I imagine they were largely referring to Dick Dale, and his version of "Misirlou", which is an Eastern Mediterranean folk song.  Dale was of Lebanese descent and often used what were considered "eastern" scales and modes.

Secret Agent Man was a short-lived spy-fi television series that aired on UPN in 2000.

The series, created by writer Richard Regen, starred Costas Mandylor as Monk, a gallivanting secret agent, who was one of a team of agents that included Holliday, played by Dina Meyer and Davis, played by Dondre Whitfield. The team reported to Brubeck, played by Paul Guilfoyle. The series followed their missions.

All the lead characters share the last names of jazz musicians Thelonious Monk, Billie Holliday, Miles Davis, and Dave Brubeck.

The series used an updated version of the 1960s hit song "Secret Agent Man" for its theme song. Because the original version of this song was also used as the theme song for American broadcasts of another television series, the 1960s British TV series, Danger Man, there were some mistaken impressions that this series was somehow a spin off or remake of the earlier program, but other than the theme song, no connection were made evident.

Only 12 episodes were broadcast before the series was cancelled.

Much as I like this stuff, I once went to a Beat the Bands competition where 7 out of 8 bands played this and the other one played 'Surfin Safari', or maybe it was the other way around. It was a long session.

Nice playing, but pretty strait forward. Maybe true to the original would be a better way to say it. Would like to hear some of his original stuff. Serious style points for that guitar, and what a cool experiment, but I can't imagine that it's all that useful. What do you do, reach over the top neck, in between, or try to go under? Either way I think it would be difficult to use. Would rather have a tele around my neck and a pedal steel in front of me I think.

I always dig the surf -- including this -- but this really isn't the best surf guitar out there. The originals of almost all these covers have much more inspiration and enthusiasm, even if they don't have the skill.

Although it would appear that Junior Brown has not been played on RP since 2004, (based on the last entry I observed) I really enjoy his verbal wit and guit-steel playing. ("I got a wife with a frying pan and when she talks, I listen"-smart man!) Saw him in November of 2005. He is a bit crisp and quick-moving in concert, but mellifluous nonetheless. It was quite interesting to observe 3 men in suits playing their backsides off. A direct contrast to the generally slovenly appearance of many performers. The line for general admission seating snaked way outside the building. That says something for Junior Brown as the weather in Detroit is less than pleasant in late November. (a good concert is the ONLY reason I would travel to Detroit anyway) The crowd was most receptive. I would pay to see him again.
