I am surprised at all the negativity. RT's songs and characters are dark- they bring you down to the depths of your soul- truth and beauty mingle to reveal something REAL. His guitar work is masterful, his songwriting is sublime. Yes - his voice is recognizable and unique, but that is why he stands out.

To those who are not fans- go see him play solo live and you will be blown away- guaranteed!

Dogpound, obviously, you have never seen him live:  your attitude would change immediately.  Ask any guitarist their opinion of Richard Thompson:  anyone who knows their chops treats him like the royalty he is.

I am not a fan of this song, whether is the Thompsons or Los Lobos. It's a dirge that just drags me down, crashing and tumbling...problem must be on my end, because I love everything else both groups come up with.

FWIW, I think that Richard Thompson is extremely talented and clever; however, I mostly dislike his vocal style, but I like this better than most of his output. I like most of what he sang with his ex more than most of his other stuff. I really like much of his 2006 1000 Years of Popular Music release.

I love his voice so much...I'd even listen to him sing the pina colada song, the macarena song, baby one more time - all sorts of craptastic songs - but this one is pretty dull.

I would imagine in the context below they were referring to digital and mp3 compression, considering they were comparing CD audio vs. Radio Paradise vs. a live performance.  There's this link for the wiki article, but I'm afraid it's long on specifications and short on explainations.

But I love how you break down dynamic compression for industry usage!  Even though radio stations compress the hell out of advertisements so they blast your ears out while still falling within legal parameters - and that crap always startles me.  :(

I just love the hell out of Richard Thompson. He did a song called "I Agree With Pat Metheny," and another one dedicated to Janet Jackson (and her fashion malfunction.) Neither of these would be appropriate for RP, but I might just submit them anyway, because I'm an I'll-be-go-to-hell kind of person...

Its a great song and sounds even better with even less compression when he does it live {#Mrgreen}. I try to catch his shows whenever he is playing reasonably nearby.
