I'm gonna make you proud...
proud enough to never have to lie
And if I make you smile
could you leave just a trace of sadness in your eyes

No need to think it over
A night like this wasn't born to last too long
You get one shot at love and then it's gone,
One shot at love and then it's gone

I'm gonna make you sing
'till the words will shoot
like lightning from your dreams
Well you and I both know
that easy street ain't never what it seems
Now put away your compass
You're right where you belong
You get one shot at love and then it's gone,
One shot at love and then it's gone

I'm gonna make you fly...
transcendent as the dawn above the mist
We were born into the sky
innocent as the day that heaven kissed
Don't take all this for granted
we're as weak as we are strong
You get one shot at love and then it's gone,
One shot at love and then it's gone

One shot at love and then it's gone
One shot at love and then it's gone

I didn't know Bill played Peter Himmelman, but thank you.  I see by the dates of posts that it may be infrequently, but at least he's part of the RP universe...
I'm a big fan going back to the 'Strength To Strength' album and can recommend mining Himmelman's prolific catalog for some real gems that never broke out with FM radio.
Forgot to mention he is the best in concert,  as his bio mentions, you never know what he's going to do...  I've seen upwards of 40-50 shows over the years and all were unique and wonderful.

Or worse, Leonard Cohen.

A wonderful, amazing artist.  He is utterly hilarious in concert, which was an unexpected bonus.
"Flown this acid world" was my first introduction to him. Great album, highly recommend…

I was thinking Greg Brown's little brother...
Too bad there isn't more Himmelman played on RP. His songs blend in well. His latest is well worth the cost, great stuff. He's an amazing musician and I'm glad to say I have seen him live several times.

Yo, dolfan, I have to disagree with you. This is an excellent song b/c it is written about a specific moment and feeling that is pure and true -- at that moment. It's hard to think of any decent and moving song that is also true all of the time. Think about it: "We are the Champions." Temporary. "Rock You Like a Hurricane". True, it's not a decent song, but it's also complete hyperbole, unless sung by a severe tropical storm. I think ole' Peter is singing about an emotion here, not giving advice. You get the idea. Anyway, I've seen him three or four times and I can honestly say that each show was totally spontaneous and unique -- more so than any other artist I've seen multiple times. I recommend checking him out. Cheers, Frank

Did that have anything to do with the breakup? Sorry, but just went back and found this, and couldn't let it pass...

You're famous. Bill quoted you on the air. You get one shot at fame, and then it's gone!

Sheesh...I sure hope you're right!!
Man, some chick done him wrong, and how! Could that guy be more depressed?

Don't worry. You'll get another shot. One good turn deserves another.
maybe you do, but it's easy to end up with an empty magazine. :(
Being a homegrown Minnesotan and seeing him a long, long time ago it's easy to appreciate what a great and underappreciated songwriter he is...Long live Duluth!!!

Had no idea. Thanks for the background mc. With all that detail I can't help but wonder whether you guys were sorta related somehow!

This song grows on me.

Ummm... you guys are aware that Peter Himmelman is Bob Dylan's son-in-law? I'm not a huge fan of the sensitive singer-songwriter types, but when i was married my ex LOVED this guy. I've seen him live with his band and several times solo, and it's about the best performance you'll see all year if you can catch him. Deep, intense, introspective songs of relationships gone wrong, etc... and between songs, the funniest, most sarcastic & sardonic chat you've ever heard. it's hilarious to see all these women crying during his songs, and then breaking up in between. I've seen him pull guys from the audience and make 'em do "interpretive dance", and even take cell phones from the crowd and try to call "bob". (His Dylan imitation is pretty good, too).
This sounds like Dylan meets Randy Newman, vocally.
It's tough to make the Dylan sound work, even for Dylan, but when it works it's far out. This is far out!
