Purple haze all in my brain
Lately things don't seem the same
Acting funny but I don't know why
'Scuse me while I kiss the sky

Purple haze all around
Don't know if I'm climbin' up or down
Am I happy or in misery?
Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me

Help me... Help me...

Purple haze all in my eyes
Don't know if it's day or night
You got me blown, blown my mind
Is it tomorrow or the end of time?

Help me... Help me...

This is a real feat... melding talents of two great artists and celebrating them both...

Yes. The Cure certainly reinvented the song.  Good job.

Yeah. I really love this version.

No.
I remember buying this album when it came out, listening once and thinking "Well, that was a waste of time and money". My opinion hasn't changed.
thumbs up

Hah!
I appreciate that they were trying to do something different with the song, but it felt pretty dull and lifeless to me.

It's a cover -- my ears song.

This may be sacrilege, but think I prefer the Cure's version to the original.
This is how thou cover a song, you make it your own.

not even close to Hendrix, but thanks for filling my mind with this album, went right to the youtube site to explore

RP is awesome.
I love The Cure, but Robert's vocals just are not right for this.  The band is great as always, but Robert should have sat this one out.
WTF? {#Stupid}
I just aint feelin it. {#No}

Nice little diddy.

I like it just fine.    {#Clap}
This cover makes me appreciate the original even more, so it's not all bad.

Yea, I have had if forever.  Can't tell you how many computers/mp3 players it has been on.  Most it pretty good only a couple of duds.  I think Jimi would approve.

More cow bell !   {#Lol}
holy smokes, that's good!
Very brave effort by The Cure here, and whaddya know - they pulled it off!  Very nice.
See on hea plaat.

I'm a diehard Hendrix fan from the late 60s and also a huge Cure fan. Amazing that they can take such an iconic song and make it their own.
A decent cover so I gave it a 5.
Great version, never heard it before.
Loved early Cure, and never really gave the more recent stuff a try.
Maybe I need to go check some out after all!

Chris
Had not heard this until today....was playing in the background and really grabbed my attention.  Looking forward to hearing it again.

Fascinating cover of an iconic song!

First time I've heard this...

I confess - I've never heard this but, well, like it quite a bit.

Always interested in other artists' take on another's work.
Bill - Excellent programming my friend.

Jimi Hendrix - Fire followed by The Cure - Purple Haze

I'm at work and I did a little LOL (but not too loud) when Purple Haze came on.

A co-worker heard me laugh and popped his head in the door and asked what the joke / funny was?

I clicked the Playlist button and swiveled the monitor so he could see the screen.

He (musically clueless - listener of AM talk - maybe some pop FM once in a while) looked at the screen and said, "I don't get it."

LOL
the Cure are still one of my all time fave bands, and I was around when Jimi Hendrix was releasing album and still own them! I bought this Stone Free CD of covers when it first came out and always thought Robert at company did a bang up job, one of the best covers on the album.

very interesting comments.  Most of the Hendrix fans like this cover while most of what seem to be die-hard Cure fans don't.  To me, I always had a respect for the Cure, but this rendition (it's a rendition, people, not a cover) raised my respect for them about 10-fold.  Can you imagine being asked to do Purple Haze?  What are you going to do?  I say take it apart and put it back together - almost (but not really) a different song.  It's got the same soul, the same spell, but technically (musically) new.  Job well-done.  I know it's not the Cure's usual but I always thought they were kind of stuck in a schtick.

LOVE IT!
terrible!
This is fun.  I expected the 'double hump' distribution on the ratings, though.  I give it a solid seven. When I first heard it, I wondered if it was SUPERHEAVY.

I like this cover.  Jimi's guitar was everything on this one and the Cure kind of shrugged it off as an afterthought and played it their way.  The entire tribute album is worth a listen in my view.  Paul Rodgers & Slash have a nice number.  No disrespect to the originals.  Nothing like them before or since, but great stuff should be covered in my opinion.

I think even Jimi would have blessed this rendition, excuse me..   it is quite good
The groove is definitely there, and it's a different take instead of just a mimic,

But Robert Smith's vocals just ruin it for me.

Agree with both your first two statements and while I wouldn't say "despise," I'm not really loving this.

This great!  Can't you feel the groove?!
Butchers!
All Along the Watchtower from Hendrix next?

Blasphemy or not, this is well-done IMHO.
I really like The Cure...but not this cover.
wow. neat
The whole album is pretty cool.  Jimi would have been proud.
I had to log on to see who was 'lifting' the Hendrix rift.

I shouldnt like this, but I really do.  Call it a guilty pleasure.

BLASPHEMY!!!  My Heart hurts{#Razz}
This is excellent. A really good cover. 9.
...and a 'real' song afterwards. Thanks for this 'Cure'!
Guitar sound like Godzilla

You realize this has been out since 1993? What a shame it took so long for you to hear it. I guess I'm old. The Cure was a favorite band of mine  and when I heard this cover....I used to request DJ's at clubs to play it (only the cool non generic ones had it though)
I listened to a 30sec sample on Amazon, and it was only instrumental.  Is the entire song without vocals?
I don't understand covers that are basic replays of the original (as are most of the selections on this tribute album). I have to give this one points just because it takes an entire different slant on the original, and it's quite good in my book.
like the cure, like hendrix, like this. so many bands that do covers try to sound just like the original, which to me often seems a bit silly because we already have that version. some covers work and some don't but i've noticed that when someone tries to cover a really good original from a really respected artist, a lot people out here get their panties in a bunch with talk of blasphemy.

I give it a 5 because it's just a filler Cure song. But I'm tempted to give it a 10 just to tweak you people who are defending Jimi (like he needs your help).

Same here. Kudos for not making a karaoke remake, but I don't like it regardless.
just because you can, should you? reinterpretation in fine, but the intent is just lost in this mess!
I still like it after all these years, like someone said before, hazy, distant, not trying to improve Hendrix at all, just being distant and making it your own ScottN wrote:

...didn't think I would like it...but I kinda' do!...sounds like the Cure paying homage to a great tune in thier own unique style...that can't be all bad can it?... S.

Making Purple Haze boring is quite the achievement, but one along the lines of getting caught picking your nose in church, rather than climbing Mount Everest naked. Or something.
love Hendrix... big fan of The Cure... despise this cover.
I gave it a 4 because it was funny, but really, it's quite boring.

If you think about it, this version is true to the spirit of the title, very purple, very hazy, all chaps and amyl nitrate. Not bad if you don't listen to it directly.
Never thought of it that way. How many songs can be improved that way? Next time the Cure's rape of "Purple Haze" comes on RP, just avert your ears and everything will be fine.

Just needed to bring this sentiment back to the forefront of the forum. Great Interpretation. Listen for the Star Trek doors opening and closing in time. Lighten up and embrace diversity........Cheers!

Wow...isn't it funny how I come back again and again to say bad things about the same song, forgetting that I've already done so. Must be the dementia setting in...
I actually like this. Call it..."Disentegrating baseline with Jime Hendrix in the Forest"
has anyone heard david byrnes cover of one rainy wish. one of my hendrix favorites, and a really nice job by old dave.
scuse me, while i eat these fries
This song is an abomination to the original. Hopefully Jimi is still so f'd up on drugs that he can't hear this from his grave. Ive never cared for the cure. This song definitly reinforces that.
a tad repetitive, yet a commendable cover. the cure makes this song their own
I remember this being the worst track on that album. Seal did a nice job on Crosstown Traffic.
:headache.gif:
I've always thought Hendrix was overrated, and I've never cared for The Cure. Oddly enough, I really liked this one.
This was a bad idea for a cover. Textbook case. Artistic hubris run amok all over a revered monument, sorta like Christo wrapping Mount Rushmore, or Peter Max getting all Day-Glo over Michelangelo's Pieta. Or... Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice making a musical out of On the Road? Toby Keith singing Woody Guthrie? Kenny G. duetting with Louis Armstrong? (Oh yeah, I forgot he actually attempted that grisly travesty via overdubbing.) Yessir buddy, tackling Jimi Hendrix was a bad idea, all right. Shame on you Robert Smith.

normally I like the cure, but not that song... <-(
This song is a good test for mental flexibility. I love it.
shoot me now, please someone. actually shoot whoever thought this was a good way to cover jimi. a discrace, and I like the cure, suckobarfo here though :(

I'm a little surprised this is The Cure doing a cover...my first thought was, "What is this, RP is playing a mashup??" Love Jimi, like The Cure, might even dance to this in a club, but I wouldn't put this in my personal listening rotation.
This sounds like a psychedelic purple haze-which is the way it should sound.
I bought this album when it first came out and I have to say that it's the worst collection of 'tribute' songs I've ever heard. It's a miracle that I never pawned the thing off. PM Dawn's on it for fuck sake. PM DAWN!!!!
I think I can understand how people can not like this. I don't, however, agree... I wonder if liking this cover hinges on digging that deep, relentless bassline?
It even sounds like Robert Smith sings 'scuse me while I kiss this guy too...
I'm all for the Cure, but .......... NO!
this is poo poo. like jimmy's version much better.
The Cure makes me happy...

i love the cure. i don't know if the jimi cover is though my first choice to play. i rather have a something from disinagration or pornography.

I actually feel the exact opposite. I love The Cure and I like Hendrix, but this does nothing for me. This adds nothing to the original and it does not reflect what a true Cure song usually is
Decent. I rather like the cover of "Are You Experienced" by Belly on this album.
I am so surprised that this song has been rated all together a simple 6. The Cure, Hendrix. and an incredible cover...Most creative cover Of a Hendrix song but still somehow in a Hendrix kind of way...
This is just ALLLLL kinds of wrong.

Pretty cool, really. Better than any original Cure songs I've heard.
WOW. I just looked up and saw the most awesome sunset! It has been raining/snowing all day and we haven't seen the sun in days here, but all of a sudden, right at sunset, the sun set in the small sliver of sky beneath the clouds and above the horizon, and the sun turned the sky BLOOD RED! I have never seen anything like it. THis is not a purple haze, but is equally bizarre!!
Not the right kind of haze. Maybe not purple enough?
