To spite the dark
In spite of the darkness
There I'll crave
There I'll crave
To get to the heart
In spite of the darkness

Great wide stretches of canvas
Signed by a godless name
Strange bright colours of madness
Only a fool would frame
Sketches of Pain

Sketches of Pain

Some cry shame
Some cry shame
We tore them apart
We failed to imagine
God might claim
God might claim
The works of art
We failed to imagine

Great wide stretches of canvas
Signed by a godless name
Strange bright colours of madness
Only a fool would frame

Same here ... I like TFF and own a couple of albums but was not aware of this one. I like!
I really like this album.
I think it's their best work
Thanks Bill!
Wow nice selection. Never thought I'd hear this outside my own playlist.
Thank you thank you thank you for playing this!  Solid 10! {#Hearteyes}
Gotta check out the tune Humdrum and Humble off this album in the way they mixed the left and right channels. Stellar.
Best song on this album. "Me and My Big Ideas" is another.
Great Song
Amazing Amazing. Love the picture and mood this conjures up.
Brilliant!
Haha, OK, I just got it...a wordplay on Miles Davis' "Sketches of Spain..."
Great tune. This sound always makes me think of Porcupine Tree.
the Guitar reminds me of Love Song by Elton John

More interestingly ... XTC's Dear God came out 2 years after this.. ;)

That may have been in an alternate universe.  "Dear God" by XTC, was released as a single in 1987; this Tears For Fears album was released in 1995.  Anyhow, the two songs don't sound very much alike to me.

Funny I was just extolling the later works of TFF to a drummer friend of mine. Raoul and the Kings of Spain is a rare gem.

Love TFF, especially The Hurting. If you're a TFF fan and only started from Songs from the Big Chair, make sure to go back and check out this gem!

I've been a TFF fan ever since Songs from the Big Chair .. and even had my father liking them on a long trip to KY moons ago.  Though I hate to say it, its my parents that caused me to have such a diverse like of most music.  The pop in it is nothing, the good music remains.

Woman in Chains
Badman's Song
Break it down again
Famous Last Words

Great songs, that I think will stand up to time.
I saw them on the tour of this album and it is one of my favorite concerts of all time.
Great song, great album.
Wow. This is amazing. Never would have guessed TFF. Larn sumpin' new eva day, huh?
I really need to get this album. I'm not sure why I haven't purchased it in the past.

This song exemplifies why I love RP so much. This makes it so clear that Bill and Rebecca truly are music lovers.Other radio station programmers would see this cut and say:

  • "This seems to suit our 70's/80's classic soft rock format ... but no, I've never even heard of this track ... delete."
  • "Tears For Fears! That will play to our older demo! But what's this Sketches of Pain thing? Delete."
  • "Never heard of this album."
  • "They only had a coupla hits, and this isn't one of them."
  • "Not on the Clear Channel playlist."

Keep doing what you're doing, Bill and Rebecca. You're the best.

{#Roflol} Here, here! Well said!

This touches me in so many ways.  Probably the time in my life when it came out, but has some great musical arrangements, which is something TFF have always been known for.  Come back and make some more music for us guys!

Wow:  I'm not familiar with much of their work after Songs from the Big Chair.  It looks like I'm going to have to look into this album!  This piece is beautiful.

yeah, totally... this album never saw the pop radio light of day. a friend lent it to me when it came out. i bought it and it remains one of the greatest recordings i own. def way better than happy ending or tomcats..

Kind of hear a touch of XTC... is it Dear God? in this song.

First Tears for Fears song that I even came close to liking.  Who knew?

{#Frustrated} This song is a sketch of pain. {#Beat}
Didn't hurt to see this performed live when the album was new. Outstanding album. Outstanding performance.

We need more from this album. I used to drive my old Honda Prelude around with the moon roof open blasting the cassette of Big Chair. I would repeat over & over the songs Head over Heels, & the one preceeding it. I had Elemental through high school. It's a great first solo effort by Roland Orzabal. Okay so Raoul & the Kings of Spain I bought when it came out and was too immature for it I guess. It was tossed into the trunk and forgotten. Finally when I got to college I picked up The Seeds of Love and fell in love again. So I dug out Raoul and discovered the best work released as TFF. It is so solemn, yet hopeful. This track is one of the best. I often play it for people who only know TFF for Shout or Everybody wants to rule the world. I highly recommend that you all go buy this album and share it with your friends! Then, if you have the patience check out Tomcats Screaming Outside by Roland Orzabal (released as him instead of TFF) It took a while to grow on me. I think I just relate well to Rolands frustrations with a Idealism getting juiced down to realism and cynicism. (He says "bulletts for the brains of the athiests" a far cry from "anything is possible when you're sewing the seeds of love") Hope you enjoyed my novellette!
I really loved what you had to say. This was by far the finest of the TFF songs I have ever heard, and I've loved most of it, especially their later stuff with Seeds Of Love. This is a 9, and I reserve the right to upgrade this to classic 10 status.
i LOVE tears for fears...I am a child of the 80's. but this? no.
Beautiful!!!
I loved this album cover to cover. Kudos Bill for playing this!!
It's a brave soul that attempts homage to Miles.
What an absolute gem. Never heard this song, never would have thought it to be Tears for Fears. Made my day.

Well put. I have a whole new outlook on TFF now. This is quite marvelous. Definately suited for a top-down, trees overhead, autumn day on a back road. Quality work.. 7.
