Lily is dancing on the table
We've all been pushed too far
I guess on days like this
You know who your friends are

Just another dead fag to you that's all
Just another light missing
On a long taxi ride, taxi ride

And I'm down to your last cigarette
And this "we are one" crap as you're invading
This thing you call love
She smiles way too much but
I'm glad you're on my side, sure
I'm glad you're on my side, still

You think you deserve a trust fund
Just because you want one
Sure you talk the talk when you need to
I fear the whole world is starting to believe you

Just another dead fag to you that's all
Just another light missing
In a long taxi line, taxi line

And I'm down to your last cigarette
And this "we are one" crap as you're invading
This thing you call love
She smiles way too much but
I'm glad you're on my side, sure
I'm glad you're on my side, still

Lily is dancing on the table
We've all been pushed too far today
Even a glamorous bitch can be in need
This is where you know the honey from the killer bees

I'm glad you're on my side, sure
I'm glad you're on my side, sure
I'm glad you're on my side, still

Got a long taxi ride
Got a long taxi ride

Listened to a few tracks of her new album - promising!
Without the written lyrics, it's next to impossible to discern what the heck it is that she's singing...Tori remains a mystery to me.  Some folks love her...and I just don't get it.  She's no PSD, but falls into the giant vat of "pretty forgettable" for me...
I went to high school with her - she is one of the sweetest people I've ever known.  Voted both "Most Likely to Succeed" and "Class Sunshine" which is quite a combination to be skilled and ambitious while at the same time genuine and down to earth.
At the beginning of the song I though I was listening to The Weepies

The "Two Angry Women" tour. Two excellent musical artists who were moving down a dark path. Tori's upbeat songs are so uplifting.

Chicago? I was there; amazing concert.

Not all of us :-)

Of course that could be because some of the people I dragged to the Tori show were more interested in Alanis.

That was a weird tour - not great venues for a Tori show.  Dug the tour she did with Ben Folds though...

I‘m Not familiar with Tori Amos work besides these few songs I‘ve got to know on RP, but upon listening to this one for the first time I immediately filed it as a 2002 to 2004 production. Just the sound of the guitars, ist reminded me strongly of John Mayers „Room for Squares“ which was produced around the same time. There‘s just something symptomatic about the style of early 2000 productions- not to sound too general- this one is of course narrowed down to said artists.
Tori is exceptional and this album had a continuum that was uplifting.  It's her one album that I will play like a book.

Good post, friend.  She's not normally my cup of tea, but this is definitely a good one.

Good song.
This might be my favorite Tori album, though Night of Hunters may have finally surpassed it... if not, it's a close second.

Love this track and the visceral power of "just another dead fag/just another light missing on this long taxi ride" in amongst the layered, rather sweet vocals and almost electronic haze of a soundscape.

Forty women in my mushrooming multitude of churches just said they love this song...

This song is really getting to me today, in a good way.
I like the vocal layering she does on this and many other songs. Reminds me of Joni Mitchell's work.

Four scumbag bike shop mechanics in our shop hate this song
I like this song better than other Tori Amos songs.  She isn't whining as much.  Sounds pretty good.  Good selection!

My sentiment exactly....

Have to agree. Even if it does have its lengths, it flows quite well and has some very fine tracks on it.

Also, on a more superficial note, her last album with a beautifully designed cover. Her botox-meets-photoshop look on recent releases just makes me sad (especially on Midwinter Graces, shudder - look below at your own risk).

Man, this song gives me the shivers sometimes. That and blind rage at those attitudes out there and coming face to face with them sometimes.

Mmm-hmm. That's what Tori excels at — wrapping the evil in a pretty candy shell so you don't notice it immediately.

At the high end of her range she gets a bit fingernails-on-chalkboardish for me.  But man, down low, there. . . .

Vocal layering is something of a cliche these days, but it really works on this song.
A Tori song that makes you happy. Not easy to find
Always love to hear Tori
I'm not generally a fan of her music, but this is really nice....
This is one of my favourites from her.
I'd like to hear "Me and a Gun" honestly.
This song actually doesn't piss me off.
AWESOME and THANK YOU for playing this.  "The whole world is starting to believe you..."  Keep up the good work RP!!!!{#Roflol}

Others might have other personal favorites, but I agree this album is simply terrific from start to finish. And what I like best is that all the songs are stunningly pretty, just like this song. None of her more challenging odd sounding songs on this record— and I do like some of her more weird songs, some not, but this record is just sparkling with harmonies, melodic beauty, and richly textured and catchy. It's the one that sold me on Tori. I should also add that I haven't fully grasped all the lyrics, which tackle a lot of female identity and women's struggles as well as feminist themes that Tori is obsessed with, but the songs are all part of a cycle in a whole concept album on this record.

While I don't agree that it's her best album (my personal fave is "Little Earthquakes"), I do think that this album was her best since "Under the Pink". Her other releases during that time were a little too spotty for me, and her lyrics were too obscure on some of the songs. There are exceptions to this, of course ("Hey Jupiter", for instance), but overall I preferred this album because it was more consistent all the way through.

I feel exactly the opposite: I lost interest after her first few albums, but I'm REALLY enjoying this song. YMMV
I'm glad Bill's been digging up some stuff from this album lately. The first Tori album I ever bought, and the first one to have a real personal connection to a period in my life... Kinda makes me nostalgic.
a song noone really needs from an album noone really needs. There's much more much better stuff by her.
Love this album, much better than the last one.
Love you Tori!

I'm not sure what you mean : OK the '80s are over, but this look, on the other hand, is timeless: I'd guess Tori chooses album art which hints at the music within. Perhaps the cover for Scarlet is supposed to evoke an era (of lost American innocence?), while Crucify is timeless. We'd been nailing ourselves to crosses long before the American experiment began.
LOVE IT. "This thing you call love, she smiles way too much" This album was the end of the good Tori, sadly.
YEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!

I like most of Tori's music, but this song is overrated, IMO. Also, I have seen recent interviews with Tori and her new age consciousness-raising mantra. She's a crazy-weird person...not someone I would want to know personally. Given her history, I guess that's understandable. She will spend the rest of her life (as a very sensitive artist) trying to compensate for what an older man did to her before she was 18.
I'm sure most crazy-weird people would shy away from you anyway.

Great song, first time I heard it. Liked the intro a lot and could hear Tori in it before she started singing...
Sweet.
I love this song...
Wow, a Tori song that I don't hate. This and "Cornflake Girl".

Hi! It's me, the Tori purist! Back to rant again... Tori focused... what's the point? Some of you are saying, it's so much better when she sounds like everyone else, i.e. not herself. Doesn't ANYONE like "Boys for Pele?" That album is definitely... oh wait a minute... what's the word... Oh yeah - ECLECTIC. Outrageous, experimental, evokative. This song doesn't suck, she obviously crafted it with care, but man, she's going to end up like Sting at this rate.
I'll always love her and feel that Pele is her best work. Choirgirl really worked for me, but since then it's been... well, this.
Well, I like the cover photo.

I feel that way about some of the most popular groups in history so i can relate. I feel that way about, dare I say it on THIS site, the Beatles. Same way about the Clash and Cake. But I on the other hand have yet to hear a Tori Amos song that I didnt instantly like. Very different, very emotional. Good solid stuff.

I love this Tori Amos, but I also love the Tori Amos that made the incredible cover of 97' Bonnie & Clyde - better than Eminem's by a mile.
it just occurred to me that i've really enjoyed tori amos for a really long time, and yet i've never actually purchased any of her albums. i think i'm going to...
Tori, focused.
She used to irritate me, but this whole CD is great. Great song too.
YES! finally a tori song i like. i knew there was hope.
One of her best songs in years.
This cd occupied me for the entire last winter. Amazing album...albiet a bit on the bassy side .. but, one great song after another. All friggen 18 of em!... got to see a number of them live when she came thru on the scarlet's walk tour. It's hard for me to understand some people's loathing of her. it's a word that gets used a bit too easily at times, but I think in the sphere of music Tori truly does qualify as genius. I think that people that hate her do so just because they don't have sufficient "m" factor in their I.Q... I guess it's not unlike an idiot trying to appreciate the theories of Einstein. It's just no use tryin to explain it to them.
Not huge Tori fan, but some of her songs are just plain excellent. This would be one of em.
This is the very best song from her wonderful road album 'Scarlet's Walk.' Since it was the second single off of this album, I'm almost certain she recorded a music video to accompany it. Has anyone seen it? I haven't been so lucky!

That's the last thing Tori fans want. Her first album sucked. She's even told her fans not to buy it.
I think he was talking about "Little Earthquakes", not "Y Kant Tori Rede", which most people don't know existed... Great song, BTW. Jason

Never been much of a Tori Amos fan, but this song makes me want to give her another chance.
I don't know why people think every album should sound like the first. I look forward to her new albums and lyrics. For all those who are also fans or even the ones who are not and are curious to find out more about what the album or songs are about heres a link to a show that aired December 17th on KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic. Just Tori and her piano performs a set of hand picked songs (something I'm sure some of us miss with Tori) and talks about some of the meaning of her songs and her album: https://kcrw.com/cgi-bin/db/kcrw.pl?show_code=mb&air_date=12/17/02&tmplt_type=show

My ears have trouble with a woman singing so as to sound like a very little girl . . . was she abused in her childhood, perhaps?

I will be open-minded of course. I generally really like Tori's music. As a matter of fact, Choir Girls and To Venus and Back are my favorites so far.
Me too, and I have them all and quite a few singles. Though both are generally better live, IMO.
I have yet to hear Boys For Pele and Little Earthquakes Those two are arguably her best works. I should make the effort to purchase them.
LE is an easy listen. It's hands down her most accessible album, and the lyrics are her most straight forward. OTOH, I find Pele to be her most difficult album. I like it now, but it took years to grow on me....mostly by way of hearing it live.....for while I find the album difficult, the songs are great live. Kevin
It wants to be great like some of Tori\'s other material but I agree with some earlier commenters: falls a little short. Still, I like its etheral, melodic sound and enjoy listening to it.
