This is a wonderful album. I played it a thousand times since it was released. Still wonderful!
This was a bit all over the place, not what I expected after the first beats. And I liked it! Also I'm proud that I recognized Byrne's voice before checking.

Was going to see him touring for this album in '89. Then the big earthquake hit California just a few days before and the show was cancelled. Missing the show wasn't the biggest tragedy of the EQ, but it was still a big bummer.
It's 2:00 Friday afternoon on a warm spring day, the windows are all open, the boids are chirpin' and I'm sitting down to work after having a nice tostada lunch. I'm pretty sure Bill knows this and that all I really want to do is take a nap and so he's doing his best to help keep me awake with this one. And I think it's working, except now all I want to do is DANCE!

Feel bad saying this, but this would be so much prettier if someone else were singing it. The groove is to die for, and I love David Byrne's voice for other songs, but to me it seems at cross purposes.

My brain is going to explode! Byrne/TH have a massively diverse catalog. I might at least understand how you got that impression if you put this comment on a track from Stop Making Sense or something, but this sounds nothing like any of his other stuff. Just what?

Not only do I think you are completely right in this, but it is apparent that not only is a little knowledge a dangerous thing, but when combined with a self-conscious, self-regarding sense of sophistication, the result is neither smart nor insightful. I fear that this describes too many listeners.
Obviously, it is not possible to please everyone. However, the general and apparently deeply felt antipathy for David Byrne (at least on the part of a goodly number of listeners here) is a bit difficult for me to understand. For me, he continues to be interesting and sufficiently quirky enough to merit attention. If nothing else, there is no small amount of humor in his music.

DB and Mambo, razors and rum. Why DB thinks this sounds good is amazing. One of the few ones I have given to any RP song.
Love Byrne and TH, hate this.
This album, and his collaboration on the Brazil Classics (Beleza Tropical) added a dimension to DB that catches many folk out. He was SO recognisable as Talking Heads, and thats all people expect him to be. Very very talented fella.
Gotta love this guy.... he's such a talent.
The really great thing is he has this INCREDIBLE brass section, and Celia Cruz, in one of her last recordings

Can't say I agree with the first statement, but the latter is right on! I bought this album as soon as it came out and it took me a couple of months to enjoy it. I kept wishing it were in Spanish. But, it is what it is. Went to iTunes and bought it all over again this summer!

Love it. DB ran a history of Latin music series in his podcasts for a few months, and (sorry, Bill) I loved every minute of it. It's kind of cool to see either where it came from or what he did with it.

I like this song and I've tried on more than one occasion to upload some Latin music including a couple by Tito Puente but they've all been squashed. So, I suppose if RP listeners actually liked real Latin music it would be on the playlist. Until they're ready for the real deal this will have to suffice...

LOVE that Latin beat! It makes me want to dance at my desk (and my co-workers would think I'm nuts)!
I first heard this coming from a Jeep at Killington, VT after skiing. I asked the guy playing it and had to go buy it. The whole disk cranks!
I'd like to take this opportunity to assert my latin-ness in certifying the awesomeness of this song. Not a "10" awesome, but at least an 8-awesome.
When she did "Mi Tierra," Gloria Estefan hired all the awesomest Cuban musicians to back her Cuban ass up, and the album comes off feeling like a Disney World representation of what Cuban music sounds like.
Most if not all of David Byrne's Latin music efforts sound infinitely more authentic than a lot of Latin musicians' music. Props.

I saw him do this album live with a 12 piece latin band. It was unbelievably fabulous!
This is pleasant background music, but little more. It strikes me as unimaginative. Never thought I'd refer to anything Byrne did in such a way, but there you go.

Bought this album many years ago, after Byrne's Brazilian compilations came out. Took me awhile to get into it - I kept waiting to hear Spanish, but I got over it. Great album. Now I need to go out and get a new CD of Beleza Tropical. Fabulous album!
I don't know where this one vanished to, but hearing it again makes me happy. I love this song, and it is a great album too (must replace it!).
I'll be in the minority with this comment: This is one of my favorite David Byrne songs. The drums, the horns, the groove, the laid back vocals - it's all heavenly to me.
I know there are better songs in this genre and better Byrne songs in his catalog, but this one is one of my favorites. It makes me smile and sway.

You make some very good points, and I concur, but you can't take her (his?) comments seriously. She's (He's) a "cat" maven, an expert on cats, not music. (I suspect we'll have to wait till Bill plays some "Stray Cats" to get something really interesting.)
The music is great but Byrne's vocal style is horribly incompatible with it.

rei momo - no doubt one of my favorite albums of all time. def. in my top 5. this song has so many things about it that i just adore... the beat, the fun, the words, it's a great mix!

Loved this CD, saw the tour as well... excellent! David Byrne was partially responsible for my deep foray into brazilian music that continues today.
Great album. I had it on cassette tape and wore it out. Melted in the car or something.
