Paint what you know, not what you see
Hope blinds reason, thankfully
Know how it is when something fits
There's just a question of being it

I'd do anything to see you smile again
And I'd go anywhere so as not to feel your pain
I wanna live and the fear is all gone
I wanna protect and I know what it's from
I wasn't made for secrets like these
Chinese whispers, memories

Nothing is done without effect
There's nothing done that won't reflect
Pull one brick from an endless wall
Would it drown us all?

'Cause I'd do anything to see you smile again
And I'd go anywhere so as not to feel your pain
'Cause I wanna live where the fear is all gone
I wanna protect, and I know what it's from
I wasn't made for secrets like these
Chinese whispers and memories

You just need love like you say you do
And there may never be a time when it won't get through
Yeah, you know how it is when something fits
Now there's just a question of being it

And I'd do anything to see you smile again
But I'd go anywhere so as not to feel your pain
'Cause I wanna live and the fear is all gone
I wanna protect, and I know what it's from
Yeah I wasn't made for secrets like these
Chinese whispers, memories

Nothing is done without effect
There's nothing done that won't reflect
If I pull one brick from an endless wall
Would it drown us all?

also a 10 from me
I quite like BO, that's why I don't encourage the use of deodorant, but her voice is like a rasp on my brain tissue on this.
I love Beth Orton's music, generally, but "Chinese whispers" is a problematic phrase.
Sade wanna be
Love this!
Beth! Forgive me! 8 --> 9

Keep hearing Sade's Smooth Operator

And I strongly disagree with the notion that Beth Orton is an inferior vocalist.  While their styles are markedly different, I find them both sublimely excellent.

Curiously enough, the Everything But the Girl mix CD "Back to Mine" features a Beth Orton song.  So they clearly think well of Beth's voice.

Absolutely agree. I have all of Orton's and EBTG's albums and they are divine separately and in collaboration. Beth Orton is PERFECT driving music in the desert BTW.

Many years later, but you are indeed correct!
I really like Beth, but this is probably my least favorite...at least today.

Thanks for bringing up that Bloodrock song, Cynaera. Know that you are still missed around here in 2020.

I first heard DOA when I was 15 years old, riding in the cargo area of my parents' station wagon (normal in 1971), returning from a small-college basketball game in the gloom and rain. Not sure why my parents let it play; probably busy driving/chatting/discussing something else.

The song is incredibly intense and incredibly graphic, describing the aftermath of an airplane crash from the vantage point of a severely wounded passenger.

Needless to say, those images immediately seared into my brain. Heard it on my rock radio station (WBBQ, Augusta) a few more times before local citizens demanded it be banned. I bought the album based on that song, however, and have never regretted it.

It's not a horrible song -- it just describes a horrific event.

Make a new, good memory to associate with the music.  I've had to do that with so many songs/albums that I'd immediately associate with a bad time in my life.  I resolved to do something fun, happy, beneficial, life-giving, and associate one of those negative-image songs to it.  Sort of giving it a new life.  Then, I focused on the new memory, not the old one. (The one song I haven't been able to associate with a good memory is "D.O.A." by Bloodrock.  And at this point, why even try?  It was a horrible song then, and it's still horrible now. {#Lol} )

Great positive attitude inspired me tonight with Beth's beautiful vocals... Thank you universe
Beth Orton is cool. Recorded a CD in Portland, OREGON. Such a distinctive voice.
This is a fantastic CD. Great writing, great singing.

Crazy. I first heard 'Stolen Car' from this album on RP back around 2005 and found/purchased the CD from the now-defunct BMG music. I was shocked they had it.

It has a nice texture to it. It's all about the texture.

Thankfully!

(As in, "Sade is nowhere close.")

I think this album will always be about memories!! {#Sunny}

I have such bittersweet memories of this album, because I bought it when my then-husband was so sick with West Nile that he was on a ventilator for 2 weeks, and I listened to this album prolly 20 times then, so it immediately brings back the memory of the hospital.

Nice track. The strings and the horns add such a wonderful ambience. I'd give this an 8. Though I've known about Beth for years, I've yet to buy an album. What is wrong with me?

Some things cannot be explained. Either you get it or you don't. It's obvious you don't.

this is the best I've heard from Beth Orton so far. the ha - ha enunciation seems to have been toned down a bit. good.

I love Beth, love her style, her sound, her voice.... but PLEASE won't someone tell her that the letter "h" does NOT appear in every other word in the English language and therefore does NOT need to be pronounced ~constantly~? I have her cd and I want so much to get all the way through it, but after one or two songs she drives me so crazy with her hhh-sound obsession that I have to turn it off.
Hhhhhhhuh..?
Ya know at times those backround "strings" sound like they would be better suited for a "Dukes of Hazzard take a Love Boat Cruise" to find buried treasure on Fantasy Is... ok you get it.. Beth Orton? I don't.

:headshake: Thanks to RP, I'm a confirmed Beth Orton fan, but I must admit I don't like this slower version "anywhere" near as much as the Two Lone Swordsmen remix used for the video I found on her Rolling Stone website

To each their own. This is my favorite track off of the album. It just nice to hear more of her on RP.

There are few artists I have spent more time trying to like but I think I have finally decided that her style just conflicts with mine. I really don\'t mind hearing her but I\'ll just move on...

Disappointingly conventional for Beth. I hope this isn\'t indicitive of where she is going.
