RP introduced me to him. Now, I have 7 of his tunes on  "My Favorites" list. That is why we come here.  Thanx RP!
EXCELLENT!! I never heard of him prior to RP. Now I like  him a lot. Thanx RP!
"Talking Timbuktu" one of my favorite Farka Touré albums, I love Ry Cooder in this collaboration too. ♥♥♥
Played this song sooooo many times. Especially on the road to somewhere. It has therefore collected so many personal memories. The song will be in my ❤ till my death. Absolutely love it.

I was going to mention The World on NPR too but others have beaten me to it. I guess this tells you a little something about the RadioParadise listening audience...we're probably not the same group who considers a monster truck show to be the ultimate art form. Oh, and I like the music too! :D

We aren't so darned special...

IMO Ry Cooder should be declared a "World Treasure."  Why?  Because, although one may like his playing yes or no, he does manage to pull off some amazing musical hookups that really bring obscure but top-flight musicians into the limelight.  This is a fabulous collaboration, as is "A Meeting By the River (thx RP)" with Vishwan Bhatt, and the exemplary "Buena Vista Social Club.  Personally, I dig Ry's playing, and he hangs out with some awesome other muscians!

this is the kind of album you put on in the background when friends are over for dinner... 3 out of any 10 people will ask who it is and want to run out and get themselves a copy (it would be 8 out of 10 for the RP crowd - i'm sure Stingray and Papernapkin could find a way to hate it).

Completely agree. Well said.

That is very informative.  I'm a huge public radio listener and I often wondered about the differences.  Thanks for the info!

I knew that this is the intro music for The World.  I was scrolling down to see if anyone else noticed it.

More truth than fiction, you're getting close...

Drive through daiquiri joints place a piece of transparent tape over the X shaped hole in the lid of a styrofoam cup, so it's not (technically) an open container. Well behaved consumption on this stretch of brackish water is not enforced, but 6mph over the speed limit will likely result in an overly dramatic takedown by a special force in vehicles dedicated to patrolling this bridge.

I love you, RP! Unfortunately I can not support you financially, but I am spreading the news about you in every way I can :)
On today's Geo Quiz, we're looking for the name of a small town nestled in the foothills of Northern California's Sierra Nevada Mountains...

I'm laughing at myself because when I heard this come on, I was expecting a Geo Quiz from PRI's The World ( https://www.theworld.org/geo-quiz/ ).  Geo Quiz uses this as a "theme music".  Good song either way.  Thanks, RP, for showing me the rest of the song!

Excellent. My brother gave me an Ali Farka Tour album for Christmas a couple years ago. I had never heard of the band, but it was so different and refreshing. Love it!

does NPR use this as an intro to one of their programs?

It appears Ry Cooder can do nothing wrong. This is yet another great track. And as usual, he knows how to keep his head down and not take over the stage nor the praise from the other musicians.
Interesting blend. Works well for me.
Something elemental, dark, primitive about this ... I likey

Likeable enough, just not that moving. After a while it just seems to drone....
first heard Ali on a Global Gumbo compilation for which i have many great finds to thank... and a big thanks to you BillG for being the bester than bestest
yeah this is great . and also part of a great set of eclectic music playing today. ... went out and got the CD shortly after it came out . beautiful .
I didn't give it a "10" this time, but MY GOD! This is is primitive, modern, rockin, cool, way out, classic and a million shades of everything good in music. I can almost decipher the words by the use of the voice. Simply incredible. Oh, Ry, you rock, always did, always will
