Edna Million in a drop dead suit
Dutch Pink on a downtown train
Two-dollar pistol but the gun won't shoot
I'm in the corner on the pouring rain
Sixteen men on a dead man's chest
And I've been drinking from a broken cup
Two pairs of pants and a mohair vest
I'm full of bourbon, I can't stand up

Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone

Schiffer broke a bottle on Morgan's head
And I'm stepping on the devil's tail
Across the stripes of a full moon's head
And through the bars of a Cuban jail
Bloody fingers on a purple knife
Flamingo drinking from a cocktail glass
I'm on the lawn with someone else's wife
Admire the view from up on top of the mast

Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, your children are alone

I said hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, your children are alone

Yellow sheets on a Hong Kong bed
Stazybo horn and a Slingerland ride
"To the carnival" is what she said
A hundred dollars makes it dark inside
Edna Million in a drop dead suit
Dutch Pink on a downtown train
Two-dollar pistol but the gun won't shoot
I'm in the corner on the pouring rain

Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone

Wow talk about mixing the highs and lows. I am sure this is fun, but doesn't sit with the preceding songs... zzzzz
It'll probably be the Grateful Dead next and I'll just listen to Milli Vanilli instead, to hear something 'more original'

Sorry guys, but Tom Waits' version is unbeatable. After listening to that, any version, including this one, is just bland. Like drinking a really good malt whiskey and then being served "whiskey and soda".

I also much prefer Tom's version but this is pretty good, plus we're not listening to it right after listening to the Waits version.

Used to really like all their stuff. After Ghomeshi it just leaves a bitter taste.
Tom is the man

Joe Bonamassa did an outstanding acoustic version of this tune at the Vienna Opera House.

Moxy member is an abusively sleaze-ey criminal, and their music stinks:

I am in the unfortunate position of liking a lot of their stuff, but it is sure a lot harder to listen to now than it once was. G's behaviour obviously did not start at Q given the revelation in the recently released old video about how he felt about MFs fans. How do you hit the "unlike" button in your brain. I guess it is best that it just is not played anymore.
Fuck these pieces of shit.

Interesting background to recent scandal. I wonder if  Gian G. behaved himself with his band? I had forgotten about Moxy Fruvous, so thanks RP for popping this song into the playlist.  Also, apd, if every band with an accused, abusing, criminal or deranged member were to remain unheard....well the airwaves would be pretty boring and maybe the DJs would even have nothing to play :)

OMG, I had no idea. That makes him even MOAR awesome.

I'm REALLY appreciating the morning mix.  Haven't heard this stuff ever or in a while.

I kinda like this.....
Their album Bargainville is an unknown gem. Buy it.
justin bieber covering a Metalica song would have as much soul. Tom's song (love the spandex comment too {#Cheers} )

Yep. This is fun! {#Dancingbanana}
If a song is truly great it should stand up to any cover attempt. Case in point.
This rendition is FUN!  I think it would fit in with "Dead Man's Party," "Hell," and whatever Bare Naked Ladies felt like contributing.

More Moxy, please!

No. Just no. Once performed, any song is open to covering. This cover extends and adds to the Waits' song, and is a whole lot more tuneful than ol' gravel voice, whose singing is an acquired taste, to put it mildly. Waits' street poetry is exceptional, though.

Still the best song title EVER!

Sounds like a good HBO movie.........
Like Dylan, it's difficult to cover Waits without sounding "off". However, their lyrical brilliance shines through, and this is no exception.

This is about 10% as good without Tom Waits' growly voice... something about Waits' voice and lyrics that go together like bourbon and beer.

I tried to get more added. MF is a tough sell. King of Spain is in the library. along with a couple of others.

I always thought the reference was to a "lady bug" rather than a "little bird."  Was that just my family?

Some of Tom Waits' songs work well as covers, but this one requires his gravel. These guys are too slick and self-consciously cool sounding. Painful.
ah, fruvous. just what i needed on a friday.

You're gonna have to explain that one to us.  Clear Channel decided the way this song was arranged or recorded?

It's obvious you don't know anything about the radio and music industry or certainly Moxy Fruvous, and what they stood for and represent.

Lacks the grit and soul of the original, but at least you can understand all the lyrics now.
There actually might be a Tom Waits song out there I like, because I really enjoy this.
I really like Moxy Fruvous but this is soooo flaccid. Makes me think of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy or something - trying so hard to be funky but falling so very very short.
you shouldn't try to cover waits if you have not been killed, gone to hell and come back to tell the story ...
Their live version is way better, but always happy to hear Moxy Fruvous on RP
Had to get out the Tom Waits CD and play the original to clear my palate. Much better now.
More Fruvous!!!

Indeed, my friend, indeed Although... whereas other Waits copies are a punible crime this time I would leave it with a light fine
its such a great song - impossible to improve on Tom Waits version - this one is a little too cheery for the desperation the lyrics call out. things like that happen when a song starts to become a standard.

Great job by Moxy but I like their live version even better - it has more energy. The live version hasn't made it off my iPod since I did the download. Hard to listen to the slower pace of this one, but still nice.
I agree. There are better Moxy Fruvous songs out there. I love these guys. I use to make dinner for them when they played in Winnipeg at the West End Cultural Centre.
Love the name of the song! What a mental image!!!
I'm echoing the masses here - way to upbeat for the song content and origins 2
this sounds more like Jockey Full of Light Beer
I'm sorry but only Tom should sing this song, its a classic. love the song hate the version.
I do not think they perform anymore. I enjoyed seeing them in the 90's, but have not seen many updates from their website and heard they had phoned it in.

I don't think I ever went to see a band hoping for some soul-searching instrospection. It did happen though one time with some crummy 'cid.
TOM WAITS' VERSION IS SO MUCH BETTER...
Moxy Fruvous? Wasn't that one of those characters in those interminable George Lucas Star Wars movies?
Somehow this guy sounds too nice to be singing those lyrics. Not convincing.
Barenaked Ladies with some talent and personality.

Did anyone ever see the Red Elvises?

Being so dead set against covers on general principle, what do I do when this version obviously has the zip those wonderful Tom Waits lyrics demand?
Well, that's what makes this a great cover. Now, I'll seldom rate a cover higher than "6" on RP, but this one--an inspired matching of artist to original--gets a "7" from me. For precisely the reason you mention.
Hooray for Fruvous! :propeller.gif:

Tune sounds an awful lot like The Squirrel Nut Zippers, "Hell"... (Which I'm sure they borrowed as well!) Very catchy, nonetheless!
probably not, since this song was originally recorded by Tom Waits in 1985, and I doubt the Zippers were even out of middle-school then... Let's hear La-Z Boy!
Right up my alley! A good segue would be with Doors' "The Mosquito".

I like it!
No disrespect to Tom but I love the Moxy version of this song. The harmony adds something. This is my first time hearing the studio version, the Live Noise version is even better. Also on live noise, an a capella version of "Gotta Get a Message to You" by the Bee Gees which is absolutely beautiful, and their version of Psycho Killer, which again puts harmony where you don't think it belongs, but it works.
I love Tom's version, but this cover is a lot of fun.

Sometimes a cover is so different from the original that it has to be judged independently(ex.: With A Little Help From My Friends, Higher Ground or Got To get You Into My Life) ...and I love this one! timandjuliet wrote:

If you really want to find out, pick up "Live Noise". Definitely a band that's best live. The studio always seems to pull the life out of them.
