Wadin' through the waste stormy winter,
And there's not a friend to help you through.
Tryin' to stop the waves behind your eyeballs,
Drop your reds, drop your greens and blues.
Thank you for your wine, California,
Thank you for your sweet and bitter fruits.
Yes I got the desert in my toenail
And I hid the speed inside my shoe.
I want you to come on, come on down Sweet Virginia,
I want you come on, honey child, I beg of you.
I want you come on, come on down, you got it in you.
(honey child)
Got to scrape the shit right off you shoes.
But Come on, come on down Sweet Virginia,
Come on, honey child, I beg of you.
Come on, come on down, you got it in you.
(honey child)
Got to scrape that shit right off you shoes.
But Come on, come on down Sweet Virginia,
Come on, honey child, I beg of you.
Come on, come on down, you got it in you.
(honey child)
Got to scrape that shit right off you shoes.

Doesn't look like everyone was on board with this shoot.  ;-)
The Rolling Stones, once again, copying American music.  I love it!    ;-)

at thier shit-kicking best
excellent. Never heard this version before.
My kids have been singing along with this song since they were in diapers...

Another one with pretty funny lyrics. 1965... who would have guessed this was the Stones?

R.I.P Bobby Keys.  They have a new live sax player who is quite good, but Bobby's presence and swagger were definitely missing from the performance when I saw them recently in Quebec City.  Still a great show, though.
After reading Keith Richards' auto bio I have a new appreciation for the Stones.
Thanks Mick...I'm going to head outside right now and clean my shoes!

My point is that it's difficult to determine if the newer material will stand on it's own in 30 or 40 years. It's also difficult to view The Stones careers objectively because we don't have that luxury of hindsight yet. I suspect that in 15 years, when The Rolling Stones will have obviously retired and likely will be dead, some of these cynical 'age-ism' perceptions might seem less relevant in comparison to their entire body of work. They are still quite creative, and most of their recent material, IMO, is not contrived at all, but genuine attempts to produce meaningful sounds. Whether you agree with that or not doesn't matter; what matters is that these guys still think the work is important and clearly are physically capable of producing it at the same level of energy and enthusiasm. I don't think any of their post-Steel Wheels material was 'phoned-in'. Love it or hate it, but why be so cynical about it? Remember, Mick and Keith haven't needed to record since at least 1989, since the Steel Wheels tour set them all into kazillionaire status. The other band members don't even make much money from album sales. It's the tours that rakes in the real money for all of them, and they could easily have toured for the last 20 years as a greatest hits package. But they didn't. Honestly, the people that think the Stones are ridiculous are just unable to tear themselves away from the music they made earlier on. It's almost 2008, get over the 60's and 70's, please. The Stones have.

Bravo!  Well said.
I lubs this song. 10
One of my fav songs from this band! Exellent album btw.

Chuck Leavell on piano. I'd say "keys" except one might confuse it with Bobby, "He's playing Bobby Keys?!" And Don Was plays the organ, another possibility for confusion.
The sax (Bobby Keys) and the piano playing are wonderful.
"Got to scrape that shit right off your shoes..." Amen to that, brother. Fabulous rendition from an amazing band. Reminds me to tee up Stripped one day soon.

An underrated country band, in my view.

I watched Gimme Shelter last night - what an interesting bit of time captured on film. If you haven't seen it, see it for the documentary aspects rather than just seeing the Stones perform. If you're expecting to JUST see the Stones perform, you'll be disappointed. Great flick - I was actually so interested in the whole Altamont deal that I watched it again with the commentary on and learned a heap about the tragedy.

Is this to say that the Stones should stop recording? or perhaps stop performing altogether? I'm sure you don't mean that there comes a time in any artist's career when, absent the creation of meaningful new works, he or she is obligated to die.
Stripped is the best Stones record since 'Some Girls'. After 'Stripped' they only released meaningless mainstream stuff, ain't I right?
Never too old to Rock & Roll!

This is one of my absolute favorite Stones songs, but for some reason, I REALLY like the we're-drunk-as-eighteen-f*cks-with-all-our-buddies-in-a-studio version from Exile. Not that this isn't great, but it's a little like hearing someone who can actually sing cover Dylan. Something's off.
Stones are best doing blues and alt. Country. They have a huge catalouge- of course there are going to be duds. Exile is the best of the blues. love that raw production. They must be doing something right, have you seen the chicks mick hangs with ?!

Ahh, somebody beat me to it. Something about scraping ... Great tune, love to perform it, from a band I've been listening too for far too long. Haven't bought anything new since black and Blue, but still enjoy listening.

Well, sorry, I'm not ready to write them off just yet, tho' I was largely disappointed with The Bigger Bang, like most of their studio stuff of the last decade. But they can still bring it live. Downright scary sometimes. This cut's proof.
wondertoofar is correct. We should simply shoot or perhaps place in internment camps anyone over the age of 45 (Age of Mick Jagger during start of Steel Wheelchair tour). Yea Stones stink, I like Arctic Monkeys, but next year I will like the next big hyped thing.

I've been thinking the same for years - but have been amazed at the following. I guess I shouldn't be surprised because there are still folks who are stuck dressing in clothes from a past era as well. They love their polo shirts and white tennis shoes... I, personally, wouldn't miss hearing the Stones ever again because it was totally overplayed in the past 2 or three decades.
This whole album is awesome... it has the greatest version of Wild Horses

Have you seen a show on the current tour? Hardly dinosaurs; they play with great energy.. There is a reason they fill stadiums at big bucks... it's an amazing performance.

"It's the Stones, Jim, but not as we know it" Not their strongest song by a far cry, IMHO. :grumpy.gif:

I'm 25, and thankful that I've seen them live at least once. Believe me, it was a good show, with a lot of energy.
Exile on Main Street was a great album that was perhaps overlooked by most people on the Classic Rock track. I think there was only one "hit" on the album, but there were a lot of great tunes on the album like this one!

You're passing up some great music. You're not alone in that, most people (even some Stone's fans) overlooked Black and Blue (1976) and Some Girls (1978). These records had their faults (bandwagon-jumping mostly, reggae in the case of Black & Blue and disco in the case of Some Girls) but there's some awesome music in there. Black & Blue was Ron Woods' first album with the band, and he absolutely smoked. Some Girls was written on or about the time Mick Jagger's wife left him, and his troubles provoked some fine songwriting. Since then they've kinda coasted, but there was still a little steam in the boiler after '72.
Well, it's true that with their immense status they could've start living off the success after the early seventies. But fortunately they were challenged again by Disco and Punk in the late seventies. Already then they were called dinosaurs Since then updating their sound a bit by choosing the right producers and studios seemed enough. Music wise that is, but that's all that matters in the end. Conforming to their age and experience they're in many respects a lot more well balanced and professional then they ever were, which (in their case) doesn't neccesarily mean more exciting and dynamic! Obviously that generation of musicians is very tough and hard to beat. For instance their last tour was still more intensive than U2's (who's members could be their sons).

"thanks four your wine"
I think the Stones would prolly be first to admit they are more enteratainers than artists these days. But then again you never know, they could make some "sittin on a bar stool chicago blues" record some day and peeps will be worshipping them all over again. Give 'em another 10 years and we'll see what happens. Thats the blues tradition of Muddy Waters, etc.
Drop your reds. Drop your greens and blues. Shit yes!
Wait a minute. Can you say "shit" on the radio? :-k

There was a time before they existed. It was pretty dull as I recall. I can't think of any other MerseyBeat era bands that can still sell out arenas. I wonder how much stuff, from '72 and before, that they still have stashed in the can, unreleased. Probably even some good stuff from those glory days that has never been aired. Maybe some of us fogies like us because they were innovative and moved the music from point a to point b, and did it well. You can hardly beat them for being prolific.
