They say everything can be replaced
Yet every distance is not near
So I remember every face
Of every man that put me here

I see my light come shinin'
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

They say every man needs protection
They say that every man must fall
But I swear I see my reflection
Somewhere so high above this wall

I see my light come shinin'
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

Standing next to me in this lonely crowd
Is a man who swears he's not to blame
Every night, I hear him shout so loud
Crying out that he's been framed

I see my light come shinin'
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

I see my light come shinin'
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

I found myself quite by chance sharing a small sailboat with her in the Charles River, at some regatta open house, many years ago. She was not happy to be in a sail boat, asking the skipper where the motor was. I didn't even realize  it was her until my companion asked her how long she was going to be in Boston. I had to ask later why she had asked her that, and was reprimanded - "That was Chrissie Hynde!" And me sitting there like an idiot with my camera around my neck. I wished I'd'a took a picture, and braved her telling me to fuck off. Whould'a been sweet.

She may have thrown you off the boat for taking her picture. I saw the Pretenders a few years ago and she was so anti-photo that she stopped in the middle of a song and called a guy out for taking one.
I can't listen to Chrissie Hynde sing cause she sounds like May West re-incarnated.
just lovely

its a lovely song
This 30th anniversary album is now 30 years old. Wow.

She was on a sailboat and asked the skipper where the motor was?
Not sure, but I guess that this attitude gives an idea about a person's character.
Unless she was kidding...

Nina Simone. NINA SIMONE.

See...Chrissie thinks Bob is the Best
I could still recall watching the concert on TV and this wonderful performance.
Some things have endured, at least for 28 yrs.

This one REALLY needs to be retired. I am just so sick of hearing it... There are times when I think RP needs to clear out some of the lingering bilge from its playlist, and I would put this at the top of the list. C'mon! There are lots of other pieces of music that we should hear other than this. How about the Band's recording of this, for example?

And 15 years later...it's still here...lol...

But to the point...I do wish that some of the elder statesmen of music could get nudged aside a bit more often to introduce some lesser played stuff.  In spite of RP's fairly broad selection of music, it remains rather shallow some days...there's some tracks that you are almost guaranteed to hear every few days...some days, I'd prefer to get a couple of hours of new stuff...maybe it's just me, but I'd love new spin Sundays or some such thing...
Do you know who would have rocked that song out of the studio or stadium ? Those back up gospel singers who were positioned 15 feet away. A darn shame.
OMG.  Chrissie is 70?  I still think of her as a cool new punk.  Remember when she came to my college and she threatened to leave the stage because too few of us were dancing.

Who can get away with even thinking about covering this? Chrissie Hynde can.
The Band does the best version of  " I shall Be Released ". You can see it in the documentary, Festival Express. Great !!
6->7
Glorious tones from a superb talent, each one !!
Dynamite. One of the best voices in rock.

I fondly recall meeting her. She was down to earth. Bob D's "do what you must" is like what she was.  It's hard to explain. I'd have to divulge far more than I'm allowed in order to 'splain this cray shit.  Take my word, life is not what you assume. You're likely not smart enough to get it, so I'll  find another  way.

Me thinks that Chrissie Hynde's voice works really, really well with this iconic song.
Class......pure class

lol at this comment made without a trace of irony on a Bob Dylan song.
A great star. She does this Dylan number justice.

Right?  And especially when doing a BD cover on an album devoted to BD covers.  This one's just a bit below an 8, I'll upgrade it later when my wife tells me to....Long Live RP!!

Still a 4 - there's songs that even Chrissie Hynde can't destroy.

Terrific cover.
Please play the original instead...
Great song. Great performance.  Always good to hear Chissie Hynde’s voice.
I love her voice! Good tune anyway!
Better than the original
BTW - if you can find this concert I suggest checking out the whole show. Very excellent performances by almost all that were there, including Zimmy himself.

The last I saw it was on VHS tape years ago, don't know if it has been released on digital.

Thanks for pointing Nina's rendition out to me.
I think Joe Cocker does a really soulful take on the song at Woodstock, deserves to be heard.

...as for Mrs. Hynde, I think of her, I think 'Goddess'...
Great song, great singing, great guitar work, everthing nice!!
Hear here, thank you Bill for that, Chrissie Hynde 'quality', that got 'I shall be released' on Josh Jackson's list of 50 best Bob Dylan covers of all time.
*Great* tune

The voice of the 80s singing the song from the soul of the 60s.
Me too. I love it.
Love it!!
The Tom Robinson Band does a "Radio Paradise friendly" version of this Dylan Classic!
Give it a whirl
I been there (albeit just via live TV).

Oh, this is wonderful. I've never heard it before. Chrissie brings it home and keeps it real.
I love the original and this is a very worthy cover. Go Chrissie!      {#Jump}
There's another great version of this on The Band's The Last Waltz. Classic--and classy--tune.

Dylan, yes. Yep, great tune. Beaten to death, which is why I fling the headphones away whenever this comes on.
Richard Manuel's version can't be topped in my mind. I'm not trying to sound sexist but this song sounds better sung by a man. Know what I mean?

Its funny how so many songs that folks might call "bilge" have high rankings and numerous good comments. Perhaps that might suggest that lots of folks don't think this is bilge.
Using the "lots of folks like it" argument is dangerous and doesn't really mean much. Lots of folks like Britney Spears for example. This song is nice, but it is a pretty mediocre rendition of this song and a poor sample of Chrissy Hynde's repertoire.

Never heard this version before...it's nice. Although you can't beat The Band's version, IMHO. Richard Manuel's voice was perfect.
Great cover..great artist...always loved her music, always will...great rendition of a Bob Dylan classic
Best track on this album!

I agree...adds nothing to the original
Why call this a Dylan 'cover?' This song is 100% The Band off Music From Big Pink. Sure Dylan sang it, after giving it to them.

fisherking thinks there are two main categories of music listeners. One group only hears music and voice with no regard to lyrics. The other actually listens to the words and more importantly the intent of the artist as expressed by inflection, tone, etc. I understand the first category of people wouldn't like an artist like Dylan. They can't help it, they only have a cursory interest in music at best. Those enlightened listeners who pay attention to other aspects of music cannot help liking artists such as Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, etc. Artists who are not blessed with a purely beautiful voice, but who, because of the lyrics they write and the emotion poured into them, reach a state of beauty when all parts are taken as a whole.
there are also some of us who acknowledge folks like dylan as excellent song writers, excellent musicians, but terrible singers. there's nothing lacking in enlightenment there, sir. i don't think that someone preferring a cover of dylan makes them any less quality in terms of intellect or musical taste. some of us have sensitive ears, you see. :)

Granted it's from the Dylan 30th Anniversary disc, but who hasn't covered this tune? Eh, it usually sounds good but I'm giving this attempt a "5."
excellent, despite ending not with a bang, but a whimper.
*shrug* Given that there's not much of a song to work with here, I guess it's okay.
