Who draws the crowd, who plays so loud, baby, it's the guitar man
Who's gonna steal the show, you know, baby, it's the guitar man
He can make you love, he can make you cry
He will bring you down, he will get you high
And something keeps him going miles and miles away
To find another place to play

Night after night, who treats you right, baby, it's the guitar man
Who's on the radio, you know, baby, it's the guitar man
When he comes to town and you see his face
And you think you might like to take his place
Something keeps him drifting miles and miles away
Searching for the songs to play

Then you listen to the music and you'd like to sing along
And you want to get the meaning out of each and every song
And you find yourself a message and some words to call your own and take 'em home

He can make you love, he can get you high
He will bring you down, then he'll make, make you cry
Something keeps him moving, but no one seems to know
What it is that makes him go

Then the lights begin to flicker and the sound is getting dim
The voice begins to falter and the crowds are getting thin
But he never seems to notice, he's just got to find another place to play

Fade away (Ah, ah)
Got to play (Ah, ah)
Fade away (Ah, ah)
Got to play (Ah, ah)
(Ah, ah)
(Ah, ah)
(Ah, ah)
(Ah, ah)

Agree, it's just an annoying song no matter who does it

Yeah, but artists do a lot of stuff nobody 'needs'. Different strokes.
I kind of like this. Bread's original is pretty schmaltzy.

True
This song didn't need to be redone.
this defines monotone
What happened to the original? This is dreadful!
Best version of that song ever
this is what PSD button in for...next please, PLEASE!
I have a hard time not loving a Cake cover.  I know that puts me in a minority.  I just love the way he stays just a smidge behind the beat... and this song needed an update.
Holy crap, i hated this song in originally,,,,,man hearing Cake do this grinds the crap out of me. I hate CAKE a lot
I'm pretty sure I've never heard this version before. I don't think I've heard the original in decades. Wow.

Hmmm. Yeah, switching to "newest" order shows me that there have been no comments in that interval.  Makes sense.  And I know I haven't heard it. Not surprised to see that I gave it a six eleven years ago - I usually don't take the time to rate anything below a seven.  Hearing it now, in glorious FLAC streaming makes we think of re-evaluating my rating. ....... Okay, I evaluated it - my original comment stands!  Six it is!

Funny!  Although I did up my 7 to an 8....I like CAKE a lot so that helps...Long Live RP!!

Based on the song comments dates it looks like this song was off the playlist for 11 years.  Personally I'm OK if I hear it again in 2029.

Well, I like

restrained production values
vocal styling
70's-80's pop
sincere covers
Cake

So I'm grateful to hear this, especially since it's not very popular. Thanks for keeping it eclectic. There's an interesting covers-only stream here, if so inclined: http://somafm.com/covers
Why?
Not Cake's best effort...I'd also rather hear the "good" cuts off their albums. I disagree that Cake is sliding downhill. Still good.

No, but you get promoted to 6th grade.
I LOVE CAKE, why'd I give this a "6"?!?  (fixed the emojis 12/24/18 - looks like using the emoji names bracketed in colons no longer works in the new Beta version)
Let them eat bread
First time in the history of RP where I wanted to change the channel. I have no other channel. Rated barfo.
Ummm.... No.

I just find it hard to believe that this was even done ORIGINALLY!!!

Where is the emoticon that says, "You people actually think this is good?" I think it should be that little yellow face scratching his head repeatedly, eyes squinting, head cocked slightly to the left. The original is not one of the world's greatest songs, but there's at least a focus on the guitar playing, for god's sake. Regardless, this sucks the Pope's balls. One

Why did Cake feel the need to cover this particular song? The original sucked, and this blows.
I don't know. Maybe it's their "kitsch" or whatever. Either way, I am not hip enough to get it I guess.
Yeah, this one is kindof lame as far as Cake goes. Just saw them last week in LA at the Universal Ampitheater, and I had the same experience I usually have when I pop in one of their CD's: I love their good ones, they really jam on some songs, but then their sound gets a little tiresome. Still a cool band with a cool sound... -B

4.6? Geez, that's a bit harsh. I think it's pretty good.

Downright painful to listen to...
I expect Shatner to break in any second.
not the typical Cake song, huh... i'll have to hear this one a few times, methinks...
Ewwwww ... bad enough the first time around and the Bread/Cake pun isn't reason enough to resurrect it!
been really disappointed with the last 2 cake albums. anyone else notice them slipping? lyrics aren't as witty, more forced? rad baselines gone... what happened?!?
