I imagine they were largely referring to Dick Dale, and his version of "Misirlou", which is an Eastern Mediterranean folk song.  Dale was of Lebanese descent and often used what were considered "eastern" scales and modes.

Like the "Magic Flute" in the movie Amadeus?

Erm.  Weird bendy notes to my ear, too. Odd, I was reading the cover as "Crazy Times" and was wondering where the T had gone ...
PIPELINE!

Surf's UP!
Like it very much. Not as hard driving as Duck Dale.  Maybe some "Santo and Johnny" to follow?  Ventures wound be too obvious... Thanks for memory ride.

Not much surfin' happening there in the Rockies?

Secret Agent Man was a short-lived spy-fi television series that aired on UPN in 2000.

The series, created by writer Richard Regen, starred Costas Mandylor as Monk, a gallivanting secret agent, who was one of a team of agents that included Holliday, played by Dina Meyer and Davis, played by Dondre Whitfield. The team reported to Brubeck, played by Paul Guilfoyle. The series followed their missions.

All the lead characters share the last names of jazz musicians Thelonious Monk, Billie Holliday, Miles Davis, and Dave Brubeck.

The series used an updated version of the 1960s hit song "Secret Agent Man" for its theme song. Because the original version of this song was also used as the theme song for American broadcasts of another television series, the 1960s British TV series, Danger Man, there were some mistaken impressions that this series was somehow a spin off or remake of the earlier program, but other than the theme song, no connection were made evident.

Only 12 episodes were broadcast before the series was cancelled.

Hooked-on... surfin'.  Wonderful!

Oh hells yeah... love this. Junior rules. Thanks RP!

At this level, I agree completely Dragonfly_Launch wrote:

COWABUNGA, DUDES!!! BTW, the rest of this CD is pure black-top, honky-tonk blues--so when you get to this cut, you're reeling. Very cool.

*slaps knee* Good one!
Much as I like this stuff, I once went to a Beat the Bands competition where 7 out of 8 bands played this and the other one played 'Surfin Safari', or maybe it was the other way around. It was a long session.
Who's the man that lives a life of danger? Secret Agent Man!
Just upped this to 10. Giddy-up!! (and I'm sure my wife still hates it).
Clang! Honk! Tweet! Yee-haa! 7 -> 8
Sorry naysayers, but surf played this well is just badass.

Experiment? He's been playing those for over 20 years. It hasn't been an experiment for a couple decades

Either way I think it would be difficult to use. Would rather have a tele around my neck and a pedal steel in front of me I think.
Look him up in Youtube. The Guit-Steel is indeed an awkward if cool instrument. Must be played supported on a stand.
Manic Streat Preachers will do nicely thanks mucho
Some of the 1st songs I learned on guitar, always a sweet spot for them. Check out The Vultures, a Grisman band I believe.
Nice playing, but pretty strait forward. Maybe true to the original would be a better way to say it. Would like to hear some of his original stuff. It is gray and foggy here. I needed this. Thanks Bill!
I hear some Pulp fiction and Austin Powers here. That's a good thing to me.
I always dig the surf -- including this -- but this really isn't the best surf guitar out there. The originals of almost all these covers have much more inspiration and enthusiasm, even if they don't have the skill.
Fun stuff!! Great picking, too.
Please don't do this again!
Bill, Why wait almost 11 months to replay it? With a 7.6 rating I would think it would get more airplay.
My first band!!!
I am justa doing my job on the highway patrol
just bumped this one from 7 to 8!

When the Johnny Rivers version of "Secret Agent Man" was out, I used to think he was singing "Secret Asian Man." (You know, spying in Red China and all that!)
Too funny!!! (A co-worker happened by just now and said she always thought the lyric was "secret Asian man" too... and always wondered why!)

Saw Junior last summer- really good show- he opened for Bob Dylan. Guy can play, thats for sure.
I bet he's a good welder too.
Surf's up Baby!! whoo hoo!
After the "Voodoo" set that just played this song actually works. By the way; is the man on the cover holding the bastard son of the Key-tar?

Gawd, please never play this again.
way too long.
never liked this kind of music.
Prefer SRV's.
Jr Brown RAWKS!
this sounds just like 'secret agent man' to me. I prefer the original.
Great medley! I'm a California boy living in Sweden, bad weather and all - missing the surf in So.Cal - and this song really made my morning! Thanks Bill!
I'm old enough to remenber and love some good ol' fashioned surf guitar. This is just what the doctor ordered to lift my spirits on a cool, damp NY State day!

Eh. I don't get it. Medleys always rub me the wrong way. And he plays these songs pretty close to the originals, so I don't see the point.
I agree -- each of these songs stand well on their own ground! No need to mush them all together. Although this is definitely not bad listenin!
Oh, damn. I thought I'd left this kind of music behind when I left high school. Very competent and well done, if you like this sort of thing.
Giggety.

If you ever get a chance to see JR Brown just open your mind. This guy can play...IMHO and puts on a great show.
can't believe i'm getting to hear this- wow!
Although it would appear that Junior Brown has not been played on RP since 2004, (based on the last entry I observed) I really enjoy his verbal wit and guit-steel playing. ("I got a wife with a frying pan and when she talks, I listen"-smart man!) Saw him in November of 2005. He is a bit crisp and quick-moving in concert, but mellifluous nonetheless. It was quite interesting to observe 3 men in suits playing their backsides off. A direct contrast to the generally slovenly appearance of many performers. The line for general admission seating snaked way outside the building. That says something for Junior Brown as the weather in Detroit is less than pleasant in late November. (a good concert is the ONLY reason I would travel to Detroit anyway) The crowd was most receptive. I would pay to see him again.

What a great tune. Junior Brown is great. Try "Too Many Nights in a Roadhouse"
What a great song. I've never heard this before but it's a fantastic mix of guitar work.
Bill, you put together great sets. It would be kinda funny to hear Hendrix's "Third Stone From the Sun" after this fine medley. Just my 2 cents, adjusted for inflation.
Way cool, daddy-o! 8)
Most Excellent
More Junior on RP!
Great Surf Guitar! Although DICK DALE IS KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
