It was late one night on a Kentucky highway, up ahead on the horizon,
It was there before my eyes, I saw the glowin' cross of Jesus Christ.
I saw Jesus on the grille, of a south-bound Peterbilt,
Catchin' bugs between his teeth, and glowin' for everyone to see.
He don't stop at those toll-booths, the state troopers let him roll on thru,
Folks stop and stare at his long flowing hair, and his gold-capped tooth.
I saw Jesus on the Grille, rolling down the Interstate,
And I know we won't be late no darling, with the potentate of hauling freight,

Talkin' Jesus, riding on the Grille, Talkin' Jesus blessing every road-kill.
Talkin' Jesus giving points for good behavior,
I've been redeemed by the 75 mph savior, tell it mommy now.

I saw him down at a roadside diner, with a soybean burger and a side of fries,
A big ol' glass of chocolate milk, and a slice of apple pie.

I saw Jesus, riding on the grille, I saw Jesus blessing every road-kill,
I saw Jesus giving points for good behavior,
We've been redeemed by the 75 mph savior, tell it baby now, yeah.

I saw Jesus on the grille, rollin' thru the cold Kentucky night,
And I know we won't be late no darling, he's the potentate of hauling freight.
He's the potentate of hauling freight, you know with Jesus we won't be late.
Man, where's Moses?

Nice woofer on the album cover :o)

That dog starts moving if you stare at the image long enough.
Usually when I hear "Jesus" in songs, I press skip or PSD. Such a cheap way to get attention of the masses and a higher meaning of otherwise utterly mediocre songs.
Thank you DJ! Thank you Willy Porter that was a gas  : )
Happy Holidays!
Average of 5.9.. really. Can I give it 35 to push it up to 7.5?
some mighty fine slide guitar here
thanx 4 my morning smile Bill
I've never heard this.  Makes me think of being hauled through N IN major snow storm blizzards to swim meets and singing "I don't care if it rains snows or freezes, long as I got my plastic Jesus, sitting on the dashboard of my car." <Catholic mom drivers>
Love it! I saw Willie open for Tori Amos circa 1997. He put on a better show than she did...

Speaking of big J, It would make my day if you guys could add Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon's Are you drinking with me Jesus... to your heavenly repetoire... Total feel-good tune (if you're not overly religious and find that stuff offending...)

Over and out!
75 mph savior blessin' them road-kills  : )
Man, that bass player sounds like he is having a damn fine time!
Grilled Jesus? Sacrilicious!!
YES.....take it away....gooood foot tapping music for the soul!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice one Doc!

You gotta love dog's noses.  They are there for the squeezing.

If you ever have a chance to see the Willy Porter with his band, go to the show.  The musicianship is A1, and they improvise on tunes for 15 minutes in a magical groove.  'Available Light' is an excellent CD.

C'mon Rex, stop playing with your food and eat the damn wiener already!!

"on the grille" as in Working the grille, like at Waffle House? Or maybe seen "on the grille" like the Jesus that was seen on the french toast and sold on Ebay? Just some options...

Sheesh.. like Jesus would be working in a Waffle house...  {#Nyah}
I saw this guy one time when he opened up for Tori Amos (strange combo)
Dogs make great subjects for album covers.
Hmmmm..... he's moved from the dashboard to the grille? Hope it's not one o' them Texas cars. You know...the ones with the horns mounted on them?

(You'd think he would've been more comfortable on the dashboard!)
Six for the song, eight for the dog on the cover...

I thought I was the only person with this album. Saw Willy Porter open for Tori Amos in 1996 or thereabouts. He's pretty handy with a guitar.
Ditto! He wrote this song about a stretch of highway near my house!

Bill, you REALLY have to follow this with Waits's "Chocolate Jesus"
Actually, a more appropriate seque might be Silver Naked Ladies from Westerberg's 14 songs.

If I laugh out loud, do I go straight to hell??
I love this song - I've seen Willy several times and have met him once. What a fabulous guy!
I LOVE this song! Gotta get my own copy. BTW, that chai comment below makes me sound like a total jerk, doesn't it? Sigh.
We're all going to hell after listening to that one. Absolutely fantastic!

This would get a 9 for the cover art even if the song wasn't great. Which it is. "Man, where's Moses?" I nearly spit chai all over my keyboard.
Cool ... two Milwaukee bands in the same set (Willy Porter and Violent Femmes).

"we have been redeemed by the 75 mph savior" has to be the best lyric i've heard all day.

Hey, I come to hear the album covers!
This reminds me of Ben Harper for some reason. With maybe a twist of the Spin Doctors.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! That's freakin' hilarious and macabre at the same time.
Thanks for the wide variety and introducing me to Willie
thank the lord he doesn't say god damn.
so let me get this straight? Jesus is on the grille, sheep go to heaven, and goats go to hell? goddamn right, it's a beautiful day.
First listen to this guy. Fantastic music! Does remind me of Little Feat a bit. Play on!

I completely agree, every time this CD comes up in rotation in the jukebox I take it off shuffle and let it finish, it's just fantastic all the way through.
Add one more Willy Porter fan's utter adoration for this album. Saw him live at the Barrymore here in Madison lo those many years ago. That guy knows how to work a crowd.
I have this CD and love the song... but this is some kinda remix of the CD version, ¿no? I've never heard that intro, and other things are sticking out too... anyone?

A three song set of "cuss'in." Genius.
Saw him open for Eric Johnson earlier this year, good musician but didn't do much for me. If I want humor I'll go to a comedy club. I came to see music.
Jesus on the grill, with some barbecue sauce, and fries on the side. Yum! (Jesus - the other white meat!)
Catchy!
Just saw Willy again in concert. This time he was with Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre. Talk about oil and water. Willy would do his usual beautiful rhythmic guitar work and Barre and his washed up boys would get up there and hammer out some Satriani-esque riffs. Quite strange and I hope Willy leaves Barre behind next tour.........
Grilled cheese?

Great - a Milwaukee boy!!!!!!! He is an awesome musician, that doesn't quite show through on this tune, but his guitar work is outstanding.
ditto. i've seen willy many times, all in small clubs and bars.. so much fun and has a die-hard following! how 'bout a little 'watercolor sunrise' bill?

And follow THAT with Paul Thorne's "800 Pound Jesus" - What a great set that would be!

..loving it!..

I'm thinking this is not really too religious....... it's more about cooking, and eating meat, and not raw vegtables.....
Hey, scroll down and read the lyrics--the grille is on the front of a Peterbuilt. Whimsy with a capital "W". Better still, with a random letter capitalized: perfectly whimsical. Or perhaps none at all, which introduces the possibility of the oft-dreaded ALL CAPS ONLINE SHOUTING... BIFF!!! ITS ME ZIPPY. JESUS ROCKS D00D!!!!

a great late summer song from my neighbor ( I see him in our local coffee shop from time to time..........)

Bill- Are you getting ready for Easter?
Ya gotta love that 75 mile an hour saviour line....
Bill, you REALLY have to follow this with Waits\'s \"Chocolate Jesus\" fun stuff :D
And now for something completely different...
It\'s not a religious song -- more a whimsical invention. The rest of this album (Dog Eared Dream) is absolutely outstanding as well -- not one bad track from start to finish.
Music to rebuild an engine to! :)
Definately has that \'New\' Little Feat sound to it !
