I was 11yrs old when this came out & I bought the 45. WMCA 570AM NYC (The Good Guys), played this tune a lot.

At college in '67, one of my flatmates used to play The Seeds very loudly from behind his locked bedroom door. When we complained, he used to shout, "You have to listen to crap stuff as well, 'cos it makes you appreciate the good stuff even more!"

I believe "Freak Out" (Zappa's first recording) and this tune were both released in 1966.

My reaction upon hearing this is it sounds like Mothers of Invention from their first album, which was probably about the same time in pre-history. I see that others hear the connection, but for me it dates to his earliest recordings.

Love the 13th Floor Elevators. Little Steven turned me onto them recently, although that song was used in a TV commercial a few years back, right?. Shame they were forgotten: maybe they were too garage-y or Roky's struggles were a turn-off for oldies stations. Their cover of Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" is quite good. 

"Pushin' Too Hard" got played all the time on late-night radio when I was growing up.  Did the Seeds do anything else of note?

Loved this tune back in the day, and still do.  I think the leader of the band "went off the deep end."  Perhaps too much of the lysergic compound.

Thanks for playing this, Bill. When consider the date of this release, one quickly realizes its historical importance in the realm of psychedelic rock. This came out at the dawning thereof and was quite a departure on AM radio from the likes of Pat Boone, et al.

It was actually bands like the Seeds or the Zachary Thaks, 13th Floor Elevators, Blue Magoos and of course the Kingsmen who are the real champions of rock'n'roll spirit. The headlines always go to the mid-to-late 70's punksters in GB and NY for busting up the megarock corporate logjam, but the guys who busted their humps recording little 7 inch singles that absolutely roared with energy were these many unsung rockin' heros from the sixties.

i saw that too! kate ballard was in that show also. i remember a horrible lip snyc and an equally horrible sit-com. i once heard an interview with mr. saxon wayyyyyyyyy back in the early days of kroq-fm, l.a. like around '73. they floated him in the booth on a string . he said he was farming in hawaii. one could only guess what he was growing. I'll never forget seeing these guys on a stupid television show called "The Mothers-In_Law" with Eve Arden. She was about 60 and wearing hippie clothes and beads and dancing like a tripped-out fool. I still have nightmares about it.

Zappa spoofed this music, but this was the real thing! No talent, monotenous grind that got re-hashed by the group half a dozen times in an effort to repeat their first hit. Happens that I saw these guys a few nights ago in London. Sky Saxon hung out with us near the stage while Love was playing. He's so burned out it was better than a trip to the British Museum! Gotta say...I LIKE this song, truly the Garage Band anthem.
