Well, it was nearly summer, we sat on your roof
Yeah, we smoked cigarettes and we stared at the moon
And I showed you stars you never could see
Babe, it couldn't have been that easy to forget about me

Baby, time meant nothing, anything seemed real
Yeah, you could kiss like fire and you made me feel
Like every word you said was meant to be
No, it couldn't have been that easy to forget about me

Baby, even the losers
Get lucky sometimes
Even the losers
Keep a little bit of pride
They get lucky sometimes

Two cars parked on the overpass
Rocks hit the water like broken glass
I shoulda known right then it was too good to last
God, it's such a drag when you live in the past

Baby, even the losers
Get lucky sometimes
Even the losers
Keep a little bit of pride
They get lucky sometimes

Baby, even the losers
Get lucky sometimes
Even the losers
Keep a little bit of pride
Yeah, they get lucky sometimes

Baby, even the losers
Get lucky sometimes
Even the losers
Get lucky sometimes

Even the losers
Get lucky sometimes

His later stuff wasn't as driven as the early tunes. Man, he was great then.
Bought this album when i was 16, in London. So glad to bring it back in France, we were dancing on "Even the loser". A great album.
first rock concert of my life, 1981 - thanks tom, still love you!!
Looking forward to the 'Great Gig in the Sky' later in my life.
Having missed Green Day in 2006/7 I opted for them upon the announcement of their headlining BST especially with The Living End and The Damned on the bill. Little was I to know that TP would announce headlining the following week but I'd already reserved my GD tix - it was to be his final UK gig! Biggest regret ever...
Yes, I would say that Petty played over 20% of the time in the soundtrack to my youth!  RIP for all it's worth. "It seems a shame to have to work so hard and nothing ever seemstocomes from it"  (ok, i didn't check the exact lyrics, but)  Well Tom, A hell of a lot of good stuff was brought to the world from your work! You changed our world with your writing!

I saw Tom Petty at the US Festival in 1982.  I was telling myself for the past year or so that I really had to see him again one of these days after all these years.  He had such an amazing run for a rock musician--one of the longest.  Then, just a few months before he passed away I was all set to see him again (finally) at a local venue and my friend flaked at the last minute so I didn't go, not knowing the implications.  I regret missing that show so much now :(

Dude, I feel so badly for you!  I got to see him at the Verizon Amphitheater in Atlanta, maybe 2007? With Winwood joining him! I was clapping so hard all night, in the lawn most of the time, that I had to remove my 3/4 oz wedding ring cuz of the pain.. Woke up the next morning with no ring in my pocket, So, on the way back home to my wife in Charleston, SC. I stopped at the amphitheater and miraculously had my platinum wedding band in my possetion!!! Sentimental AND a grand!  I miss Petty so badly that I can still cry.

I miss him so much!

The soundtrack to the summer of 1980 for me.
Amazing song, great songwriter {#Notworthy}
R.I.P Tom; you were no loser!
My favorite Petty song!!
An American classic. This song will last forever.
The wife and I recently saw TP at the Ottawa Bluesfest 2017 — an epic show by an epic force of rock.

RIP TP

This album has a huge sound. I first heard it on a friend's Magnapan loudspeakers powered with Audio Research tube amps and of course it was vinyl. The producer was ________?

Jimmy Iovine.  Or "Jimmy Shoes" as he was known as back in the day.

Jimmy Iovine

Jimmy Iovine? Or was he just the engineer? Without googling, that's my guess.
Either way, they just re-released all his albums on 180g vinyl and my copy of Damn the Torpedoes arrived this week. It's mighty sweet, start to finish.

So many good memories from this album.  Saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tour this ablum in 1980 at the Palace Theatre in St Kilda  with my best friend's sister; alas it was never to be.  What a great show!
Excellent song man, this puts me in a speeding, rusty late 70's mopar demon with the cassette deck blasting this wicked piece

Yep, it's aged pretty well. I saw Tom & the HB's in '79 touring this album. Great show. Who'da guessed he'd still be gettin' it done 30 years later?!

37 years later... he still be gettin' it done!!

Can't wait for Mudcrutch at the 9:30 club in June.
A beer and a sunny back porch go well with this song.
New CD and tour this Spring!!!!!
My theme song in the early 80s...I lived this.
Best TP song ever...{#Bananajam}

19 here, but yeah....bought this my Freshman year in college....
50% Dylan + 50% Springsteen = Tom Petty (shaken not stirred)

...and the rockstar glamour. Petty could look like the south end of a northbound hippo and he'd still attract fans and groupies I'm sure. He does have a distinct doggy look on that album cover, though.

It's just the normal noises in here......

Echoing the sentiments of many on this song - it sounds better as time progresses.  Campbell, Tench and Petty make up a potent 1-2-3 punch for guitar, keyboards and vox.  Much appreciation to these guys.

Don't understimate the value of simply being a musician.  It's cliche but I believe it's true.  My short-lived time in a band was 180 degrees different than the rest of my life in regards to meeting women.  Being a GOOD musician probably makes it even stronger ;)

love the "campbell-ized" berry solos. or is that the "berry-ized" campbell solos?

Yes. His solo on "Refugee" is one of the finest ever. I love his posture in the video—half Keith Richard, half Mick Jones, two guys who know axe-slinging and posturing...

The B side of the 45 was the song Casa Dega, which was quite good too.
Tom Petty is a guilty pleasure for me.  I like his music more as the years go by.

ahhh.....like a good port after a good meal....nice on occassions.
Lord, listen to how young he sounds.
"Even the losers?" That about says it!
Boy, does this song sound out of place at RP.
The definition of pop-rock. Not classic rock. Great album...

That is one overplayed song! Isn't there anything else good on this CD or is it all "classic rock" overplayed?
lousiana rain, shadow of a doubt and century city are really good i think. and even if it is classic rock and overplayed, its still a great "album", and its not overplayed on RP.

Love that Rickenbacker on the cover.
When this song came out, we used to do EXACTLY this: "It was nearly summer We sat on your roof. We smoked cigarettes and we stared at the moon. I showed you stars You never could see.... It couldn't of been that easy To forget about me." BEAUTIFUL!

One of his best. Maybe because back then his words seemed to speak just to me. Well, it's been a while and thank god, yeah, I've been lucky. Here's to you, Tom
Tom, still rockin after all these years......this was close to the beginning and IMHO holds up extremely well over the years......ROCK ON TP&TH!!!
Classic Tom Petty... brings back a lot of memories.
Well crafted pop from Petty. And still fresh sounding.
This is a great one by one of the best. I just heard he's touring with the Allman Brothers this summer and they're coming close to me. WOW, that's going to be a great show. Gotta go get my tickets.
Tom is one of my all time favourites & this one is a true classic!!!
Sweet! Awesome music today!
This is Tom Petty's best record by far.
His music never lets me down.
a boat-load of nostalgia for me. I enjoy this still...once a year or so.
