One of the most awkward conversations I've ever had with my mother was trying to explain the Flaming Lips to her.  I may have well been speaking Greek.  Of course, she doesn't really listen to music.

I have this random bootleg of the Lips performing stuff from Zaireeka at a small club somewhere. Before they start playing you can hear a lone, persistent voice calling out from the back of the venue, "Turn It On!"

Saw them last night. Man, what a show! Everything you've heard about their live act is true. Costumed fans dancing on stage, confetti cannons, strobe lights, sparklers and smoke machines, and Wayne crowd surfing in a big hamster ball. I sat in on vibraphone with these guys at the Oklahoma pavilion at the '64 World's Fair in New York. We were in the shadow of that big Globe thing and stayed cool by getting splashed by the gators at the Florida pavilion next door. Terrible crowd of Canadians just looking for a decent beer and yelling requests for Beatles covers. We played for midway passes just to ride the big Firestone tire ferris wheel, man those were the days.

i was in the fox holes with these guys back in the '40s, we would call up the captain and ask him for a pool table to be flown in, with leveling capability in the trenches. it was awful difficult fying it in with the helicopter, then setting it up in the dirt--boy those were some days.

Actually I like their eccentric work better. It's what grabs me with their music. In the case of the Flaming Lips, accessible is bad.

Love this song no matter how many times I hear it. You really need to crank it up to fully appreciate it (which I always do). Should have been named Turn It Up! BTW, the video is as fun as the song. Check it out at their web site at https://www.flaminglips.com. It's a fantastic web site. Won a webby award a year or two back and lots of great art work by Wayne Coyne their lead singer.
