let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears
while we all sup sorrow with the poor
there's a song that will linger forever in our ears
oh, hard times come again no more

'tis a song' a sigh of the weary
hard times' hard times come again no more
many days you have lingered around my cabin door
oh' hard times come again no more

while we seek mirth and beauty
and music light and gay
there are frail ones fainting at the door
though their voices are silent
their pleading looks will say
oh, hard times come again no more

'tis a song' a sigh of the weary
hard times... hard times come again no more
many days you have lingered around my cabin door
oh, hard times come again no more

'tis a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave
'tis a wail that is heard upon the shore
'tis a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave
oh, hard times come again no more

'tis a song'a sigh of the weary
hard times' hard times come again no more
many days you have lingered around my cabin door
oh, hard times come again no more
oh, hard times come again no more

What?! Go back to your respective rooms, nose in the corner, and listen harder! (you fools)

This song, and this version is awesome.Anybody who dosen't think so really doesen't know music.Never heard of the band before, and saw the movie "Elizabethtown".It fit so perfectly in the movie,(along with the rest of the soundtrack)and I had to know who this band was.Isn't that what music is,discovering new music that inspires you,and moves you.Eastmountainsouth did with "Hard Times".I'm bummed I'll never get to see them live.
Pretty good rendering of the song.
And it goes on and on and on......
Dylan does a fine job on this song, but this version is horrible.

The definitive version of this Steven Foster song is by Peter Mulvey, off of "Glencree." He recorded it live in Ireland, with Juliet Turner. More bottom and a lot more passion. If you ever see this Mulvey album, pick it up, you won't regret it.
I'll have to look that up. The Eastmountainsouth version is the only one I know. I love it.

Amen to that! And with Goody lending his electric mandolin effects, sweeeeeeeet!!!

The harmonies make my teeth itch. Ick. Sorry.

The good news is that both Peter and Kat are still active musicians, and Peter is on tour! https://www.peterbradleyadams.com https://www.katbode.com

Except that one is a girl and the other is not! ....But otherwise yes~!
Heard this before on RP, just can't take this drone again!

I was just thinking the same thing!
Claustrophobic close harmony !
Once again, another reason to listen to RP
These girls sound a lot like the Indigo Girls.

Love the simplicity of lyrics and music here. Very nice to my ears!

First time I heard this song was by Jennifer Warnes - must say that I prefer Jennifer's version.

I too am disappointed to hear Eastmountainsouth has broken up. I came to them thanks to RP. Wonderful songs.

Yes - that is an excellent version, too!

A very nice version of the old Stephen Foster song.
I would like to hear this song done by Nancy Griffen on RP
Just an outstanding tune. Clearly one of my favs on RP.
I'm always surprised when I hear a song on RP for the fifth time and realize I haven't yet rated it. This song is wonderful...an 8, easily. It's not just that the harmonies are pleasant, but the melody is fantastic as well.
being a new-yawka, i'm not really into country , but this is beautiful!!
I used to say, all music has its merits, except country. But RP has proven me wrong on more than one occasion, including this one. Love the harmonizing.
I like this more and more.
It sounds a little like Dar Williams, this is a compliment. I agree the harmonies are lovely.

They sound like 4ths, no? I agree, very good.
Just upped my rating to an 8. This song is kick-ass.
A haunting song, whose message more than 100 years old still resonates with us today...beautifully done
a remarkable song and while she has not recorded it, it always makes me think of hazel dickens.
Great song. Covered a few times by Emmylou Harris. IMO, the best is the live version from the "At The Ryman" album.
Rating going up.....

This song is by Stephen Foster, the great American songwriter from the nineteenth century. He's also the author of Camptown Races and Oh Susannah. I like Willie Nelson's version.
Supposedly, out of the hundreds of songs Foster wrote (including "The Old Folks At Home " and "My Old Kentucky Home"), this one was his favorite. Quite a haunting tune.
Sweet harmony!
Simple yet complex, kinda like Amish furniture. Great stuff!
I am a sucker for harmony....
It's not "You Dance" (which is a major "10"), but this is a very good song anyway!
Great song. Does sound a lot like NOMADS INDIANS SAINTS era Indigo Girls - and that's a good thing.
Great song, perfect -> 10 Points
Gorgeous...I heard it and immediately bought it for myself from the iTunes store. Excellent cover of a classic.
Great Tune...Thanks RP
sooooo pretty.
Cool - I love the harmony
I won the CD at the RP Spring Fling in San Francisco in March, 2004. All in all it's a pretty good album. There are a couple of clunkers and it's mostly slow paced like this song but I think it's a good debut album for them and I'll be interested in hearing what they come up with next. Oh and yes, it is a man and a woman

At first I was amazed to hear an Indigo Girls song that I liked, then I checked the playlist. Beautiful song!
Whoah - this group is new to me. Love It!!

This is just an excellent song. - It was especially perfect when I was driving along the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah Park, Va. a few weeks ago. Stopping at one of the view spots looking out at the mountains with this song in the background defies description.
I'm sure this song is great when there's atmosphere to accompany it. However, while sitting at my desk and staring at the screen in the midst of an endless workday, it's just boring and annoying.
Man, she sounds just like Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls! Amazing. KAC

My experience is nearly identical to skindy's. I would only add that there is too little male/female harmonizing in popular music and this is a fine exception.
Hmm. I thought this was two women. I guess I'll know for sure once I buy the album.

but how do you feel about this?
This song is so beautiful. Sometimes when you are listening to music you are kindof half paying attention. This is one of those songs that sneaks up on you, taps you on the shoulder and says "Excuse me. You should really listen to this."
I love this song. So nice and peaceful.
that guitar "thud" sounds like dire straights :D

My ears always perk up when I hear something by eastmountainsouth on RP. I don't hear them quite often enough to identify them without peeking, though... so I check the playlist, and then find myself saying "hey, it's that great new group again!" Kudos for introducing them to us, Bill!

poignant. moving. good harmony. I hear it a lot on here, but I like it a lot.

I think there will be music that will last, but you never know which music, at the time. Mozart was buried a pauper in an unmarked grave, after composing his own Requiem mass. Then there's Nick Drake. You never know. That said, I'm betting Shakira isn't going to make it.
I think the whole point of Shakira is to make you want to make it with her, not for her music to make it a 150 years. If you look at it that way, then .. well, mission accomplished.
i cannot stand this crap anymore
I bought this album about 2-3 months ago along with a bunch of others (all through RP link to Amazon of course) and this is the only album I haven't tired of....a close toss up is Be Good Tanyas' Blue Horse. But eastmouuntainsouth has more diversity. Read on their website they will tour with Joan Baez and Lucinda Williams (not together of course). They were in concert in LA and I missed them....boo hoo...needed someone to go with I think.

I saw NickelCreek a couple of weeks ago in Denver, you were probably there. I was disappointed...it was a very boring show. Although I agree that this group sounds a lot like them...good for the background and instrumentation, bad for excitement.

It's been a while since I was this excited about a new group. I REALLY want this album.
Thanks Bill :D Recently purchased this CD after hearing them on RP. Still enjoying and have turned on a few friends to this duo in the past few days.
Very nice Bill. I see you played this band a couple of times in the last few hours. I would very much like to hear more.

Yeah you're right it does.
This appears to be a new discovery of yours as I\'ve heard them once in every RPlistening session Ive had this week and twice in this sitting. I\'m not complaining! I agree there is definately some Indigo Girls influence in this particular cut. No problem there, a lot of bands would do well to take a step or two closer to IG. Sure doesn\'t sound like an LA band. Thanks for the introduction!
Thanks for introducing me to this group! Seems like on all of the songs I like, I end up clicking over to see who it is and it\'s them. Great harmonizing~ :)

This is a great song, has a very spiritual feel to it.
I like this better than Indigo Girls fare: better voices, better harmony, better atmosphere, and overall a less forced feel to the music. :D
Excellent version of the classic tune--thanks!
Anyone remember the Rembrandts? Similar tight harmonies here. I like!
Nice song and nice album Thanks Bill for loging onto the worldclassrock discussion group! :)
Great new group on RP, I\'ve liked everything of theirs that I\'ve heard lately. Very nice addition to the mix.
Not bad! :D
Nice harmony - got my attention right away.
This is nice, but I prefer Marianne Faithful\'s version. Does anyone have it to upload?
Very nice, but the 1 and 3 beats continually catch me off guard.
WOW. This caught me off guard! This is really, really good. I am kinda blown away!
Indigo Girls???
