doesn't compare to nico's version
Have you guys heard Nico's version? is much better! Oscar
Lame. So lame. Natalie Merchant does better with her own material, but to try to take on Jackson Browne's stuff is pure musical suicide. Gregg Allman's rendition was achingly-poignant. Very few people can do covers of JB's stuff effectively (well, okay - maybe the Eagles.) Not liking this version at all.
Jackson Browne is turning in his grave and he's not even dead yet.. This is dreadful, just awful.. sucko-barfo..

I'd be curious to hear Heather Nova's take on this classic. She did such a great job on "Gloomy Sunday." Hey, I know! Let's play "Gloomy Sunday" right now, instead of this!
That joke never gets old! No, wait, yes it does. In fact, it's on life support, buzzards are circling it, and Anna Nicole Smith is trying to marry it.
Good Cover!
...and now Natalie! 9.

anyone heard tom rush's version? kind of a leonard cohen edge to it (classic tom)
Yes, good job on this song and an excellent album. Would like to hear some Tom Rush on RP.

This song, done by Jackson Browne, used to get me through some blue moments; made me contemplative; still does. This is not a bad cover, but prefer JB. Is that on RP playlist? EDIT: I checked, and it is; but I have not heard it.

For my money, Pantera's version tops them all....

I'd only heard Jackson Browne's version of this one, and although this one is OK, I like Jackson's better. (Never have heard the Gregg Allman version, and would have never knows that he and JB were roomies early on.)
I like Nico's cover best, but I have yet to hear Natalie Merchant's version.
i was curious if Nico came before Natalie Merchant on this one. Interestingly, the cd listed above (In My Tribe - 10,000 Maniacs) shows a release date identical to Nico - Chelsea Girl (October 25, 1990). Weird.
Katie and Spliff, you KNOW some stuff. Thanks for the info! Guess in 1973, I was so busy DROOLING over Jackson, that I hadn't noticed Gregg's solo album cover of this song, though I like Gregg, too.

Covered These Days on first solo album. JB & Gregg were roomates in LA in the early days.

Gregg Allman does the version most people have heard...

Jackson would be justified in smacking Natalie around for this.
