One-eyed man with a scar on his face and a peg leg
Drives his cab fifty miles-per-hour down Broadway
Looks at me with his crooked smile while Gershwin plays
Hits his brakes and points out the freaks on St. Marks Place

It's the rhythm of the rain that falls
It's a cab ride at 5:00 A.M.
Manhattan goddess with her Levis and curls
New York City - I'm coming home again

Sit and smile thinking about summer Sundays and the roller skates
Afro wigs and rainbow socks float past like a ballet
Peanut roasters popping up on every corner, can't you taste that taste
Makes me long for an early morning ride on a subway

It's the rhythm of the rain that falls
It's a cab ride at 5:00 A.M.
Manhattan goddess with her Levis and curls
New York City - I'm coming home again

You can steal a line or a phrase, the record company will cheer
Sign you up, make you an artist, make you a millionaire
Shake your hand, pat your ass, give you a big white smile
Say that they're your biggest fan, say they love your style

It's the rhythm of the rain that falls
It's a cab ride at 5:00 A.M.
Manhattan goddess with her Levis and curls
New York City - I'm coming home again

It's the rhythm of the rain that falls
It's a cab ride at 5:00 A.M.
Manhattan goddess with her Levis and curls
New York City - I'm coming home again

New York City I'm coming home again

HA!  I should warn you, though given when you posted this you probably already know this.  You can leave NYC, the big city.  But it never, ever, quite leaves you.  Especially after 32 years of living it.  And if it ain't clear from my pseudonym....that ain't such a bad thing is it?  Heh!

At the beginning, I kept waiting for "Really don't mind if you sit this one out.  My words but a whisper your deafness a shout."
YAY! My favorite hippie jam band! Thank you for finally playing MOE.!
Why does this song sound like it's tripping over itself?
Although I like the song, I'm not sure it captures New York City. The rhythm of the falling rain? I've been to New York, Bangkok, Reykjavik, Paris and elsewhere. Falling rain sounds the same in every city. A 5 a.m. cab ride? I could take a 5 a.m. cab ride in Cleveland. Manhattan goddess with your Levi's and curls? The women I've known in Manhattan wouldn't go near a pair of Levi's!

New York City is special because of its manic, neurotic grandeur. Although the composer was trying to portray an intimate relationship, I think the lyrics are just too generic to accurately reflect a love affair with a city that is unlike anyplace else.

My two cents.

Moe - New York City
Ryan Adams - New York, New York

Go for Nina Hagen next.

Whats not to like??  Can't keep still

Upbeat vibe reminds me of Dean Friedman. Anybody? Ariel? NYC song from the 70's?

It has more of a Gaelic sound to me, but I do remember Dean Friedman and that song.

Oh,  I love that song!  "I said, 'HI!'  She said, 'Yeah, I guess I am.'"  I actually have that album. "We made love to bombs bursting in Airrrrrrr-iel..."   I hear some similarities here (I also, here, some similarities hear.) Thanks for the reminder.  I have GOT to get my turntable hooked up - so much great music (Kevin Ayers' "Yes, We Have No Mañanas
springs to mind.)  {#Cheers}

Loves me some Moe.  Excellent live show-if you have the opportunity to go, you should!

Ooooh - been a LONG time since I've heard Johnny Clegg - "Scatterlings" has always been one of my favorite songs by him, although I also really love "Asimbonanga" and "Take My Heart Away" (the latter is what compelled me to purchase the "Shadow Man" cassette, and I haven't gotten it on CD yet! Dang me....)

And, now that we're on the subject, why do we NOT have any Johnny Clegg and Savuka playing? "Scatterlings" is on the playlist, but there are so many other wonderful songs by him. If I had the CD, I'd convert to MP3 and upload a few things...

Um, sorry, ick - I sorta bogarted your post... *blushing*

Ditto on the JC and Savuka.  Let's get some of that going!

One of the better live acts. Attend and learn.
I don't care if it captures NYC or not - it captures a happy groove for me, and I really like it. Even now, when it's dark and winter is looming on the horizon. Yeah, bring it on, winter - I gots me some Moe. {#Dancingbanana}{#Music}
Not my favorite music!
I so much want to like this, but I have to say it captures NYC less than any other NYC song Bill plays.

I have always like this little ditty, just a fun uplifting tune!

That intro had me believing that we were gonna get some Johnny Clegg and Savuka.
These guys are AMAZING live. Not quite as amazing on their albums...
I do not want them anywhere near NYC.

"It's a cab ride at 5am" - lucky Noo Yorkers. AT 5am in London you'd have more chance of finding a camel ride than a cab ride. As for Nottingham - forget it!

What about calling one? :D

Never listened to these guys, even though I was a big fan of some of the 90s jam band scene. The guitar in this is pretty cool though.

Holy wow, they ROCK.
Check 'em out live sometime (try to ignore the over-medicated 20-somethings...)

This is the only song I can recall from Moe. Makes me want to see them in a small club.

I'm hearing Eddie Rabbit...{#Cheesygrin}

moe channels Bruce Hornsby.
I'm hearing this too, but I assumed it was an african guitarist of some stripe... all but the guitar part is relatively average, but the guitar method shimmers.

Kinda what I thought. Not that I dislike this song, it's just the bumper stickers were obscure enough to make me think it would be a bit less, I dunno, pop-ish?
This song does not sound like it was written by anyone who has ever been in NYC for more than a couple of days.
simply can't play enough moe!
This is a great live band--i've seen some epic sets from years past. Reminds me of college.
boring, a once good band has gone down the tubes big time ...

I kinda like it. Cool ode to one of my favorite cities (I won't call it the "greatest city in the world", it's been said too many times about the Apple...)
moe!!!!! Play more.
yay I

moe of the same ol same ol, as always with these guys...they have a good song or two, but this isn't one of them, in my opinion.
MOE!!!!!! (er moe.)
fun to see them live.
sounds like 99% of the other jam band crapola. . .

longer than you've been around here, evidently. carbon leaf and moe both came out of the early 90's college scene. no point arguing which has the longer pedigree.
Crap.

Just don't like that his voice sounds so much like Hootie... but a 7 otherwise.
A guy from NY says... Eh.

Hells yeah MOe. DERHACK FOR PRESIDENT!!
It figures, the one time I see that Moe was played on RP and I had to step away from the desk.
Fantastic to hear moe. on RP, a band that definately doesn't get enough radio play. Thanks!
whoah, i was literally just thinking "why not more moe. here on RP?"
For about thirty seconds of distracted listening, I thought this was Van Morrison.
"..it's a cab ride at 5 AM..." That's pretty much my NYC experiences..
this just sounds same-y to me
"Hey, MOE!!!" A 6.
