You people are really fucked up.  Why did you bother with listening to Old and in the Way?  You don't like bluegrass obviously- everybody just goes on and on about covers- who gives a fuck if it's a cover or not? Have fun making your little lists rating cover versions vs. original versions -  I'm going to listen to Old and in the Way, the legendary supergroup of bluegrass- if I can find a play button...
Awesome ! Another great version is done by the Flying Burrito Brothers.

Make that the wacky cover set that has something to do with horses.

Wow! Haven't heard this for a long time... Last time may have been live at Mishawaka, Colorado; a tiny little dive bar in the Poudre River Canyon. ahh, memories...
Bill, where on earth did you did this up? Good on ya!

Buckwheat Zydeco/Beast of Burden into this? Brilliant!
I agree. Don't know if it was the sequence, the song, or just the mood, but I had to (after much consternation) bump this one up to the rarely earned 10.

What are you guys talking about? better what the original? Please give me a break...They may be great mucicians but they really screwed it up...
Phooey, anything is better than the Stones' performances, they're just an overrated garage band. They write GREAT stuff!! But every time I hear a Stones cover, it's better than the original.
This Hee Haw version of Wild Horses is Old and In The Way!! bluegrass... But Jerry's contribution=OK
Buckwheat Zydeco/Beast of Burden into this? Brilliant!

yes , but I don't destroy music publicly...Spanish is my mother language, so excuse my poor English
boy talk about divided camps!!! Relax dudes, it's music. And I think it's interesting to hear OAITW interpret an icon like this in a completely different way. The tempo is not that much faster. It's sort of campfire-y this way. That is, if you've got friends who can pick this good!
Love these guys-still upset after all these years-had tickets to see them but NO ride. Still have the tickets.
Yesss thank you... screwed up version... :footinmouth: masterhead wrote:

Yeah gotta love bluegrass or Old And In the Way to appreciate this perhaps... but I think it is SWEET!! I love Jerry and Grisman singing together!!! And you cannot deny the musicality of these too or anyone in this group, even if you don't like it....
You have to give Jerry some credit for being willing to play in a band where he was the third best instrumentalist. Don't get me wrong, he was a brilliant guitar player but he's playing banjo here and is good but not great. On the other hand Grissman on mandalin and Clements on fiddle were (and are) two of the greatest player ever on their instruments. It's too bad that Old and in the Way only played together for such a sort time, they had a great sound.
God this is perfection.
Wow, talk about a nation divided! "Love it" and "Hate it" seem to be the only two sentiments here. I still think it's a great cover and, as one person put it, with greater exposure of the layers than even the Stones did. That said, it's not the '8' it used to be...down to a '6'. (and yes, the Sundays' cover rules)
there's just something about how often i've heard this song that makes me dislike it, also, it seems like everyone and their dog has covered it. cliche. :(
I like the Sunday's version of this one too, but this is also a great cover of a great song!
I think "Lost" by Old and In the Way would be a great addition to the playlist. I think it's a better piece than this one.
Love the diversity on RP . . . but I can't get on board with this . . . just too sharp of a juxtaposition with the Stones' version, I guess (but I'll reserve ultimate judgment, because this probably is much better musicanship).
Man...brings back some memories. I got this album in 1975.
I, for one, seriously dig this cover. love the translation to bluegrass. seems just about perfect to me. let's hear some more from Old & In the Way. or even just more from Vassar. beautiful stuff.
Sacrilege
The Stones don't capture many of the layers of their awesome song. O & I miss some layers too, but they help complete the picture. Neat cover - a real contribution.
This is an awesome song. I've felt some frustration that the Stones don't capture many of the layers. O & I miss some layers too, but they help complete the picture. Neat cover - a real contribution.

very cool version. although I also think the Sundays cover is by far the winner for 'Wild Horses'--

I echo those sentiments!
I love Grisman and Garcia, I love the banjo, and I love this song. But this performance does nothing for me. :(
This is the worst version of this song that I've ever heard. I enjoy bluegrass music in and of itself, but the tempo and banjo are at odds with meaning of the lyrics. They could have stuck with the mandolin and slowed it down a bit and done much better. Blech! :verymad: <-X
3 cheers for including this in the playlist Bill. This is a great version of Wild Horses, and a great album.
I have to admit that this is not one of my favorite renditions of this song. Old and In the Way was a great bluegrass band (David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, John Kahn, Vassar Clements, and Peter Rowan). A lot of their other material is better. How about a nice Midnight Moonlight?
this makes me just want to cry, i don't mind bluegrass, but i really love the original (one of my few 10's) and i wish to god these guys had never found out about its existence
Friggin amazing! Love this rendition! Thanks Bill
Uh, no. Much rather hear the Stones original... or the cover by The Sundays... or I have a live version by Bush that is really good... but not this.

Hey, can I get your dealer's number?
OMG this has to be a joke!!!! I laughed out loud when I heard this!!! Sheesh....
What a great lineup in this band. David Grisman, in addition to being one of Jerry's earliest cohorts, is truly a phenomonal mandolin player. He is certainly a pioneer in the fusion of bluegrass, folk, and jazz (swing in particular). Definitely an artist worth investigating.
Even better than the original. Thanks, RP!

A very good tune off a super album - one of my favorites during my college years. Dave Grisman and Vassar Clements were in 'Old and in the Way' along with Jerry. There were two others - Dave Kahn and Peter Rowan as well. An even better song from the album is "Land of the Navajo" - a wonderful and haunting ballad. - Riff

Actually the Stones wrote it and others have covered it. The Stones did several country blues numbers, their most successful was probably Honky Tonk Women.

Jagger abnd Richards are the songwriters of record, but there's an old rumor floating around that it was actually written by the Flying Burrito Brothers. Parsons has always claimed Jagger and Richards were the authors.
HOOOCHA! this is a great version, more bluegrass please
Like the band\'s name... but not this cover of a great song. This song may have originated from a country influence, but their version doesn\'t inspire me at all.

Keith Richards is rolling in his grave....oh, wait. This is awful, but so was the Dead.
I like the Sunday\'s version of this cover
Old and In The Way You are absolutely correct. This was one of those side projects that Jerry participated in. This is a great album.

You just can\'t beat The Sundays cover of this tune.
Gotta like that band name
