If you want me to stay,
I'll be around today,
to be available for you to see.
But I am about to go,
And then you'll know,
For me to stay here I got to be me.

You'll never be in doubt,
That's what it's all about,
You can't take me for granted and smile.
Count the days I'm gone
Forget reachin' me by phone
Because I promise I'll be gone for a while.

And when you see me again,
I hope that you have been,
The kind of person....that you really are now.
Got to get in straight,
How could I ever be late,
When you're my woman taking up my time.

Whoa, oh how could I ever allow,
I guess I wonder how,
I could get out a pocket for fun. HOW HOW!!
When you know that you're never number two,
Number one's gonna be number one,
ohh oww oohh

I'll be good,
I wish I could
I get this message over to you now.
ahhh, yeah, message, mmmm
When you see me again,
I hope that you have been,
The kind of person you really are now.
I'll be so good, oh
I wish I could,
I get this message over to you now.

ahhh, yeah.....

Wow. I am realizing right now this is not a RHCP song

That RUDE vocal is a big big hint, not to mention the brass and funkeeee keys
Wow. I am realizing right now this is not a RHCP song
A classic, certainly one of the most soulful songs from '73, and a great one from Mr. Stewart.  Too bad that soon after this things came to a grinding halt, creatively. Oh well... Greatness rarely lasts forever.

Wow
I love this version of this song. Different than the one I'm familiar with. Nice and simple: bass, voice, piano...
Before there was Prince or George Clinton, there was Sly. Surprises me how frequently his stuff comes back to me. . .
Funk personified. Genius of funk. Might've influenced one or two latter day artists.
Big driving bass line with light horn and keyboard color. Excellent!
I think I need to hear more of these guys..

Bingo!
OMG I haven't heard this in 30 years or so! Still sounds great after all these years.
Great tune. I think this is in a Tim Hutton movie, Made in Heaven. I can see him literally screaming this in a convertible.
I'll probably get some hell for this, but I really like the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ version of this. It doesn’ take away from my love of Sly, and I love this original version as well. But Chili Peppers did a damn fine job of it. If you haven’t heard it, you should.
Mmmmmmmmm. Sssssssllllyyyyyyyyyyyyy
My all time favorite funky-song...Smoooooooth.
We want the funk!
