''John Waite''
over the past few years, to the traditional sound of an english summer, the drone of lawnmowers, the smack of leather on willow, has been added a new noise

''Levar Burton''
what were the skies like when you were young?

''Rickie Lee Jones''
they went on forever, th-
when i-
we lived in Arizona, and the skies always had little fluffy clouds in em and, ah,
they were long and clear an
there were lots of stars
at night
and, ah, when it rained it would all turn-
it- they were beautiful
the most beautiful skies as a matter of fact
the sunsets were purple and red and yellow and on fire
and the clouds would catch the colors everywhere
that's -- it's neat
because i used to look at them all the time
when i was little
you don't see that

''Sample''
layering different sounds on top of each other

God damn this is a fine tune. I have many a mushroom memory of it in the 90’s...
LOVE IT!!  Loved it at the time and still do!!
I just learned this is Ricky Lee Jones' voice. Orb sampled it from an interview she gave.

  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Fluffy_Clouds#Samples

And some guitar is sampled from Pat Metheny... and drums are a Harry Nillsen song slowed down to 33rpm... !!
Moehahaha! Liked it. 7 from me.
thought this one got put in the recycle bin back in the day..{#No}

Kudos for the ORB on RP, but I think the orb has strong points and weak points and should be consumed in album form.   there are much better tunes from them, but this signifies that they are appreciated.

Another example is Jethro Tull, Id love RP to play Baker Street Muse in its entirety, but we end up getting "living in the past".

Indeed to your first comment.  Love what they did with David Gilmour.

Insanely annoying

I hate to admit that I kind of like this lol!

You can have all the recording technology at your fingertips but no song. Sad.
one of those tracks that invokes all sorts of memories.  :)
F@@@**** A song - thank you Bee-Obb

Wow, 1990.  Good purchase!  Where have I been??
Another version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQx-BefP9-Y
Oh yuck!!!
I am not a fan of talking during a song, anyway. This is especially annoying, due RL Jones' voice. I like her music a lot, by the way, but this sounds like some spaced out hippy (which I once might have been).
I don't like this at all. Don't rate it. Doesn't match up to the high quality I am used to on RP.

Wow, haven't heard this since the early '90s.  The girl that played this for me was adorable.

Cool, didn't know that.  I always thought they were interviewing a Native American woman.  Anyway, I have always dug this song.
Has anyone linked up this version? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIPWGAzEZlA

Ok, just to revisit...I DO live in Arizona, and in the summer, there aren't a lot of stars at night because it's usually raining or thundering anyway.

But, more importantly, the ONLY way I'd take this woman on a road trip with me is in the trunk. WOW, she's annoying. Sorry, gotta dock points out of principle.

Oh wow! Two tunes in a row from the "weird misc" folder on my pc. I never thought this one would make it to RP. Orb has a distinct 90's chillout techno flavor to them. I'm rating this one well just because it goes way back with me. Mmmmm.. I need to go fill my stylish RP mug with some green tea or something to drink with this song.
I agree with nu-GFX .. I don't think there has been a song worth listening for a few minutes! Everyone may be asleep in the USA but here in central Europe it is 14:40 on a Sunday afternoon.
OK. One of those songs that makes it hard to stay tuned to RP. There are enough Radiostations around with those techno-ish tracks. I don't get why this is on your playlist, Bill. Sorry.
this one rates about a 9.5 on the weird-o-meter; enjoyable, nonetheless. i think i will give it a 7.........no...... make that an 8..
not my favorite Orb tune. but it's all right.
Blech! I'm disconnecting from RP now. I feel the need to switch to music I like. And I even grew up in Arizona with the fluffy clouds and the beautiful sunsets

The Max Headroom gimmick hasn't aged well, but the rhythm track is pretty dang groovy.
hey, pass that thing over here!

I just read back through the posts to see if anyone else was thinking that.. Can anyone help?
Looping. Samples. Playing samples in a loop. Sampling a loop and looping the sampled loop so you can sample it again. Little fluffy clouds! Looping. Samples. Playing samples in a loop. Sampling a loop and looping the sampled loop . . . I like the music under the babble, but the whole thing just doesn't hold together for me after about 0:45.
has anyone ever talked to Ricki Lee about having her adenoids out?
Yes, ORB. Superbly weird

I love the beats, but I find the woman's voice gets a little annoying after a while. I'd have to give the music a 9 and the voice a 5 or 6. I'll average it out to a 7
can i punch this girl talking about fluffy clouds already!
Just plain cool. I love the woman's voice.
Reminds me of My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult. Thought it was so a minute.

Someone from Portland would certainly know. ;-) Nope, no big skies here. Sorry, fresh out. The tune's pretty good, but she sounds like a road trip companion from hell.

I am looking out my window as I write this, and yes indeed, there are lots of little fluffy clouds out there. Seriously though, the sunsets are absolutely incredible. Purple, yellow, and red.

Interesting. Not exactly my cuppa, musically, and as I type it may be getting a shade repetitive. But I loved the way the intro worked, the apparently simple spoken part morphing into poetry and then lyrics. Maybe brilliant.
Ahhhh - it was a time and a place. If you weren't there, you'll probably never get it; if you were, you just wish you could remember it a little more clearly... Gotta love this station.
It seems like ages since I last heard this on RP. Bump up the rotation, please.
I am so glad RP is giving creative stuff like this a chance, as heightened broadcast exposure will provide associative benefits to like-minded newcomers and other risk-takers who are thus encouraged to experiment similarly with audio production techniques & effects to see just what kind of sound is their own. This is a good thing. Naturally, I hope to avoid another hearing of this particular experiment.

Just go away with your fluffy clouds.
I was on the LRC and saw The Orb come up, so I had to switch channels. I haven't heard these guys in ages. Most excellent.

And as I recall, didn't she sue The Orb for using it without permission? Or was that The KLF? Or are they the same band? I dunno, lots of my memories from that era are a little fuzzy...
AFAIK The Orb are: Alex Patterson and somebody The KLF was: Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty. Jimmy Cauty once collaborated with Alex Patterson. BTW KLF = Kopyright Liberation Front

Often the talking is too cute a gimmick, but I love the poetry of this monologue. I'm really digging this track. (Ironically, I don't like Rickie Lee Jones songs.)

AZ really does have little fluffy clouds and beautiful skies. but the girl saying all of this sounds quite high. reminds me of me! (pimp) :D
Those last two brain cells - apparently associated with clouds - are rubbing their tiny nuclei together in a final attempt to create a 'thought'. *** This is your brain on dope. ***
Takes me right back to the ambient house days of the early 90's. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! :)

Makes me want to go drive around in my beetle with the top down for some reason.

Thank you captain 1337!
It's not the woman's fault that her sentence was sampled and repeated about two dozen times--cut her some slack and put the lid back on that can of whoop-a$$. Fits right in with "eclectic". Not one of my faves, but I dig it okay.
I'm sure it says something about me, but I just want to slap that woman upside the head. STFU!
It just kills me when a listener doesn't like a particular song, they "threaten" to change to another stream. BFD. Do it, and just be quiet about it. The rest of us can MANAGE.
I was just thinking about this song the other day. Thanks for playing it! Made my day. :)

Dammit, I came in here to drop that fact and you beat me to it!
Oh my! That was driving me out of my mind!
It's the repetition of the same dialog over and over again that gets to me. Somewhat maddening. =P~ Otherwise, it might be a good song.
I've seen those too...
I lived in Arizona. They are the most beautiful li li li little fluffy clouds. And thanks for telling me who that was. I've always wondered. ;)
I hated them then, I still hate them now! :fever.gif: :fever.gif:

Most people don't even know what eclectic means. Most seem to think it means "weird" or "off the beaten path" or something. It means neither of those. I won't print the definition here. I'll let you look it up. But, I will tell you this. The last time I checked, eclectic did not mean horrible. So it's possible to both get the "eclectic" part of RP and to change the channel when this disaster of a song is played.
Good point, but your comment leads me to think your grip on the term is a little loose, too. ;) ___ Did this song--or part of that dialogue sample--show up in a commercial on TV? Rings a bell like that at the moment.
Granted, it's sampling ... but I can't help but want her to just finish the thought ... let alone the sentence. :)

apparently some people REALLY don't get the eclectic part here. sad to see some people just aren't willing to open up and try to understand something outside of the norm. More Orb!

Wait a minute.. you mean the part of this song they DON\'T use in the VW ad is even worse than the part they do? Ye gods...
I am going to post everytime the song is played . IT STINKS please remove.. thank you.. I change streams when I hear it ..
The single most obnoxious song in the entire universe. Please kindly remove this from the playlist and find the artist beat him over the head with his own CD. Thank you ;)
So that\'s where Arnold Communications (VW\'s ad agency) got this song! I always wondered. It\'s a close race but I think VW\'s songs out cool Mitsubishi\'s. Anyone else want to weigh in?
Best version out of 4 or 5 I have in my rather silly Orb collection :D . . . and fluffy is one of the best tracks. . . TURN IT UP!
Excellent piece!
Haven\'t heard this in a while. Me like.....:)
