It's always sounded fine to me.  It was a demo that Thomas had recorded by himself; the only instruments are an organ and a percussion track from an early rhythm machine.  Apparently the producer at the label he pitched it to wanted to re-record the song with a full band, then listened to it some more and decided that "it was already done."
