When all the limbs are numb and clean,
And you're in transit, dream-to-dream,
I'll drift there to meet you, lazybones.

When all the world has lain and sank,
And money sleeps inside the banks,
I'll drift there to meet you, lazybones.

Cameraman sways to remember how the eye dances,
Drunkenness is a hand-held scrambling down Delancey.
I come stumbling; well, I hear you had to take a shine,
And firing at random, I hear the rays fell upon mine.

Cool you, Miss Amaze, with a handful of water.
Trucks encircling, bearing down, coming louder.
If I could stay here, under your idle caress,
And not exit to the world and phoniness and people.

When all the noise has left your head,
Will someday you rise off the bed?
I'll be there to lift you, lazybones.

Nice one dude, never heard this before.
Excellent - love this album!
Annoying. The background "rhythm" sounds like an appliance alarm that refuses to stop.
This is just plain hideous.  Who told this guy he's a singer, his Mom?  Sucko-barfo to da max.
its coughing on my soul! the minor key is making me freak. ah!
Yes! I played the hell out of Soul Coughing in the late 90's to the point of burn out.
Refreshing to hear it again after so many years. Doughty's voice is cooly unique. Glad it is in the RP mix.
One of the best whole-albums ever. Well worth the sticker price.

Sebastian Steinberg - he's been a favorite of mine ever since I first heard SC, way back when. Since this was before I stumbled onto RP, I must have heard them on college radio. He does have a very nice touch.

woot!
Only heard the last seconds of this song and hear it for the first time. The violin at the end reminds me of a song by George Michael: Cowboys & Angels...
Yes! Love SC.

I can hear the similarities - but I think DM has more range to his voice than this guy.
Sounds like Dave Matthews...
hmmm, a tune I can't make my mind up about.

That can only be a good thing as it makes me think
This deserves a yes!{#Dancingbanana}

Wow, does this ever take me back to my college days. Soul Coughing was one of those great "alternative" acts that the hipsters all thought they had discovered independently, but in fact everyone was listening to. Good times.
Saw these guys live in Tempe, AZ and it was so cool how the drumkit bass drum was tuned to resonate with the frequency of the stand up bass. Good stuff.

Less definitely IS more and love the slow crawl of this son. Deliciously sinister.

I always thought it was someone singing a lullaby to a good friend who was in a coma and might not wake up.

+1.

From Ruby Vroom to Smofe and Smang... Doughty and crew can rock my thang.

Good grief, my cats will NEVER get their dinner!  Each time I try to leave my computer to feed them another great song comes on and I promise,"Sorry guys, just another five minutes."

My cats hate Radio Paradise at mealtimes...{#Tongue-out}

I always loved Soul Coughing — they really capture something about New York in the nineties. (Hey, remember when money used to sleep inside the banks?)

Yeah, I've been a fan since I stumbled onto "Ruby Vroom" here on RP.

{#Lol} ROTFLMAO! It's true.

Vocals = "Refreshments"... coincidence... or same...? I kinda like those "on the edge" vocals — could flip at any moment — or already has and just hasn't snapped lately... ...laaaaazzzzyyybones....{#Fight}

Don't much like the voice but love the sentiment. {#Cool}

love mike doughty's voice

I think I'm in the minority - don't really enjoy this.  Admittedly a unique voice  - just no range to it.  Same with the music - pretty bland.  Maybe I bore too easily....

More Doughty and Soul Coughing, please!!

Indeed I did notice that you played Mike Doughty track 27 Jennifers for the first time, almost exactly 2 hours ago.

Well done!

i don't often see cd cover that ugly
I liked "16 Horses" more... It was not that boring.
The more I hear of them, the more I like 'em.

That has to be the best description of Soul Coughing I ever read and it is dead on.
I love Soul Coughing. Thanks Bill.

Amen. Always a special place in my ear for their tunes. Still have the poster of their show at the Starfish room in Vancouver from back in the days of 'Ruby Vroom'. Even the sound check was fun. Doughty repeating "Marlboro, Marlboro, Marlboro" to get his tongue rolling. Every member contributed something special, and the sum of the parts was mmmmmmmmm.
Sebastian Steinberg is a genius bassist.

Arrrrrggggg! I ALMOST saw them open up for Buckley at the 9:30 Club in D.C. I got stuck working all night on a project that never wound up being produced. Three months later Jeff drowned in the Wolf River. After that I swore that I will never miss a show that is really important to me.
I share that outlook entirely. I must've been in a bad mood the last time this tune passed through...it's not so terrible. Pretty good, anyway. Not going to win many originality points, but it's entertaining in its own way.
awesome!!!!! thx!

Crap, I rushed to check this because I thought it was something new by Mike Doughty. Guess I was wrong, just someone who sounds like him. /sarcasm
Great to see live. Preferably in a small club. They have command of a lot of energy.

These guys simply rock. Every time I saw them from small clubs to large venues, they put on a great show. I never thought that a three piece band could be so dynamic. The idea of playing samples live, in time blew me away. And Yuval Gabay's drumming is amazing, that guy has amazing stamina.
Maybe my favorite Soul Coughing tune. Outstanding.

And I was having such a good day, too. Changed my mind. Dropped to a 1.
The least horrible Soul Coughing song I've heard yet. I'll give it a resounding 2.
According to www.scug.com where Mike Doughty has written a bunch of meanings for songs this is how it went down. "Lazybones: I played a two-note thing on the gee-tar at the rehearsal studios--back when we used to do room 5 at Context on Avenue A, that's where most of these songs became Soul Coughing songs--and Yuval had that weird jungle tango beat suddenly, and then Sebastian had the bassline. I went home that night and came up with a melody and the lyrics--a story about a drunk who loves a junkie, and even though he knows that their conflict of drug-loves dooms their relationship, he finds her charming when she's high and has nodded out."
I like this band name. Had never heard of it before and am now interested, as I listen to this interesting song. Soul coughing ... the connnotations are interesting to ponder on a gray day.
I've always thought that this song was about someone in a coma, someone he cares about, someone he is watching while standing next to the bed. "someday you'll rise off the bed, and I'll be there to meet you, lazybones..."
Wow, I was just thinking of this song less than an hour ago. Good to hear it again.

Yup -- his name is Mike Doughty and he has at least 2 cd's - "Haughty Melodic" and "Skittish/Rockity Roll"

Disseminated wins for me.
Who came first, Soul Coughing or Switchfoot? (In other words, who ripped off whom?)

Soul Coughing is the bees knees! They really know how to play a live gig. I saw them on a club date in Seattle, and when they started into "Down to This", the whole place nearly went apesh*t. I miss 'em. If they and Cake had ever toured, it'd have been poetically perfect.
Here, Here!! When I saw them, a venezuelan band called Los Amigos Invisibles opened up for them--did they make it to the west coast? They were VERY cool...I wonder if rp has any of them...
Remind me ..A PERFECT CIRCLE.. :propeller.gif:
Thanks for a great soundtrack to my morning Bill. Crowded House, Beatles, Snow Patrol, Soul Coughing - couldn't be much better IMO.
Someone hit the guitar player he is stuck.
Love this dudes lyrics....non-sensical beauty. the stand-up bass is f*ing outstanding.

No filler from this group. The Ruby Vroom album is chock full of knockouts, too.

Absolutely... what a great combination that would be to see ..
Never can say enough good about Soul Coughing..... Keep it coming! What a shame they called it quits...... frustration with the music industry could do it to anyone I guess!!
This is the reason I listen to RP! Don't think I've ever heard this song played on *any* radio station. Then again, I live in one of the lamest areas in terms of quality radio stations. (click here) Keep up with the voice of soul coughing!
When my son was 2 we used to play this album for him on long car rides because it would stop him from fussing. As a result the disk stayed in the car player for over a year. Yes there can be too much of a good thing. However, I also took my then 3 year old to a SC concert which was a big thrill for him. Good orchestration on this version...
one of my favorite S.C. songs!!

Yes. Skittish I believe is the title. I ordered it and it comes pretty much hand printed and hand burned. Cool. Soul Coughing songs especially from this album just grow and grow on you. Probably my fav song as well. But El Oso came after this album. 4 years after this album
Soul Coughing is great. I got to see them in college and the drummer was , as my friend said at the show, a god. I have never seen a drummer so talented. Thanks RP.
the lead singer M. Doughty is doing solo stuff. His CD is pretty good.
He did a soundtrack for an independent film... I can't remember the name now, though. He was down at South by Southwest in Austin promoting it this year, and did a 1.5 hour solo show there which ruled the school; --d

yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Great, great, GREAT band. Play more!! (And thanks to my wonderful partner in life for turning me on to them).
Don\'t hate it - it\'s just kind of there. Kind of appreciate the fact the music is kind of lazy sounding and it\'s called lazybones.
