Woah... my ears are bleeding and my dog is howling This sucks!
In this case, Huey Lewis says it best... "sometimes, bad is just BAD!"
Pain!!! Now I lost my concentration (trying to study) :/

Not to worry - this has nothing to do with classical music, despite the fact that a string quartet is playing it ... it hurts my ears ...
As a novelty song, it ranks right up there with "Guitar-zan". But it's interesting to hear that the actual music of Purple Haze isn't all that interesting. It was all in Hendrix's performance.
OK, so I laughed at this. But my ears will still be much happier if they never have to hear it again!
Nice transition from Dave Matthews' "Too High" - too bad I'm not a big fan of either. (Funny how Hendrix can lose so much without that feedback edge.)
Very un-original. The Balanescu Quartet did a CD of Kraftwerk covers years ago (although I prefer Senor Coconut's Kraftwerk covers better).
This is CRAP!!!!! Remove NOW!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!! OMFG!!!!!!!! THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!! SUCH A BAD TRIP!!!!!!!
This is terrible... get it off the air!!!

Like Hendrix cover of Watchtower that I heard immediately after that? What a horrible idea...
This one clearly proves the exception to the rule. Even Dylan agreed that Hendrix's version is better.

Interesting, even (dare I say it) cute and amusing, and I applaud RP for playing it and Kronos for recording it. But did Hendrix EVER intend this sort of thing to happen? Is he writhing in his crypt?
No complaints here! Not only do covers like this always make me smile, but you can always count RP to follow up with the original artist doing an even better song.
I recall Bowie using this recording to open his Glass Spider tour. Peter Frampton off to the side in Jeans and a T-Shirt, and Bowie floating down on a chair from the top of the stage...
OK - I've been touting how great it is to have original versions of Jimi songs. This is no exception... but I gotta say - this one just doesn't do it for me. It's original and creative but.... Maybe just that I'm not a big classical fan? :-k

This doesn't work. How can you honestly be asking for funds to support this station when we frequently have to hit the mute button to turn off this drek?
I agree it does not work. But IMO a good radio has to surprise you from time to time. This was not a good one, but I really appreciate RP eclectic touch !
too messy please give us Steven Reich and Philip Glass
Come on. You can't expect any station's playlist to align 100% with your own tastes, especially when you're as narrow-minded as you appear to be. If this station's too eclectic for you, please see shoutcast.com for other options. There's always commercial radio, too, where you're pretty much guaranteed never to hear the Kronos Quartet, ever. ediTed wrote:

Song aside, a BRILLIANT segue from "Too High" from D. Matthews. Seamless flow. Bravo, Bill.
The challenge I think is in extracting the song from the original performance, and allowing it to be reinterpreted with an open mind. With some songs, like Purple Haze, they can be so closely associated with the original singer/songwriter that it can be difficult or impossible. But take the Dylan song tune that followed on his playlist "All Along the Watchtower", reinterpreted by none other than Jimi himself Maybe not an exact analogy, but they're only notes on paper in the end...
Oh, come on guys. You'd prefer Hayseed Dixie? Actually, in a similar vein, and much better to listen to, is the Balenescu Quartet's album of Kraftwerk tunes.
I'm with those who say it doesn't work (here). Jimi Hendrix' music doesn't need violins to be already classical enough in his own right and beside that, probably no other rendition could be as powerful and moving as his own. I could imagine a fine version of for instance Castles Made of Sand with violins though.
okay, you've played this more than enough to make your point...now put it back on the shelf for a few years.

Ok, but can they play it behind their heads?
Lord, that ain't right...please forgive 'em....be with the starvin' pygmies in New Guinea.
Kronos Quartet ..what an amazing rendering.. too good for some people's taste I know.. Amazing!
This is a blast! I bet Jimi would've loved it!
...talent to fart purple haze...
I bet Serge Gainsbourg could have done it.

ROFLMAO! This is pretty amazing actually. C'mon; classical musicians playing rock and roll. It's usually the other way around.

Sorry... I can appreciate the talent, but not the actual noise. Next, please!
I agree...it sounded cool until it got past the intro...then it became annoying. I guess talent is not the only pre-requisite. I mean it would take talent to fart purple haze too ...but that would be a little too eclectic
Marginally better than a version of this song performed by The Cure that I have on disc. Still - cool variation.
Simply brilliant. Some people are reacting as though this is some slaughtering of the original. But it is much more an homage to him. They are putting him with ranks of the other lauded classical composers that string quartets are supposed to play.
I'm sorry, I want to like this, but I just can't. It doesn't work.
Ummm.. okay.. :-&

Or with their teeth? These guys do great versions of everything from this to jazz standards like "Well You Needn't". It may seem excessively cute to some, but more genre-bending is always better in my book, as long as it doesn't involve Dolly Parton.
Saw them do this live on "Sessions at West 54th" (not the only RP artist I've seen there), and the violinist playing the vocals and solos had an electric violin. This version seems totally unplugged, but catches every tone--even the accidental fingerings that made Jimi's work so amazing--from the single.

yeah, it's like hearing your favorite rock anthem in a BMW commercial

Can't help it...I love it!

Kronos quartet!! a whole lot more interesting then 'FÃŒr Elise' from Beethoven i heard the other day on RP.
Man this thing had a buzz to it when it came out. It was one of those songs everyone had heard about long before they got to hear it. 8)

I never imagined I'd hear Kronos Quartet here, but at the same time I'm not surprised....
Haha... excellent. Kudos to whomever uploaded this... --d
