There's almost nothing left
And you eat my kind for breakfast
What did I expect, to come here and find anyone?
Find open arms to greet me and friends to feed me
I sicken myself so much
And you eat my kind for breakfast, you eat my kind...

(chorus)
Whatever I fear the most is whatever I see before me
Whenever I let my guard down
Whatever I was, ignore it
Whatever I fear the most is whatever I see before me
Whatever I have been given
Whatever I have been...

Seeing myself this way, I am a monster I believe
Seeing is believing, is there no doubt left?
When I wake up I poison myself,
And poison gives no appetite
I sicken myself so much
Sicken myself so...

(chorus)

Do we expect these things to change
By waking up and suddenly there they are?
And all I need's a starting place
And nothing ever seemed so hard

I'm intrigued that there are certain bands that I immediately dislike. This band, the Doors and Jefferson Airplane do that. I can understand why others might like it, but not I.

Maybe you don't give them an n-th chance and leave them behind immediately? Or you don't look into the verses? The Doors are brilliant.

OK, but I like Dulcinea much better.

Perfection. But then again, nearly everything Toad does is perfection.
Sorry, you are right, I happened to be living in England when they were omnipresent on the waves, so made the wrong assumption.
Love me some Toads!! Very under rated group!! I believe they are out on the road again. I saw them 3 years ago, they killed it...still amazing!
...they're from southern california, actually...
They're English,

Stop it, just stop it. There is no relation, none whatsoever. Why the non-sequitor?{#Stupid}

I came to the forums for this same reason. I've done some searching and can't find a connection between Toad and Rob Thomas.
Ahhhhh......Toad......{#Notworthy}

Tell us what you really think...wow!   {#Razz}

Maybe it's just because it's 7:41 am, but this song is way outta place...

you eat my kind for b-fast...one of my fav toad songs...
Who eats his cat for breakfast?  And why?
This album helped me through a rough patch in the late 90's.

God bless the Toad.

Toad blows Gin Blossoms out of the stratosphere!

I might have been able to let this song slip by my radar, but in light of your analysis I just about have to give it a 1.
Ed.: And again followed by "Natural One" (9 in my book) which underscores what you said.
p.s. not antichrist or anything, just think Christian rock is eternally lame

I never thought of this band as Christian Rock. In fact, some of their songs seem anti-religion.
Good band, good song.

hahaha.. the album is called "coil"..  anyone know what a "coiler" is?  a very long continuous piece of feces that wraps around the toilet bowl..  or "coils"...  very fitting title i think. {#Think}

I do enjoy a good poop joke, but I think this song is pretty good.
97?  Is that before or after Live cause i can hear a definite similarity in style.  It's pretty cool either way i suppose.

Oh and cause i scrolled down a bit Siandbeth seriously the doors? jefferson airplane?  You need to go ask Alice when she's 10ft tall.

Blah. Sounds over-produced and cookie-cutter-ish. Sounds like 90% of the copycat Christian Alternative I've heard - especially the chorus. Especially, especially when followed by Folk Implosion's "Natural One".

I agree... great band that has put out some really fantastic music over the years. Thanks to RP I've been exposed to much more of their music other than what's been (over)played on "regular" radio.
I think they are really underrated.
Coming after some genuine music, stuff like this just seems more hollow and artifical. This stuff is like music.
TOAD!!!!
booo. matchbox 3 doors pipe garbage. no thanks.
Sounds Goo Goo Dolls/Matchbox 20-ish

Can someone please explain the name, Toad the Wet Sprocket? Really--please. I'm not critical just confounded.
It's based on a Monty Python piece called "Rock Notes", which mentions a band by the same name. The actual "Toad" kinda-sorta "borrowed" it.
love the Toad!

Hadn't heard this one before...thanks RP!! Instantly likeable, good enough to make me search out the CD. I caught Glenn Phillips live/unplugged a couple years ago, he's a talented writer to be sure.
Love, love, love Toad. Agree whole-heartedly with saturnine
Kick ass song. I remember this song helping me out when I was going through the same feelings being expressed at a time in my life.
There are some Toad songs I love this much, but none that I love more. Lyrically, musically, this song gets to me from the opening chords, and IMHO, it has not only stood the test of time, but it keeps getting better. And if you've ever been there, you've got to admire how concisely this song captures emotional paralysis - "All I need's a starting place And nothing's ever seemed so hard"

I think a lot of people felt that way.
I never really knew anything about this band, but then I found their cd, "Dulcinea", from a flea-market.. that was a long time ago.. and it blew my mind! It's very low-profile, down-to-earth, quiet music but it somehow moves me very strongly. Love their vocals and guitarwork. I recommend that album! This was a good song, as well.
Not too familiar with Toad but this seems a little different from what I've heard before... but I really like it. Nice guitars, nice vocals and a good hook.
