And I knew I was close to you
And I will
Catch me flying in the sun
Catch me drinking of your wine

I'm gonna put something in you
Make the devil feel surprised
All your sisters wanna fly
Around my golden sky
Around my golden sky

Just because you feel, hollow inside it's real
Just because you feel, hollow inside it's real
I'm gonna put something in you
Make the devil feel surprised
Make the devil feel surprised

And I knew I was close to you
And I knew
Catch me flying in the sun
Catch me drinking of your wine

For the latter, you want "Hurt", by Johnny Cash.

Covered by Johnny Cash (Beautifully, mind you.)
"Hurt" is written by Trent Reznor. (Nine Inch Nails.)

Well said. Thank you.
beautiful song...calm.n soothing
Once again Stetsonman proving what an idiot and a self centered asshole he is…. Mazzy Star is fantastic. Love this

So sorry to hear of David Roback's passing.
Beautiful music!
RIP David Roback. I'm glad you got to live the musician life
RIP David

You're wrong, here in Burgundy we drink only good vines, with respect and moderation, with a good meal. I invite her to dinner.
Hmmm....now what could this song be about?

I'm gonna put something in you
Make the devil feel surprised
All your sisters wanna fly
Around my golden sky

Great song by Hope Sandoval...as usual.

That's an odd song to think of; the guitar arpeggio is somewhat reminiscent though now that you mention it.

Nice album, but Rhymes of an Hour is tops, IMHO.
I was close to take the 3 Am downtown train
But jumped the gun, and took in my surroundings
I'd that funny feeling of being followed
Just didn't know if it was my sister or the Jesus
Anyways, I'm gonna put someone in you
And make the devil feel surprised.
Hell wil be looking for the forest from trees
For quite long time to come.
most beautiful and timeless.
My only problem with Mazzy Star is all the songs sort of sound the same. Not a lot of range from song to song. You really need to be in the right mood to fully appreciate their music.
Depressive and above all she drank his wine, not good!
...love the melancohlia she is able to imply...
I know exactly what you mean, & it drives my engine so much!  I've concluded it far healthier to celebrate the lamentation than regret it.

Or maybe, fondness that I'm not broken after all.

Beautiful - Simple - Powerful.......Perfect!
Thought this was Kristen Hersh at first.
Plucking sounds from a guitar                                         gently wonderful                                      simple

Until this song I'd have joined you in that minority. This is the first Mazzy Star song which isn't an automatic Ho-Hum, perhaps because Hope Sandeval actually sounds awake on this song and not as if she's just necked a bunch of downers and needs to go bye-byes. 7 from the Nottingham jury.

This is a great album (the band's best of their small catalogue).  However, I think "I've Been Let Down" is a better introduction to this album.

Amen to that! I tried explaining that to a good friend who used to accuse me of listening to "depri music", alas to no avail.

This is a good song to sleep!!!

"Happy" music always made me think more about suicide - e.g., The Carpenters, Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy", disco-era BeeGees, etc.  Incessantly hearing that kind of stuff often made me more depressed than I already was; at least this sort of music made me feel like I could relate to it in some way - like there was someone else out there who got it.  I guess that's just me.
Music to sleep and\or commit suicide too!{#Sleep}
...this album (and so tonight i might see) sound absolutely stunning on reference-grade monitors; incredible production, both...
"it all falls away, and if you've made your peace, those birds are angels, ready to take you to heaven"
a favorite....lovely!!

nice nice nice song ....

matías
I'm trying so hard to stay awake...
i remember being compared to this performer many times....meanwhile time has passed and there's a bit more grit in my voice.
i absolutely fall over
everytime i hear Mazzye
every time
her voice , her lyrics.....that makes the song 100%
no doubt, one of the most amazing performers!
simply lovely......  -   7.

Hope Sandoval.  She sings as she looks.

  Vice versa, might be?

The voice & style remind me of Kerstin Hersh - unluckily, for I grew tired of her.

Love this voice.  Also see Hope Sandoval Bavarian Fruit Bread.  Possibly even better than Mazzy Star.

I have never heard anyone say that.  Usually when you hear "______ Rules" it's like Black Sabbath or Metallica or somebody.  But Mazzy Star?

She sings as she looks
Hope Sandoval.  She sings as she looks.

Lovely, from the soul, and haunting. This one may have pushed me over the edge to buy a Mazzy album.
I love visiting a non-provincial way of thinking...such as this.
I want this disk.
to my dear soul sister EK among my swan all ways, ever! Is solace anywhere more comforting than in the arms of a sister. ~Alice Walker
Probably one of my desert island disks...very soothing, very calming. Good way to wind up the day. I don't know much about them, but I hope they/she will put out some more music someday.

Interesting to see this post. Hearing this, my mind thought of 9/11 but the only reason I can think why is because the guitar reminds me of a peice of music played in Michael Moore's film, im not sure though, anyone else thought similar or maybe know for sure?

I was a Mazzy Star fan back in the day. I saw Hope and the band a few years back, and (at least at the time) she was beautiful yet so ghostlike & detached that it detracted from her intrigue--- and caused me concern for her mental/physical health. :(

I can only imagine what that must have been like. This is a fantastic song.

Yet again introduced to something new by RP. I like it.
Hypno-entrancing, lyrical and smooth. I like it.

by "her' do you mean 'their'? It is a band, not someone named "Mazzy" and obviously you haven't heard much by them if you think it is all the same.
pure brilliant a deaf person would be moved from the vibe alone
Wow. As always, wow. Fan since the early 90's.
cool, a stoner tune...
Hope Sandoval has an amazing voice. The minimal sound makes her voice stand out more. Chilling.
gorgeous and subtle :curtain.gif:
Mmmmm, Hope Sandoval.... the things she does to me.

While somewhat depressing, it's a breath of fresh air after having to endure The Kinks and The Who in the last hour.
Are things REALLY that boring at Purdue, or are you just that socially inept, that you have to be here trashing two classics? Don't you have some boy band to go worship? If not, offer something more substantive than "Kinks stink," or go away. Great mix of tunes tonight, Bill. Thanks. This tune is no exception.

i don't find this depressing at all... definitely sets a mood but not depressing.
Sounds like a perfect song for 4:30am, too bad it's 1:30pm here . But anyway: Great. Now I'm depressed.
That's odd, I could have sworn this was Kristin Hersh. And I like it, not a lot but I Like it.
*puts yet another pot of coffee on...*
oh Lord not this woman again... and on a Friday afternoon when I am trying to get psyched for the weekend... *reaches for the No-Doze*
I do like some of her stuff, but I have to say; Heroin is bad for you.
good Lord someone get me a cup of coffee and get her some Prozak
Very nice when I\'m in the right mood (like now).
sucks
I usually like her, but I\'m not feeling it this morning.
Same, same and more sameness. All of her songs sound the same.
So when does this funeral end?
 time to go to sleep...
Imagined late one night: Please, Hope, could we play just ONE rocker for our album? Just ONE? No, dammit, take your Valiums and siddown! 20 Beats per minute is the most I'll allow you!
Wow!
It is so nice to hear some \"deeper cuts\" from Mazzy Star\'s CDs -- not just the one or two songs that received scattered radio play years ago! Thanks!
Continually yummy. :)
