While this isn't my favorite of his songs, I love love love Jim White. I've seen him in concert (fabulous), but I'm still not sure I believe he's a real person... Raised Pentacostal in the Florida panhandle, he has been a taxi driver in New York, a model in Milan, a drug addict, and I think a surfer. His songs are full of oddball characters and muddy Southern river water. For starters, check out "Baby why don't you cry" (No Such Place) "Heaven of my heart Heart" (Wrong-eyed Jesus) and "Alabama Chrome" (Dig a Hole in that Substrate...").
