Talk to you and do be nice
You won't take the doctors advice
You know I'm suffering with the flu
The doctor tell ya what I have to do
And now you tell me that you don't agree
With what the doctor tell you to give me

Gimme Da Ting that the doctor order me - Gimme Da Ting
Gimme Da Ting that the doctor order me - Gimme Da Ting
Gimme Da Ting that the doctor order me - Gimme Da Ting
Gimme Da Ting that the doctor order me - Gimme Da Ting

Call me girl, I want to know
Why you have been suffering so
Can't you see that I'm very sick
I really must get better quick
Now you stop your foolin' about
Cause all that medicines down inside me mouth (Chorus)

All the while so
It's a really black medicine
You know I must have it to survive
Do you want me to stay alive
Now you do what the doctor said
One teaspoon before I go to bed (Chorus)

Stop me now I'm losing me voice
And this is my only choice
I beg you please give me a dose
Me vocal chords is getting worse
Just a little bit to ease the pain
The only thing to make me sing again (Chorus)

Bill,

A good one to follow this would be Harry Nilsson's "Coconut".

Needless to say so please don't!
Can’t stand this
Ting!
"Can I see the prescription?"
So sad to hear of his passing. A consummate virtuoso on the slide guitar who effortlessly lit the strings on fire with his gift. Saw him 3 times, twice with his whole band and was mesmerized and converted after the 1st time. I had a nice chat with him last time he played Hugh's Room in Toronto, such a professional and a nice guy. RIP David.

There is a time and place for all kinds of music. I like David Lindley as he is a very talented guitarist and has a knack for catchy songs. But mostly because he seems to enjoy himself and have fun on the recordings I have heard from him. He is just as worthy as Dylan or Mitchell.

Having said that, I would get bored listening to him all day... I think Bill has just the right balance of music, so please do not play less Dylan and Mitchell ;-)

I mean, that's what listen it for in the end, right? Unless you have a good reason to care about other people's taste (or image they're trying to maintain).

I kinda agreed this actually, but I don't know exactly why, it just didn't touch me. It could very well just be this particular moment, it is what it is
What a fun track! RIP Prince of Polyester.

Now checking out the Lord Kitchener original which is bound to lead down a calypso rabbit hole. Damn you RP!
5.6?  Are you kidding?

This is a Calypso by Lord Kitchener who was a Trinidadian calypsonian. There are a lot of low ratings concerning this tune which I think is attributed to the fact that most don't understand what "da 'ting" is. Many, (if not all Calypsos), have a sexual connotation to them, so you can take it from there. Yes, it's different, but after living in the Virgin Islands in my 20's and hearing this music in it's element it  certainly grew on me. David does an excellent job with it.

He's pretty dern worthy on his own.  He has been playing with Jackson Browne (since 1972), also with  Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Warren Zevon, Dolly Parton and Curtis Mayfield (for starters).  He has is own cred!  One of my favorites of all time!  If you can find one, watch a documentary on him, he's an engima.
For krine out loud, give him "Da 'Ting"!   LOL!   GREAT TUNE!!
Always meks meh heppy to hear Mr. Dave!

I first encountered Mr. Dave when I was in college in Claremont, CA where he lives - he played one of our 5-college parties with some incarnation of his El Rayo X band, and I was instantly taken by his commanding skills on anything stringed (steel, Weissenborn, saz, fiddle, you name it), and of course his ample and quirky sense of humor.  I used to bump into him in local Claremont stores like Wolfe's market, and I can say he is a genuinely nice human being, as anyone in town would attest.  Since then I've caught him live all over the country and it is always an amazing show.  Assuming he resumes touring in 2021, I highly recommend his shows, which usually consist of just him and a dozen or so stringed instruments, and plenty of hilarious stories.  Rock on Mr. Dave.

I remember seeing Mt. Dave in a "hole-in-the-wall" bar in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh. The place was PACKED!! and he entered from behind the back bar in the balcony and squeezed down the stairs to the stage. As he sat putting in his ear monitors, he looked up and deadpanned, "It looks like a fire hazard in here." Looked back down and fiddled with his monitors a moment and then, looking up, said equally dryly, "That'll fuck with some people's minds."

So, yes, he's a great entertainer.

Hi.  I actually really like Gimme Da'Ting, and I was googling around because I couldn't determine elsewhere whether David Lindley actually wrote it, or if it was from someone else.  I am using it in a song list I'm making in Rhapsody Online, and I wanted to see if I could get another name for it, because Lindley's cover/recording of it is the only one I've found.

I find it odd that some posters don't like the song that much.  I find it very good.  Perhaps it takes that Sears Roebuck taste.  At any rate, I find all of Lindley's stuff very enjoyable, and generally a good dose of what I think of as reality.  My story of Lindley is my friend Phil, a serious Dead fan, taking me and the Rayo dog to Pacific Beach for a rest (and to buy his pickup I think) the Summer I was trying to divorce my future ex-wife, whom I now count as a very dear, but thankfully distant friend, and still one of the most beautiful women I've ever known too, if that matters (it really doesn't to me, but it's good story material).   He played me Very Greasy, which he had on CD, and I was immediatly hooked, though oddly my favorite track at that time was Tiki Torches at Twilight.  Now I think "Pay the man" is, but frankly I so far enjoy all his stuff.  Anyway, I now work on the Rhapsody Online project and listen to more music than I thought I ever would, and I find Lindley one of my favorites. Enough lavishment of praise though.

So I want to know if Gimme is really written by David, and even so if it has any other heritage, which somehow I think it does.  Can someone help me on that?  Can I get some spelling for any alternate tracks?

If you're still interested Xeno, this is a remake of an Antiguan calypso song by an artist called Lord Kitchener.

I'm all about fun these days - mostly because I'm not having much of it. I really wanted to dance to this song, but the back will barely let me WALK, much less dance. I fear I may need - GASP! - a trip to a chiropractor. Please send donations, as I can barely afford to put gas in my vehicle to get me to and from work.

Oh, what the heck - I'll break-dance anyway. This is just too good a song to NOT dance to, even if dancing means a trip to the ER...

No, it's an old Lord Kitchener song - you could call it "classic soca" - "Gimme De Ting" or "Gee Me The Ting" is how you can google it; here's a youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcOpbtGeTsM

... but no real video, just a travel poster.

And here's a different recording with a different feel, and real, real cool (this is the one I heard way back when when I got turned on to it) - check the bari sax:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gawMF6PQPuU&feature=related

The El Rayo X vibe on this song is cool but not quite authentic - but so what?  The production is clear and the playing is hip (though Kitchener's bass player does less and plays it groovier) - the best thing in it for me is the percussion.  Usually, playing every instrument in the kit is a weakness, but this guy is really driving the song - and, if you can dig this, he's matching the sophisticated wit of the song with his playing (great sounding cymbals, too), and he's nicely up in the mix and gets a wide pan, too.

I also "find it very good".  Good luck!

You were on a roll then this started playing. craptastic.
I agree that David Lindley is a great slide guitar player, but I doubt all the great slide players past and present could salvage this song. I got yer "ting" right here, buddy . . . ;)
Sheesh, don\'t be so hard on Lindley. I do believe he is one of the better slide players to ever grace that instrument. He\'s right up there with the guys from Los Lobos as my favortie musicians of all time. Ok I have to share a story here - I carried out the rider on a David Lindley contract in the late 80s. I completely bore everyone with this story at the drop of a hat, now it\'s your turn. I picked them up in the student union van at their hotel, took them to the restaurant. We had one whole floor to ourselves and the guys became very animated. No heirarchy here, the 1 roadie on the tour was there, and they let me sit next to David. Polyester was discussed: David to the slightly hefty roadie \"you\'d be a dangerous weapon in polyester\". But the conversation that actually changed my life was the one they had about music criticism. The Cuban drummer just ripped in to critics \"they are students, they don\'t know anything ... they hire no-nothings to write about us.\" Everyone agreed. I remember that moment like yesterday, because at the time I happened to be the writing music reviews for the local paper. I haven\'t ever written about music since, it was way too close to home. The rest of the evening continued from the banal to the bizarre (forgot to tip the restaurant; David smelling the bread in the dressing room; groupie propositioning David; me too drunk to drive the guys back to their hotel; discussion about Jamaican politics; and the kicker, did I mention that the whole time it was -25 outside? They loved that!)
"You're Being a Dink" HAHAHAHAH! now that might make it at least humorous. (ps - album title correction: "Very Cheesey")
David Lindley is great. This is a silly song to be sure, but he does it so well. And my kids love it.
