One of the best rock stage shows I ever saw was The Verve 'reunion' at Coachella, IIRC 2008-ish... Their musicianship was outstanding, fine tone and great sound. People in the crowd were standing there with tears rolling down their faces, this Bear included. They did 'Lucky Man' and it was so deep and sweet... Quite the band.
Absolutely love this song. Repetitive at the end but the intro and first 3 minutes or so is fantastic.

Personally I prefer Greg Lake's (of ELP fame/infamy) Lucky Man to The Verve, who to my jaded ears have rather lost the vervaciousness (is that a word?) they used to have. 4 from the Nottingham jury.

How weird. I was just thinking of this song yesterday and dreaded digging up the CD from my overstuffed basement. Haven't heard it in over a decade.
I was in the kitchen listening to this song and it just drew me in to the living room to give it a 9 and kick it up a few notches on the volume.

for some reason I don't like this song - the more I hear it the more I understand it is the vocals... don't like the sound of voice of the singer, it is really annoying.

The "reunion" at Coachella '08 was one of the better rock concerts I ever heard. The Verve's players had matured and broadened therir sensibility far beyond the relatively canned-sounding, highly processed studio stuff, They were very well received.

I agree however that even the (relatively speaking) "weaker" Urban Hymns is still a ten/ten.

this one and "This Time" are my favs on this album. i have a ton of their cds as well as ashcroft's releases. i just loved this time period of music. it opened my eyes to a lot and i know i'm sentimental about it because of what was happening in my life personally...music really can take you vividly back in time.
