Chet had a tone like no one else.  Instantly recognizable.
Chet and Paul Desmond.  Pure bliss.
"If you have to ask, you'll never know" seems like a silly thing to say. As well as supercilious. You'll never know if you don't ask.
and Dizzy said about jazz: if you have to ask, you'll never know.

A genius. Could listen to him play anything.
Outstanding...love Chet's work. {#Good-vibes}

Chet Baker. Sweet. Love his voice too.

I've been pressing the alarm button for ages now but I'm still stuck in this damn elevator.

Oh hang on - this isn't twitter....sorry.

I just love Panera Bread...LOL!  :-)

Funny you should mention that. I was about to say that I am ashamed to admit the only version of this with which I was previously familiar was by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass.

Funniest heresy I've heard all week!

Right up there with other grand heresies, e.g., the Earth is round, the Sun is at the center of our solar system, etc.

Perfect to wash-away the horrible Carla aftertaste.
Now we need some Herb Alpert (or at least those great album covers).  God bless my parents for liking him when I was 11-14 years old.
7??

ahhh me hear some good tunes fo sho, fo reelz!
perfection
This just cheers me right up! (especially after having to endure that Bruni chick).
A 10 for Chet and an 11 for Bill. ¡¡Muchos zankius!!
Mo jazz por favor.
This is nice ... very nice.
Wonderful...I enjoyed it thoroughly. However, I cannot resist saying that it really made me want to go out to the lobby for some popcorn.
Brightens up a gray day in the city...sweet!

True, but the truly choice compositions also serve, like any great music, to ignite the listener's emotions and imagination. Academic playing without that associative component may be interesting, but remains clinical.
If the audience doesn't like it, then we're not intelligent enough. I'm not a fan of this music style.
Intellect may help you recognize the intricacy of each measure, but outstanding pieces such as this transcend merely what the head understands.
Dig it man, I'm hip to that jive... By the way, I think that is "Mulva"

Chet Baker on RP! BillG knows, the way to follow "Be Cool" is to play the Cool.
pretty damn good, thouigh maybe a bit simple and tuneful for jazz diehards. An 8 for sure.....well maybe a 7.

wtf? I gotta go for now, Saturday night needs to groove, but not with this SnoozeFest

Sadder, perhaps, was how he lived. Of all the "tragic wastes" in the history of modern music, the life of Chet Baker may well be the biggest such "waste" of them all.

I mean there is little practical difference between the two. I suppose one can argue that a piece of "music" with no melody or rhythm (leaving what exactly?) can be executed with great technical skill, but what would be the point of that? It would be like reelecting Bush because he implements brain-dead conservative policies that hurt America well--it doesn't matter if he does it well or not because we don't want it done.
Now now...you only dug this old comment up because you know I'm on here posting actively, too...come on, admit it ;-)

I'm sorry. There are some things in my life I just can't like no matter how much I try-and I do try. Liverwurst, politicians, and jazz. In no order, and to name a few. Someone on here in another thread said it's because young people need structure or something that they don't like jazz. I think it's simpler than that. My brain just says no thanks. On a related note, there are some forms of techno I simply cannot listen to because I am epileptic. The affect is much like an aural strobe light and can cause a seizure. Don't mind me, it's late and I'm rambling... :P

If I was listening to the dinner jazz channel, this would be a 10. But on RP, I think it ranks a 3.
Having Paul Desmond's silky tones in there is not hurting at all. At least I think it's him, based on the Amazon description.
Love the jazz thrown into the mix. Keep it up!

Please make this stop. . . I like jazz. . . but this is as close to utter bollocks as I have ever heard.
Nice cover.... can't quite put my finger on it... TobalMoreno, BKardon, and Kevstar, you are not alone in your insanity!

Good song. Really different from Led Zeppelin's "Tangerine".

Nice post intended as a witty response to try and make yourself look intelligent or funny, or special, whatever a attention starved simpleton as yourself would need. I never cease to be humoured by all those who simply dismiss any thing "older" than their time as bad music. If any of them knew what this music actually meant to anything they enjoy they would have a little more respect. I feel sad for the musically ignorant who berate what they don't understand.

I'm just not a jazz fan...RP is supposed to be eclectic R&R and while I can stand going out of the box, even enjoy hearing other genres on occasion, two jazz tunes in a row is too much.
sublime.......

Here's a suggestion: Evaluate music on its merits. If Macy's thinks Chet Baker fits in with ladies' apparel, more power to them. Turning up your nose at good music just because it makes you think of a department store is music snobbery and it's dumb. More ranting on this topic
my mind is in the gutter, and this cover art is there with it...
Hearing this song, I can't help but be reminded of this commercial jingle from my youth: "Figurineeeeeeeeeenes. Crunch crunch crunch crunch crunch." That damned commercial has ruined this song for me for all time.

Great tune. I love this kind of Jazz. A quartet I believe. In Denver we have this great little jazz club/dive called El Chapoltepec. The room is small and cramped, dark and the smoke so thick you may need a lung transplant when your done, but wow man the jazz is awesome.

I assume that was last week, and you were playing what instrument? Excellent tune from Mr. Baker.
physicsgenius wrote:

So by melodious, do you mean said band practices had more of a distinguishable, hummable melody? Or do you mean that the bands played better or with more skill? Whichever your intent, none really holds water, rationally. The molody is as distinct as it need be for a Jazz piece. If said junior band played a "more melodious" piece, it was undoubtably a different piece. If the band played with more skill, well that doesn't really make a serious commentary on Chet's playing or his band's, as this is one piece in an immense catalogue. Most likely, any junior band you hear was playing more malodiously. This gets a slammin' 9.
worst Zeppelin cover EVER!!!!!!!!! just kidding.
I suppose this is "light" jazz because I like it! Very listenable...no dissonance, or crazy solos that distance me from "real" jazz. Previous posts that "dis" this are probably way more "jazz savvy" than me....
Chet was a very good horn player, but a sad manipulative man. Thankfully we can all remember the music, and forget the rest. P.S. - This album is one of his weakest. For a real dose of Baker, give a listen to Chet and Chet In New York. Those are great albums.
