" in the rating system? Assuming marginal means "marginally good", shouldn't that be more like a 4 or 5 out of 10? 2 out of 10 is pretty awful. 1 out of 10 is an automatic turn it off/leave the room/throw a shoe at the computer bad. Just sayin.

"Marginal" by some definitions can mean "close to the lower limit of qualification, acceptability, or function" or "of questionable or minimal quality", which is probably why the word is used for a "2" rating.

If 2 meant "marginally good", wouldn't it be labeled "marginally good"?  In context, "marginally listenable" seems more likely.

If you weren't "Just sayin", what would you be doing instead?
nice song  : )

Weak beer.
This time, hearing the lines "nothing but cats and rocking chairs" and "moonlight flickers on the water below" reminds me of playing it from my MacBook on the balcony of my beachfront bungalow at Ngapali Beach, Burma, where there was no Internet, no TV, and nothing but the simple pleasures. A pile of shrimp was a dollar, a whole lobster, three. The sand was white, the coconuts, free. The Bay of Bengal shusshed and hissed its endless mantra, and Life was an Easy Plateau...

Wait a minute here - you write about yourself in the third person?  Someone will have to advise Bill of this grievous indiscretion.

The original poster forgot to mention name calling, which would also not be part of this "idiot's paradise".    Maybe it's not such a bad place if poorly named.

A kind of rollicking rhythm that makes you like to rock in your would be rocking chair!

Well said !

I love hearing this at all the major crossroads of my life...seems to make a good marker, over the years, wired into the RP Stream...
Lovely blend of Turin Brakes, Youngbloods etc as pointed out below.  It must be wonderful to be talented enough to develop your own sound whilst paying your respects to others that have come before.

For me it's Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter (and long before both of them, something I can't quite put a finger on. Late '60s guitar? Buffalo Springfield?)

Yes - I'm reminded of Jefferson Airplane.

Ok he can be a bit patchy but 90% of his output is very good. Always like his instrumentation especially with the Cardinals and playing with Neal Casal.

Agreed. I miss the awesome rapport between RA and NC (and the rest of the Cardinals!)

This song is marvelous...
One of his best post Wiskytown CDs!

I wonder about this myself.  I like or love almost every song played on RP.  Occasionally I will hear song I don't particularly like.  Maybe I will turn down the volume, or switch music sources, but I never feel the need to express my dislike to anyone else.  I don't understand why someone would bother with the negative energy.

BTW, good to hear a little RA on RP.

Because he's Jerry Garcia.

nice...can't tell whether this reminds me of Panteras 'Walk'......Burning Spears 'Black Disciples'...or White Zombies 'Thunder Kiss 65'....
Sounds like... early jefferson airplane. I give it a 7, but I liked that era.

Thought this was Lindsey Buckingham.

Love the surf guitar.

7 first listen.

I guess it's not just me that hears the Garcia influences in the guitar playing (there are probably 5 other such comments below and this will show that I didn't bother to check). My comment is based on Bill's segue from here into Sugar Magnolia (8/15/09).
Simply a great song!
The whole album is terrific. I know he gets, and maybe earns, a lot of crapola 'cos he's a tad arrogant about his talent—so we shouldn't like his music? That's sorta like saying you shouldn't like Jerry Lee Lewis 'cos he's also an arrogant SOB. Pay attention to the music and let the folks close to them deal with their personalities, right?

I always think that I should like Ryan Adams, I love alt-country in general and liked Wiskeytown but his solo songs just leave me flat.  I even bought this album and I couldn't tell you a single song off it after listening to it a few times.
me too . I second that. {#Whistle}
This thing is growing on me...creepy

Much more accurate than all the Grateful Dead comparisons. And, in my opinion, much more of a compliment.
why isnt the artist including the cardinals? after all i don't think ryan adams (for now anyway) is going to release anything under his name, but just as the cardinals.
Obviously there is a Garcia-inspired guitar drive and general sound, similar to their 1970s sound, to my ear. However, I cannot see how anyone is likely to confuse Ryan Adams with the Dead or any components thereof.

Definitely a bit of Zeppelin going on here. I like it.
Great room sound
Bit of Robert Plant goin' on here ...
yuk
Has anyone ever seen Ryan Adams, Ben Folds, and Dana Carvey in the same room? I sense a conspiracy here. bb

Not at all. This is definitely a lesser Ryan song, but it's still Ryan. Or a reasonable facsimilie.

Quite likeable. But if RA could talk Ry Cooder into handling the steel pedal line on this cut, it would be godlike.

Ryan was going through a Grateful Dead phase when he recorded/toured this record --- in Toronto he did a 15 minute version of Wharf Rat that I would kill to have in my jukebox.

You're mentioning those 2 in the same breath? My God!!!
The voice here sounds like what you'd get if you combined Jerry Garcia and KD Lang. Sounds alright, but not a very good visual.
I love this song...
Yay, I just sang this song out loud in the office and my co-worker is watching me in silence and smiling sweetly :)
Ryand Adams and the Kansas City Royals...
Ryan Adams has been and continues to be underrated...very cool.

Them there is some bad vocals. And yes,I agree with the comments that say this is almost bad enough to be the Dead. However since the artists seem somewhat conscious and interested it doesn't sink to that level of non-music.

Incredibly haunting pedal steel here. Nice.
Cranky (but happy?) Jefferson Airplane. Gotta get this one!

Very 60s. Not bad.

All I know is that I'm a swooning fan of this song. There's something about it that's just so sexy......
When I heard the vocals at the beginning of this track I thought this was McCartney...Not sure why.

My thoughts exactly...there's such a GD vibe on a couple songs from this album...not always a good thing for an artist.

Here I am, again, happily finding myself and RP up here on this Easy Plateau... Yes, always and ever, please take me back up to that Easy Plateau! Groove on, Bill and RP... THANKS!
All RIGHT! I was wondering when I could get back up to Easy Plateau...been a couple months... LOVE IT! and thanks, Bill and RP!
Thanks for the update on your status there orpheus. Ryan Adams is great.
still a putz
Jerry Lives! in this song
This song just never fails to put me in a fabulous mood... It evokes peaceful vistas of grassy meadows and Flatirons and lenticular clouds and the scent of red pines after a mountain-top squall... Keep on digging, Bill!
Sounds way too much like the Dead for me to like it....guess that's probably a good thing for some people.

I so much wanted to hate this song, but it has grown on me. Kind of like that plantar wart that I loved to pick at.
