The monkey knows how you'll react
Creating want by holding back
Like some reverse pyromaniac
Let me try, baby, try

I propped my window up and then
I turned my back to lure you in
To rifle through what I might have been
Let me try, baby, try

Baby please, let me begin
Let me be your heroin
Hate the sinner but love the sin
Let me be your heroin

We have crossed the Rubicon
Our ship awash, our rudder gone
The rats have fled but I'm hanging on
Let me try, baby, try

Baby please, let me begin
Let me be your heroin
Hate the sinner but love the sin
Let me be your heroin

Great song, great album.
How can it be 20 years old? Yeesh.
More Aimee Mann PLEASE! Such a great songwriter with a unique voice. Sublime.

The lyrics say heroin, but it also works as heroine.

I think the lyrics are pulled from "lyric sites" like AZLyrics and Metrolyrics, which seem to use phonetic, speech-to-text software; I doubt anyone is typing out all those lyrics.  That is probably why they often include inaccurate homonyms or similar-sounding words.  Anyhow, nice tune.
Her voice is sublime.
Can't help saying this. Comment board like digging for gold. There's gold. And there's gravel.

You know play on words. Maybe they're both right.

This album got me through some rough times.
OK. I'll go. Bill, can we delete that Beyonce' post? Has no place here...

Perhaps the best song of this great somber album.
When Aimee was near her peak. What a one-of-a-kind Woman Song Writer!
Love her so!
Aimee baby, love ya. Same album 'No Subtle Men' is on, I think?
Aimee is so good.
So mellow, so sad.

"Let me be your heroine." (heroin?)

xx. here's a 10 chica.

no that's called supplication...
not that you wouldn't find something else to rant and bash America about anyway...

I really, really like this comment.  {#Clap}
Genius. The singer/songwriter is alive and well in this family.
8 years later, time has worn my love for some of the stuff on this album, but this seems to have gotten better...
Drums are unusual in this... I have a feeling they've either been sampled or are samples from elsewhere, but fit in really nicely with the rest of the track.

Love the album cover too, simple yet thought provoking for some reason I can't pin down!
A very nice voice she has!

Some of us actually know better than that, and the number is growing.  And for that, I thank God.

I've had relationships like that.  Beautiful, Thank you Aimee and RP
Very, very fine........class all over the park.

reverse me?

Sublime!
The 'reverse pyromaniac' phrase is pretty clear in context:
A monkey knows how you'll react
    Creating want by holding back
    Some reverse pyromaniac
    Let me try, baby, try
She's sitting there, not giving in, and by not doing anything stokes the fire inside the other person. She's causing him to burn more for her by holding back and doing nothing.

A reverse pyromaniac is some idiot who started something s/he thought would turn out one way, but completely went in the opposite direction than s/he had anticipated.  So in order to cover her/his ass, s/he tries to put things in reverse.  For example, let's say you thought someone would end up burning down the house, but instead s/he wanted to fix the house.  Well, then you would pull a reverse pyromania stunt.  CYA.  Get it?

Nice quip, but the visual imagery is more disturbing than physicgenius's post. And if physicgenius is SOOO busy at work, why post in the first place? Go figure.

I love Aimee Mann's music, particularly because it touches the deeper feelings of melancholy. Therefore, it's not everyday music for me, but still really like it. And I think this song is definitely about drugs. Not only the heroin reference, but it's called "High on Sunday 51". Duh.
High on Sunday High on RP High Hi V Tallin!

Good idea!
Another wonderful song. It's been a steady run of great songs- Iron and Wine to Arcade Fire to Supergrass to Aimee Mann- genius!
Good shite sister!
Those first two verses are an astounding summation of the bevhavior of many men and women in relationships. Hell, a girl and I are playing that exact game right now and I hate it.
I like the wordplay - "let me be your heroin" could also be "let me be your heroine" becuz she wants to save the person...?
Great singing, great instrumnets, awesome singing, and extremly good lyrics!
Less thinking, more feeling ... Aimee's got a knack for moody and I gotta say, I likey my music moody

OK, so any ideas what "sunday 51" is? One thing that occurred to me is that the 51st sunday of the year will always be around Christmas... Am I overthinking it?
Not sure... Aimee Mann wrote:

This seems to be about an addiction - probably a relationship. I don't think the title is a reference to Christmas or the holidays. The reverse pyromania seems to be about stopping a (metaphorical) fire or preventing one to watch the pyro attempt to start one again. A relationship thing? A drug thing also? Hell if I know ...I have to get back to work.

P.T. Anderson, the writer-director of Magnolia, penned it as an Homage to Aimee Mann's music. More information

Very droll Great CD, by the way
Love Aimee and this song partly because of the play on the words heroin and heroine. BTW I thought the frogs part of Magnolia was one of the best things I've seen in a film....
GREAT playlist -- Aimee, Keane, Arcade Fire, Iron and Wine, Death Cab. I'm very much digging RP today.

I like the movie too. Some things did not work (i.e. the frogs) but otherwise it was ok. I thought the first, maybe 30 minutes or so were fantastic. This is a good CD (actually had it in the car on a business road trip yesterday). Not as good as Bachelor Number 2, but still good nonetheless.

that's the beauty of it...if you're depressed...let her be your heroin :umbrella.gif: the cause is the cure

aimee mann has alot of good music out there, why did you pick this dreary song?
It's dreary in a beautiful kind of way, to me. If you haven't noticed, many of the tunes off of her last couple of albums are a bit on the downer side. But, she is still a real champ a writing songs in my book, and I wouldn't want to do without her music.
I love this song, I even bought the album. Aimee Mann is definately depressing stuff, but thats what great about her. Alot of the songs on this albumm make me feel better because she\'s so depressed, its soulful. I think this song is really clever because she says, \"Let me be your heroin\" but it could easily heard as \"Let me be your heroine\".
I just want to know what a \'reverse pyromaniac\' is? Is that the person that throws water on cigarette smokers?
Too much of this dreary one.

I agree. Your playing a little too much Aimee Mann for me.

I really like this song. As well as the rest of the album. But, the album feels kind of depressed to me.
