Somewhere on a South Pacific island
Sits a young man staring at the surf
His native girlfriend died a death quite violent
A tribal sacrifice made to the Earth

She was brown, her hair was black, her eyes were blue
A chief's daughter, Leilani was her name
She and her young man made a handsome two
But lava tore them both apart again

He'd say, Leilani, don't go to the volcano
He'd say, please don't go to the volcano

They were saving for a little hut
He collected sea shells every day
And every night they'd share a cigarette
But the ancient, angry gods got in the way

He'd say, Leilani, don't go to the volcano
He would plead, please don't go, I'll miss you so

Katoomba hey! Macumbah ho! Umgawah!
Katoomba hey! Macumbah ho! Umgawah!
Katoomba hey! Macumbah ho! Umgawah!
Hey! Ho! Hey-eh!
Hey! Ho! Hey-eh! Ah
Leilani crula-bula-ulladulla-wok-a-tai
Aba-laba-laba Hut! Aba-laba-laba Hut!
Leilani nevageta-huta-tera-cota-tile
Aba-laba-laba Hut! Aba-laba-laba Hut!
Umgawah!!!
Hey! Ho! Hey-eh!
Hey! Ho! Hey-eh!
Hey! Ho! Hey-eh!
Ah Ah

Still the young man sits there on the beach
He's staring misty-eyed out into space
He's thinking about his girlfriend, of late deceased
At least her death had purpose, his life is a waste

And his life is a waste
Please don't go, I love you, I love you, I love you so

Nothing new to hear here, move on. Good driving beat though.

All those Aussie bands sound the same anyhow.  I thought this was The Skyhooks at first.

Wooohoooooo!  The Hoodoos Gurus!  One of my favorites from the past.....
I saw this band live back in 1985 as an opening act for Marshall Crenshaw and they blew everyone's mind... including Marshall Crenshaw off the stage. They still sound original today - thanks for playing.
Son of "Ant Music?"

It's odd that RP doesn't play the Guru's "I Want You Back," from the same album.  One of the greatest power pop songs from the 80s, IMO.

I agree.  Love that song.

Ah!, 1984 jammed into Maroubra Seals venue, many beers spilt all over the floor rocking to the Gurus. This song catapulted them into the legendary status in the Aussie music industry. Great song, great band, great memories and great choice Bill.

As an Aussie living in the UK can i just say at this point i love you Bill

GREAT SONG - bring it on!

Crikey I haven't heard this one since the stone age! A great Aussie band who started out doing kind of garage-band punk pop, and ended up wallowing in mainstream mediocrity by the end of the 80s.

F YEAH!  HOODOOS take me back to raging in high school.  love it.

If I were DJing this set I'd be queuing up "Let the Day Begin" to spin after this song...

Ah, that glam-stomp beat... It's served Norman Greenbaum (though I'm more familiar with the Doctor and the Medics version of that one), The Sweet, Adam and the Ants, Marilyn Manson, Goldfrapp and this lot and others well.

I was trying to place it...definitely Spirit In the Sky.

Where's the 11 button for the Hoodoo's?!?!?! No...the 11111111 button. Rocked this planet. Saw them twice in small clubs...they tore the place down every time.

This whole album has served me very well. Great driving music although I tend to speed listening to it. Definitely back roads, leave it in 3rd gear, pushing towards redline kinda groove!

A small venue would be 50 or 100, not 1000, in my experience. The first time I saw the Doors, it was in a nightclub audience of 25.

i would give my left one to have been there with you
Given the beat and the album art, the ONLY logical segue to this is something from T. Rex!

UNGAWAH!!! swahili for "this rocks"
A groovy song from a great party album. And the cover picture is actually a photo taken from my backyard (damn citronella candles can't keep those annoying dinos away).
this is pretty badass
Excellent! If I could only have caught them on their recent US tour...">
Brings back memories of 1986, me and my friends living in a former frat house near campus in Edmonton. The parties we had... :-)))
Did he say A-kuna Ma-Tada? Kickin song!
Ungawa! Me Tarzan , you Jane. Me like.
Cool tune. I like the Gurus. Gotta get Bittersweet, Come Anytime and Axe Grinder on here.

Mission Beach? I love that place. I went there years ago and right after we ran out of beer, some kid from the store up the hill came down to see if we wanted to order any food. So we ordered food and more beer of course. One of the most beautiful beaches I've ever been to.
I beg your pardon?
The Hoodoo Gurus ... only on RP - Thanks Bill !
REMINDS ME OF THE NEW ROMANTICS!
Great song for a 3 day weekend at the end of summer. I'm going to go to Mission Beach and toss a few beers back.

Just listened to it yesterday, the whole album. I was cranking the vinyl. What a great live band as well.
Slightly less annoying than the B-52's

wow! haven't heard this in ages! these guys were pretty good.
I've got the speakers cranking, then this song comes on. Gotta turn it down fast ho hum...
These guys should double bill with Wall of Voodoo. It would be the Wall of Voodoo Hoodoo Guru tour.

Absolutely the most underated band of the 80's. Ampology is a good setup of songs however it doest have Arthur,Zanzibar, hayride to Hell and other great songs. All of the CD's are good.....some better than others. They all grow on you though.
Great Song. HUGELY underrated band. More Gurus!

MARS NEEDS WOMEN (while we are going back to the eighties, I thought I would make this obscure reference to the song and artist of the same name that were themselves referring to the 1950s sci-fi movie of (also) the same name! Anyone remember this tune?)
Badassed.
Thrilling to hear it again, Bill. Since my turntable and records are back in the US, haven't heard this stuff for ten to twelve years. Sounds as good as it ever did, and that's damn terrific. Leilani's not quite as power pop perfect as "I Want You Back" but quirkier. Thanks again, so much!! You've got me thinking about buying Ampology, their 2 CD greatest hits collection, and if I do it, I'll do it with Amazon, from here. By the way, it would be sweet to seque this into "I Got You" by Split Enz. Any chance?
The anthem from my sophomore year at Ohio State. Along with the Femmes, naturally. I WAS A KAMIKAZE PILOT! THEY BOUGHT ME A PLANE BUT I COULDN'T FLY IT.... HOME!
The greatest band not enough people heard about. Search out their stuff. Stoneage Romeos, Mars need Guitars, Blow Your Cool, Kinky.
I second drH's comments. More of the Hoodoo. Hey Bill, how about playing these guys, the Loop Gurus, and Husker Du together? Ooh, and U2! "Husker Du 2 Hoodoo Loop Guru!"
My two favorite bands from the 80's...Wall of Voodoo and the Hoodoo Gurus. Mix a little B-52's and Oingo Boingo and it's a party.
I'd like to hear this whole album!!!! (I only have it on vinyl.) Nobody in the 80's rocked like these guys.
More Hoodoo Gurus Please I have not heard them for at least 10 years.
Great to hear the Hoodoo Gurus on the radio. I have loved them since the mid 80's. Have a great 2 CD box set of their material. Great great fun.
RP never ceases to amaze me! A relatively obscure Australian band from the 80s! (How do you find this stuff?) This has been gathering dust in my old cassette tape collection, but its still great to hear!
Oongawaaaaa! They were saving for a little hut! I think a little ritual sacrifice makes a song rawk!
