When you dance
Do your senses tingle and take a chance
In a trance
While the lonely mingle with circumstance

I've got something to tell you, you make it show
Let me come over, I know you know
When you dance, ooh, I can really love

I can love
I can really love, I can really love
I can love
I can really love, I can really love

Like a mountain that's growing, a river that rolls
Let me come over, I know you know
When you dance, ooh, I can really love

When you dance
Do your senses tingle and take a chance
In a trance
While the lonely mingle with circumstance

I've got something to tell you, you make it show
Let me come over, I know you know
When you dance, ooh, I can really love

I read Nei's autobiography the other week. For such a fine songwriter he is the polar opposite as a writer. However, it did contain loads of small snippits of info about where he came from and some of his influences.

I'd recommend NOT to read it though as previously I had him pegged as an icon in my eyes and having never met him I thought he was deeper and a more wonderful a human being than he actually is.

But hey. . . the music is still there and it still resonates with me so no harm done really.

I am not sure how helpful that is...but i gotta admit it is a very funny metaphor.
Still listening after all these years automatically makes this a 10.
Neil Young never gets OLD to me !
have never been able to join this band wagon....

Neil Young began his career as "a folk singer, keepin' managers alive."  Ahmet Erdegun put him, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay together to make the should-have-been-a-supergroup Buffalo Springfield in 1966.  They released "For What It's Worth", a song that still gets lots of airplay here and elsewhere more than 45 years later.  The band's popular songs were by Stills, but Young really could swing his axe, arguably even better than Stills.  With 3 terrific vocalist/songwriters, two of whom were seriously talented guitarists, their 3 albums had any number of dynamite songs, not the least of which was Young's "Mr. Soul".  The band split primarily because of NY's star turn and the fact that Furay was on his way to becoming a preacher (he has a hip church -  oxymoron? - in Colorado, Boulder I think).

Young went solo, first with a "Why-I-left-those-zeroes" disc, eponymously titled, then the truly immortal "Neil Young with Crazy Horse".  That's still his best for my money.  It's one of the all-time studly rockers.  Go buy it if you don't have it.  It's not even a little dated, in spite of being 40.  He's known for great tunes with awesome guitar riffs and insipid lyrics.  His discography must be enormous, but went waaaay downhill after "Harvest" in 1973 (?).  Is that a start?

Neil is King!
doesn't suck as much as some of them...
Love this song from waaaaay back, and I'm not embarrassed about it in the least.  It makes sense: "When you dance, I can really love."  Why, of course!!

I love this song.

Love this, thanks.

Leave it to Neil to bring a great set to a halt.

Where do you start with this guy? He keeps shifting and changing what he wants to do - YES! he has slowed in recent years, but my goodness what a collection of music and the styles are so incredibly varied.

I saw him at his Bridge School Benefit - in Mountain View last year - simply amazing and so incredibly diverse...

I remember our walk back from the concert we all started asking ourselves, "Will the stars of today last as long?" Will we see the Jay-Z's and the Kanye Wests still make amazing music into their 60's

Who is current now that you can see still pumping out amazing music at an elderly age?
Beck? Pearl Jam?

When I lived in Monterey, we would drive up to Watsonville to buy fresh Brussels sprouts and artichokes straight from the farm, listening to Neil Young cranked up loud in the car both ways. {#Good-vibes}

Adored this timeless LP in it's time.
A great song from one of the greatest albums by one of the all-time great artists.

Thanks, Bill!
One of my favorite albums, thanks Bill!

A very underrated song in the Neil canon. Superb tune.
I have been listening to NY since his Buffalo Springfield days. Try as I might there is no artist where I can say that there stuff has been consitently thta good over 4 (four!!) decades,

I'm a big Neil fan and of coarse like this song. But...I am curious if anyone has comments about the current Greendale tour. Greendale was fine but I was really disappointed with the overall playlist. If you are going to charge premium prices for tickets ($78 bucks a piece), would it kill ya to play a few more favs and less endless "weld" jams. Moderation is not a bad thing. I have enjoyed his career and embrace his experimentations. But how about a little "give us what we came to see"!
Agreed, i grew up on "early" NY and much prefer this album and Harvest, Everybody Knows.... when he went to 'rust' etc. there was a period that some like to call 'progressive' but really was an endless uninspired jam. While I still love "Tonight's the Night", appreciated Zuma, and some other bits and pieces, Neil's body of work has yielded some genius, some clunkers. But as with many artists, his early work is his best...but in concert, yes, he needs to give us what we paid to hear, not his latest experiment!
Does he mean she's such a bad dancer that it makes him lose his libido?....
Okay, I have stated many, many times how I dislike this man's music. But this song is a true rocker! And I love it. Solid 8 for me (maybe more but it's late and my judgement is impaired). Hey, it's okay! I'm home and I ain't getting in the car for several hours.

Hoping for someone to sing to me: "When you dance I can really love ..." He'll just have to get me pretty drunk first.
play this every day!

I like Neil Young but the irony of this song is, like most of Neil Young's music, its not really danceable unless you're doing like a Grateful Dead-style dance.

I am with you. This is it.
I used to play this LP and Journey Through the Past just before going to bed when I was roughly 15 or 16 years of age. I was always felt a little embarrassed. There was a rough, crude edge to it. Neil's vocals sucked. But I still loved it. Imagine how I felt 30 years later when it turned out that Neil Young was the father of the Grunge movement and great bands like Pearl Jam. Vindicated.

From a girl in an unbelievable string bikini on a beach in LA: "Taste is what you like".

I felt that way for years, but Dylan kinda crept up on me, and now I see the genius of them both.

By his own admission, Neil can't sing a lick, but he has a great time anyway. rubenbeagle wrote:

I prefer my Brussels sprouts raw. I prefer my Neil Young in CSNY and not much elsewhere...not disliked enough to mute (very few tunes Bill plays will cause that) but I am not a fan.

First heard this when I was 10 or something. My brother had brought it home from a class trip out west and I remember making fun of Neil's high voice. Since then I've learned to play approx 200 Neil tunes. Most prolific.

Classic Neil Young. This was head banger before there was head banger. Neil Young is like a train wreck. You just can\'t look away. How he pulls it off I will never understand, but I love his stuff. And for the front cover of GQ, how about Neil, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.
