Absolutely, NOTHING  played on RP deserves a 3 or less!! I don't feel sorry for these people!   And, they wonder why nobody wants to talk to them!   LOL!
looooooooooove this tune in any genre!

though you cannot beat Paul's original guitar mastery
Interesting how the first several notes of the main riff start off the same as the "Little House On The Prairie" closing theme.

Epic mix again by Bill
Jimi Hendrix=> The Duke => The Stone Roses

I predict that in 100 years we are going to distill big band swing down to "Duke Ellington" the same way we think of all marches as John Phillip Souza.  If the Duke is the only one remembered for that era of music, I'm OK with that.

That's quite true. I'm listening to it on the Main Mix.
'Sir Duke', indeed.

He was definitely a looker in that B&W pic.
And that beat and those horns... wow!

Yes, you're right. It's you. The Duke fits just about anywhere, including or especially here.

It'd sound a Hell of lot better without the Police in the background.

The Police have clearly decided to walk on ALL the moons!

How high the moon
Though the words may be wrong
We're singing it
Because you ask for it
So we're swinging it just for you ...

Barney Bigard left the band in 1942. The solo was likely played by Russell Procope.

Thanks for the information. I hadn't thought he'd left that early. Since this recording is probably from 1947, that would be Procope on clarinet.
It seldom gets any better than this. This is happy music. Listen to that clarinet. :)

I did some poking around. While Ellington and Goodman certainly knew each other, I can't find any cite that would suggest that they ever recorded together. Bigard was Ellington's clarinetist for a couple of decades.

Hot Jazz at its finest
Amazing how hard it is to find a decent recording of this. Most of them have fake stereo created by splitting it in frequency bands and distributing these across left and right, which produces a sensation of “I am sitting in a tiny restroom stall”. And many have aggressive noise reduction on top that sometimes completely removes all music altogether. Eventually I found a decent mono version in iTunes on "Duke Ellington & His World Famous Orchestra" from 1992.
Only way to improve this is w Ella singing the lyrics.

I love that RP has this kind of stuff in the mix.

Leave it to Bill.
This is "way cool"!
Thanks

Did you catch Jeff Beck playing this one on the Grammys this year?  What fun he looked like he was having.

It may sound silly, but this song rocks!
July 20th, 2009 - The 40th anniversary of the moon landing. As usual, Bill is on top of things. I was a wide-eyed 7 year old when I watched it on a black and white TV. Amazing! Thanks Bill.
Pass me my fringe dress. A scotch and a fat cigar would go well with this song!
LET'S SWING
What an interesting choice. Thanks for not playing "Take the 'A' Train," "Mood Indigo" or any of the other obvious choices. Having said that, I would have picked one of about 50 other gems, but not this one..only because I've never heard it before! ANYTHING by the Duke and his men is worth playing and celebrating! Thanks!!!!! One more reason RP rocks!
The king of all, Sir Duke!
Can't keep my toes from tappin!
This man is the real "King"
My, oh, my.
I just missed it!!! Damn, that lunchtime walk....
