The deception with tact
Just what are you trying to say?
You got a blank face, which irritates
Communicate, pull out your party piece
You see dimensions in two
State your case with black or white
But when one little cross
Leads to shots, grit your teeth
You run for cover so discreet
Why don't they

Do what they say
Say what you mean
One thing leads to another
You told me something wrong
I know I listen too long
But then one thing leads to another

The impression that you sell
Passes in and out like a scent
But the long face that you see
Comes from living close to your fears
If this is up, then I'm up
But you're running out of sight
You've seen your name on the walls
And when one little bump
Leads to shock miss a beat
You run for cover and there's heat
Why don't they

Do what they say
Say what they mean
One thing leads to another
You told me something wrong
I know I listen too long
But then one thing leads to another
Yeah, yeah, yeah
One thing (one, one thing) leads to another

Then it's easy to believe
Somebody's been lying to me
But when the wrong word
Goes in the right ear
I know you've been lying to me
It's getting rough, off the cuff
I've got to say enough's enough
Bigger the harder, he falls
But when the wrong antidote
Is like a bulge on the throat
You run for cover in the heat
Why don't they

Do what they say
Say what they mean
One thing leads to another
You told me something wrong
I know I listen too long
But then one thing leads to another
Yeah, yeah

One thing (one, one thing) leads to another (one, another, thing, one thing)
One thing (one, one thing) leads to another (one, another, thing, one thing)
One thing (one, one thing) leads to another
One thing leads to another
One thing (one, one thing) leads to another (one, another, thing, one thing)
One thing (one, one thing) leads to another (one, another, thing, one thing)
One thing (one, one thing) leads to another

I'm glad RP quit playing this song...I HATE IT!
I won Reach the Beach from the best rock station in the Washington DC area (before they were sold and turned in to a christian station) WAVA 105. It's embossed with "this is for promotional uses only" in gold. I had to hurry to get to the station since I also won tickets for the same day. The Fixx was playing with Flock of Seagulls at Georgetown University...was that a million years ago all ready?
that was complete rubbish.   The only reason it gets 1 from me is there is no lower rating available (an oversight, if you ask me; just think of all those millions of negative numbers that would have been so much more appropriate as a rating for this tedious piece of nonsense)
Great tune, period.
A flower in a garden of weeds!
WOW! Haven't heard this for over a decade! Groovy!

Funny, I found myself using these exact words recently. It's applicable to everyone, everything at some point, of course.
I'll agree with an earlier comment. I really, really don't like 80s music. But this song holds up surprisingly well. In fact, I turned up my volume when I heard that recognizable bass line.
Reach the Beach...Southern Colorado, 1985...driving toward Woodland Park on winding roads...Luvv the Fixx.
There are a number of songs that first made me notice a bassline ... and eventually made be become a bass player. The bassline on this song is one of them.

I'm on your side on this debate. Love it. This came from "Reach the Beach" as I recall, before it landed on the compilation shown above. Great album. So it's dated. So am I.
Me too, Gregorama. Loved it then and still bopping to it now.
It's wrong, I know... but I kind of like that this song was used in the mortgage commercial. Right now, I can see the little graduation cap and insurance bills bashing the house toward the edge of the cliff...

Seems like there's some kind of 80's revival thing going on here at RP. A lot of good music came out during the 80's (no, really), but you have to look harder than the 'hits' of the day.
So, the 80s were basically the 70s with a bad attitude?
White dopes on funk. In a good way, that is.
A great tune from a great driving-rock band! ROCKING SET, Bill! I guess I ain't going anywhere...I've been putting off doing anything as long as these jams keep coming on sublime RP! Thanks!
Dang! This takes me back! Normally, one expects comments to be posted just after Bill plays the song - in this case, I just heard it in my car on a "rip" from the 17th... "That's Niiiice!"
I think this song holds up pretty well. I didn't like the 80s when they were happening, but I always thought The Fixx were a cut above most of the synth-pop going on at the time.

Great, kicky pop song. Just because stuff's from the '80s doesn't mean it's bad... in fact, this song suffers less from '80s-synth-disease than many. :)

They put on a great live show.

Ditto. I liked this song for about a month after it was released and that's the only thing stopping me from giving it the ole "sucko barfo."

couldn't agree more :D

Huh? Do you know what Eclectic means?
The local phone company is using this song in ads for high speed internet access.

no more ClearChannel clones! go to www.moveon.org/stopthefcc also, i'd much rather hear saved by zero or red skies at night, this one's pretty crappy

Didn\'t like it then either. Doesn\'t seem to fit this format...
Wow I remember going to see them at the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland when this song first came out! Still a great song.
I\'d rate this higher than an 8 if they hadn\'t put in that swoopy synthesizer. Really would\'ve kept that song from sounding so dated. Great song anyway.
