LLDOB was and still remains a classic 2 LP disc; this version is, frankly, quite boring to the hilt. Post-Gabriel Genesis was good for two lps, after that, might as well listen to Earth-Wind-and Fire.
I always thought it was peter singing in this version... Scary

Each time I hear this version I lower my rating. The original is great, especially because it IS original. This is a rehash where Phil Collins gets to cover the song with his usual distinctive pop sound. Nothing wrong with Phil's sound mind you, I often enjoy it. But everything he does sounds the same and in this he removes anything from the track that made the original distinctive (or maybe it's as simple as Phil Collins is NOT Peter Gabriel).
It's called Phil Collinization, by the way. He's done it to so many great names. He reduced Clapton to junk for a couple of LPs too

Sad, but often true. I wonder how different things would've been if they'd brought in another singer after Peter Gabriel left ...

I saw Genesis at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago for the Trick Of The Tail tour and I was bummed to miss Gabriel. But they were so awesome !! Chester Thompson (one of the many brilliant drummers with Zappa) helped out on drums so Collins could go center stage. Carpet Crawlers was one of the highlights. Just thought I would share...

This is definitely the only time I could tolerate Phil Collins...the pre-Abacab Genesis era.
Huh. I wonder what (who) else is repetitive and boring? Nice job, slick. A lot of current pop rock is repetitive and boring. This is somewhat repetitive (e.g. not jazz or classical), but it's really nothing to write home about in the boring rankings. Especially multiple times. If you're gonna comment, why not say something interesting and new? I mean, come on... you could have at least counted the repititions. Art_Carnage wrote:

I'm modifying my rating. This is WAYYY too polished... completely devoid of the raw edge and soul of the original. Hell, the symphonic version of this has more heart. I'm giving it a 4 on the merits of the intact band, but please play the other version more than this one.
I keep hearing people moaning about songs being too polished...like good production values are a bad thing. Now over producing and over layering can be a bad thing. But when was the last time you over polished your car? Maybe we should go back to cassettes and 4-tracks for that unpolished sound? uh, no.

Wow. Why does everything Phil Collins does always sound so lifeless? :-s

Phil *does* actually have writing credit for Carpet Crawlers - along with the other three band members. Collins joined in the early '70s (71? 72?) and Gabriel didn't depart until 1975 (Lamb was released in 1974). Now, I agree that 1) the original is better and 2) Phil has become a somewhat dull writer of pop songs, but that does not diminish his contributions to Genesis during those earlier years. And lest we forget, Topper Headon, drummer for the Clash, claims Phil Collins as his favourite drummer.
Maryte, you ain't wrong. Phil is talented, as a songwriter and a drummer. I have nothing derogatory to say about the man-as-artist, unless it's the same criticism to be made of the Stones, which is they didn't quit while they were ahead. My rant is solely focused on this song. While I wholeheartedly agree that Phil and the rest of the band made "Lamb" the earth-shattering masterpiece it is (Banks' keyboards on "Riding the Scree" remain my favorite synth moment of the entire prog-rock genre), it must also be said that without Gabriel, Phil would have had nothing to drum TO on those early albums. Alls I'm saying is, "Carpet Crawlers '99" sucks dead air on a greatest hits album that should have had the guts to include the original cut. It's just plain weird hearing "Crawlers" as a -- gag -- duet.

If Phil is on this, they must be using it for an upcoming Disney movie. That is all he does these days, right? Maybe Lion King 5.
This is about the only time I could tolerate Peter Gabriel, when he was with Genesis.
Awesome song, weird version. Collins is also accomplished, creative and talented. The fact that this is played by Genesis suffices my appetite. NO bashing Collins from me - I have heard the band live with him, and they were all truly awesome.
Just awful. Goes on and on, but never says anything. Boring and tedious.

Version in The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (WITH PETER GABRIEL) Is The Best!!!!
No question Phil and the band sold out in the 80's, but I quite like this version. As much as I think the early Genesis stuff is amazing, am I the only person who thinks the arrangements on the live album "Seconds Out" are superior to the originals?
the original is a master piece... isn't it amazing how the whole Genesis concept turned into the Phil Collins Band? anyway... Marie
I think the jury is still out on this version of the song. Ooooh. There is Phil Collins' voice doubling with Peter G.'s on the bridge. Errrrr. There is something about Phil's voice that just strikes me as wrong for this song. Maybe its been too long since "Mama" or "In The Air Tonight"--hard to see Phil C. doing anything funky and esoteric, or turgidly insane now. I don't mind the instrumental production. The reverb, the slow pulse--the atmospheric wash--its a consistent re-reading. I think I need to hear it a few more times before I decide.
I like the original version of this song, but it is better than not hearing it at all. If you don't have this album, it's a must. A couple of year ago I got the CD to replace the original vinyl that I bought in '76.
This is crap Please play the original "Lamb"-Version ...

Yep, the Phil Collins sound. Slick, polished, cold, void of emotion.
I love this version produced by trevor horn. Awesome song!

RP should just play the full Lamb double album and be done with it. Played individually, some of the songs do have the "go nowhere" problem, but in context...it's great.

So I’m wondering if, to get out, you’ve gotta get in? I like Peter Gabriel’s solo stuff, what I’ve heard of it. But I can’t see the attraction of Genesis.

And what age is that?? You mean people over 50 is not able to play and sing??
I though you would never play this song here, there are so many good tracks from "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", please play more tracks from Genesis
If you read the credits on both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins albums, you'll see the two actually have worked together from time to time. The drums on 'Biko' and 'Games' for instance, are Phil Collins. It'd be so cool if they'd release new material with this lineup. It's really cool how this song sounds like a Peter Gabriel and Genesis song. Their voices go together well. alanb wrote:

RP played the original last week, and I've been wanting to hear this version since. Thanks Bill.
I can dig some old Genesis from time to time, but this one just needs to be retired already. It's not very interesting to start with, and then it proceeds to go nowhere. Isnt there something else in the library that we can substitute for this one. seems to be in pretty high rotation lately.

Not half as good as THE live version........passable....
I got to see the Seconds Out tour stop at Saratoga 'back in the day'. Can't say it ruined any studio version I later heard, but it was easily one of the most awesome events I ever witnessed of any kind. Dance on a Volcano anyone? Chuck

Man, I must have been under a rock for the past few years, because I didn't even know this album had been done. (And I'm an alleged Genesis fan.) That's what I get for not hanging out at record stores anymore. Looks like I'll need to click over to Amazon and see about getting this CD. I like this version as well as the differen previous versions; they each have their on merits. It's great to hear Peter and Phil together.
GENESIS FOREVER!

The "traditional" lineup (Banks, Collins, Gabriel, Hackett, Rutherford) got back together to re-record this track for the greatest hits CD.

Ih. The original completely smokes this version. Besides, without the "Lamb" album, it's being sung "out of context".
I AGREE TOTALLY! HOWEVER, IT IS NICE TO SEE PETER BACK IN THE GROUP AGAIN.
Definately an old favorite.....a song of historical proportions.
One of my faves - but not nearly as good as the original. Still, always great to hear anything from Lamb. PG, and the old gang rule! btw, I love the \'Genesucks\' comment - quite clever, I suppose - for some.
What a great track to hear on RP! Yes, somewhat of a sell out, and the production did mix out some great contributions, but hearing this version always makes me pause and reflect on just how great this song is. Never expected to hear it on here yet it fits just fine.
Peter & Phil sound damn fine together. Great choice.
Great track!!!
Nice choice. Play more \'lamb\'
excellent choice :D
THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY was Genesis' greatest work IMHO. Genesis genius...
The Seconds Out version is more alive (no pun intended). One of my favorite album covers too.
Caught PG at the Oakland Coliseum on his 12/02 tour. Man, the guy still puts on a great show at his age. UK art rock is not dead yet!

That is such a great line. Lamb Lies Down is such a great concept album - probably the best of its kind.
this is a great song. you all can just bite me. LOL
Perhaps the internet will help us grow emotionally. I think we need it.

Collins may have been more popular than Genesis at his peak, but I'm not sure if that occured after he left Genesis. As for Pete, let's just remember, it took a Genesis reunion to rescue him from the debt of the first WOMAD. And I don't believe he had the ability to sell out Wembley on his own. But So is a better album than Invisible Touch. As for this song. I like the Seconds Out Version better myself. Kevin
I still like the original and the live version from Seconds Out better.

The original is better, but this one is still awesome.
Is this not proof od the magic these guys have when they all play together??? Man, they need to wake up, shake the egos off and start making more great music together!!!!!!!!
