She grew up with the children of the stars
In the Hollywood hills and the boulevards.
Her parents threw big parties. Everyone was there.
They hung out with folks like Dennis Hopper and Bob Seger and
Sonny and Cher.

She feels safe now in this bar on Fairfax.
And from the stage I can tell that she can't let go and she can't
Relax.
And just before she hangs her head to cry,
I sing to her a lullaby
I sing:

Everything's gonna be all right.
Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye.
Everything's gonna be all right.
Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye.

She still lives with her mom outside the city
Down that street about a half a mile.
And all her friends tell her she's so pretty
But she'd be a whole lot prettier if she smiled once in a while.
'Cause even her smile looks like a frown.
She's seen her share of devils in this angel town.

Everything's gonna be all right.
Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye.
Everything's gonna be all right.
Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye.

I told her I ain't so sure about this place.
It's hard to play a gig in this town and keep a straight face.
Seems like everybody's got a plan.
It's kind of like Nashville with a tan.

Everything's gonna be all right.
Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye.
Everything's gonna be all right.
Rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye.

Urgh. Nasty, like something that would come up as a cover on X factor.
blechh.  I don't care for overly sensitive heart-wrenching ballads about rich kids from LA's glitzy scene.
The musical equivalent of a chick flick.

It was awful then.  It's awful now.

Agree 100%
When I hear this, I want to hang my head and cry also.  Maybe it's the song.
This song is almost worthy of a comment.
McDonalds is popular too. But it is vile.

If this is instead of playing Michael Buble I can understand. Otherwise, I have to say this is horrendously bad.
Give me a break....Jesus H {#Yawn}

I get more outa this tune than the over produced orig. "nashville with a tan" never caught that before. Is that what he was going for with the cover shot?
Mute

Never been to Hollywood.  Visited Los Angeles only if layovers at LAX count.

But I've spent a lot of time in Nashville, and that one line has been very influential in forming my opinions about LA.

Wow, I haven't heard this in a really long time.

It may be controversial here. It may have been overplayed on radio... But there\'s something about the verses of this song that are so intensely evocative of LA. The comment that the lyrics are \"trite\" seems excessive. Yes, the chorus is very sincere. And broad. But the verses have a poetic specificity that makes it all worth while. I\'m so glad that it still turns up on RP.
If this were really a self-parody, I'd rate it higher than "1 - SUCKO BARFO." Others have sentimental attachments to this tune and that's OK. It makes me wish there was a puking emoticon.
after that \"because, even her smile looks like a frown\" line, i\'m expecting something to the effect of \"turning that frown upside-down.\" crappy song. really trite and boring.

Nah. I think it's lower than that. Maybe we need to hear some of Yawn Mullin's other songs?
\'kinda like Nashville..with a tan\' Probaly have to be from Nashville to appreciate that line...it\'s priceless
Rockaby, yeah!!!! poopy pants song.
I always liked this song, no matter how everyone else tends to be so down on it. Besides, it makes me miss LA. I\'ve only heard one other song by him. could you play others from time to time?

And the set has just been played again. Don't agree with the first three songs, but hey, if everyone likes it, why mess with a good thing?

You answered your own question. Most people are probably here because they can't stand the Top-40s. Some people have a borderline-irrational hatred of anything that started there, and make biased judgments about the skills of an artist based on how their songs were marketed. It may not be right, but it's not so hard to believe.
Wow, I sure don\'t see why others think this song (and the artist) sucks so loudly. Granted, it may not be a masterpiece, but it sure beats the pants off quite a few other songs that most of us here on RP seem to tolerate (and many seem to love). I agree that this song was overplayed by the corporate radio conglomerates, and I\'m not sure if I prefer the acoustic version over the earlier version, but still, it\'s way better than some other songs that I see my fellow RP\'ers fawn over. . . . just a couple more cents into the fray . . .

If this song represents an artist way ahead of his time, the future looks pretty bleak to me.
I see not much in the heated hatred columns lately... that\'s a good thing.. well.. from my view anyway.. as *I* like this version of the song enough that I\'d like to put an 11 on it... and I don\'t do or wish for that often! And it worked even better in the set just played... Carbon Leaf - Criara - Aaron English - Shawn Mullins - Hem ... nice ... smooth... if anything.. sets like this are when I *know* its not just some robot back there pluggin\' \'way..
I wish you would play \'Twin Rocks, Oregon\' off of Soul\'s Core, that is such a RP choice! (pimp) (pimp)
I fear I must add my voice to the \"bleah\" chorus. This is better than the non-acoustic version, but this is setting the bar very very very very very very very very very low. Very.

A great version of this song.

LOL !!! I really should check back more often on songs that have this kind of love / hate communal chat about them.. ... nasal plucking ... wow.. and I thought I *hated* michael stipe's singing ... I'd have to say it might be a tie... although after the pluckin' stipe would still be singing somewhere... so it might not make it worth while.. :D

I gotta agree. This guy sucks ass. Reminds me of that Saturday Night Live skit where the guy is singing so passionately about chopping vegetables.

Actually he did a steal a lollipop from me once... I initially resented this song because it got so much exposure (again-- a reason to avoid FM) but I finally gave in a decided that it is a good song on merit. Not all that inventive, but enjoyable.
I agree with Euphemism. I really, really can\'t stand this song or, really, any of the songs I\'ve heard from Mr. Mullins.

Ugh. Rock-a-buh-bye, Shawn.

Makes me wonder what Nicholson's singing(?) sounds like!
I like this song, its the first time i\'ve heard it or Shawn Mullins.
Very cool version of the song... I, unlike some, didn't get bombarded by the popular stations that over-played his album release version.. so that's probably why I still like it ... and this acoustic version even more...!!... :)
I like this version much better.
Lullaby puts me to sleep in the worst meaning of the phrase.

not quite as horrid as the album version, close, but slightly more tolerable.
