I won't take all that they hand me down
And make out I smile, though I wear a frown
And I'm not gonna take it all lying down
'Cause once I get started, I go to town

'Cause I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

And I don't want to ball about like everybody else
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else
'Cause I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

But darling, you know that I love you true
And do anything that you want me to
Confess all my sins like you want me to
There's one thing that I will say to you
I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else
And I don't want to ball about like everybody else
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else
'Cause I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

Like everybody else
Like everybody else
Like everybody else
Like everybody else

If you all want me to settle down
Slow up and stop all my running 'round
Do everything like you want me to
There's one thing that I will say to you
I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else
And I don't want to ball about like everybody else
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else
'Cause I'm not like everybody else
I'm not like everybody else

Like everybody else (like everybody else)
Like everybody else (like everybody else)
Like everybody else (like everybody else)
Like everybody else

Just like everybody else, I'm not like everybody else.
Jimmy and the Boys version of this is a cracker.
In my head, this song is faster and more aggressive and I like it better.  Tried the Camper Van Beethoven version but that wasn't it either.

Scarred for life!
Can't stand this tune. Not because of the lyrics, which I love, but it's just such a noisy irritating sound.
I hope they play this at my funeral....

Nothing really.  It is yet another hormone-influenced stage of life.

Here is the reward.  You survived intact and... I dunno learned a thing along the way.... then you can look back on how much older you were back then and how much younger you are now.    Works for me.

Is that a h/t or an apology to Bob Dylan?
We get it already!

Was great when they used it for Tony Soprano. Perfect!

Romantic individualism.

Yes.  And I'm glad it's over.

Very weak song. Love the Kinks though, ten years ahead of their time.

What?  By the way,the word you were probably looking for is spelled "rationale".

No.
Nostalgia rules here, great B Side.
Great to hear this track again, thanks RP

Who's singing for most of this? Because when Ray chimes in a few times right at the end, it's a blessed relief.

That's his brother, Dave. His singing is OK by me on this.
Reminds of that Sopranos episode that featured this song.
Thanks! This song was running through my mind just 2 days ago. Nice to hear it here on RP.
Great Kinks tune. All those who thought 1976 was the birth of Punk should take a listen to this biting Kinks classic. There is however a far superior live version of this track on YouTube that has all the anger and emotion that this version lacks.
Who's singing for most of this? Because when Ray chimes in a few times right at the end, it's a blessed relief.
This is great, but for me the Chocolate Watch Band's version is better. Would love to hear that on RP.
{#Music} Incredible! Such a good song from the year when my parents wasn't even planning having a child... :))
Love the Kinks {#Hearteyes}

I doesn't sound 50 years old, does it?
The reason I love this song (besides because it's the Kinks) is because we all think we're not like everybody else. They go about trying to exclaim it, but in doing so they are really showing that we all are like everybody else.
{#Dancingbanana} My anthem!
Does any other single song capture so well the implicit drive to conform of the 60s counter culture?

In looking for the Camper Van Beethoven version (cause i'd never heard it) i found this live version by The Kinks -

The Camper Van Beethoven version can be found here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3rmEa64pGU
(but it didn't really get me)

It's this kind of "rational" that inspired the stupid murder of John Lennon.
the tune for disc №3 or 4 in the imaginary "Kinks Greatest Hits".5.
I repeat myself like everybody else...
This song would sound cool with a punk rock treatment.
Not the Kinks most shining of moments in song craft. A solid 2.

Not a great tune but a '60s classic nonetheless. It's angry but pointed. It's a Well-Respected Man with a bad attitude.
Love this song!  {#Good-vibes}
After the 20th time Ray sang he's not like everybody else, I got it.  Didn't need the last 10.
Not my favorite Kinks song but a refreshing break from You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and all the other Kinks' klassics
Freedom Rock?

Please stop screeching. Your sickening adolescent voice make me want to put on some steel toe shoes and kick the hell out of my speakers.
I had to put my hand over the speaker.
What goes around, comes around.
Song is very contemporary.
Dig it.

You really don't got me.
This sounds like it was recorded in a submerged phone booth.
Still, it's a nice curio, an echo of the free-spirit era. Glad it's in the rotation, it keeps the memories of those days alive.

I appreciate the kinks, but this song just gets under my skin because of its repetitiveness

If they would have continued in this vein, they'd have been like almost everybody else who was in a band.  Not famous. This song sucks so hard I can hear the amp sound cones vibrating in reverse. Listen closely, you'll hear it, too! {#Yes}

You'd have to go futher back than this gem. Start with "Tear it Up" by the Rock and Roll Trio (with Johnny Burnette) from 1956.

Awful sound! Needs to become released!
Some of the early Stones stuff sounds pretty nasty sound quality wise also so it wasn't just the Kinks. I do think the Kinks were trying for a certain amount of grunge in songs like this however. Doesn't make me like the song any less but better sound quality would be nice on some of their stuff.

Good post kcar. That's one of the things that always frustrated me about The Kinks, even their more ambitious records sound really crappy. If you're going to take the time to write great songs—which they did—why not put a little more effort into making them sound better?

A band whose live stuff is usually better than it's studio output.  Rare actually.

Back in the day, Dave shredded his amp speakers to get the distortion that he wanted.  The alledged originator of Heavy Metal guitar with the track You Really Got Me.

 kcar wrote:

I've read that the Kinks often recorded in the studio with less than ideal equipment, which lead to an inferior sound and in the long run, less long-term fame. Their records sound more dated than their contemporaries.

All the above could be quite wrong, but the Kinks deserve more recognition and airplay these days...

No, the logic does not follow. If everyone is unique, then no one is like everybody else, however, that is wishing for too much.
tis true

we are unique

Just like everybody else
