My point is that it's difficult to determine if the newer material will stand on it's own in 30 or 40 years. I suspect that in 15 years, when The Rolling Stones will have obviously retired and likely will be dead, some of these cynical 'age-ism' perceptions might seem less relevant in comparison to their entire body of work. Remember, Mick and Keith haven't needed to record since at least 1989, since the Steel Wheels tour set them all into kazillionaire status. The other band members don't even make much money from album sales. It's the tours that rakes in the real money for all of them, and they could easily have toured for the last 20 years as a greatest hits package. But they didn't. Honestly, the people that think the Stones are ridiculous are just unable to tear themselves away from the music they made earlier on. It's almost 2008, get over the 60's and 70's, please. The Stones have.

I watched Gimme Shelter last night - what an interesting bit of time captured on film. If you haven't seen it, see it for the documentary aspects rather than just seeing the Stones perform. If you're expecting to JUST see the Stones perform, you'll be disappointed. Great flick - I was actually so interested in the whole Altamont deal that I watched it again with the commentary on and learned a heap about the tragedy.

This is one of my absolute favorite Stones songs, but for some reason, I REALLY like the we're-drunk-as-eighteen-f*cks-with-all-our-buddies-in-a-studio version from Exile. Not that this isn't great, but it's a little like hearing someone who can actually sing cover Dylan. Something's off.
Stones are best doing blues and alt. Country. They have a huge catalouge- of course there are going to be duds. Exile is the best of the blues. love that raw production. They must be doing something right, have you seen the chicks mick hangs with ?!

Well, sorry, I'm not ready to write them off just yet, tho' I was largely disappointed with The Bigger Bang, like most of their studio stuff of the last decade. But they can still bring it live. Downright scary sometimes. This cut's proof.

I've been thinking the same for years - but have been amazed at the following. I guess I shouldn't be surprised because there are still folks who are stuck dressing in clothes from a past era as well. They love their polo shirts and white tennis shoes...
I, personally, wouldn't miss hearing the Stones ever again because it was totally overplayed in the past 2 or three decades.

Have you seen a show on the current tour? Hardly dinosaurs; they play with great energy.. There is a reason they fill stadiums at big bucks... it's an amazing performance.

I'm 25, and thankful that I've seen them live at least once. Believe me, it was a good show, with a lot of energy.
Exile on Main Street was a great album that was perhaps overlooked by most people on the Classic Rock track. I think there was only one "hit" on the album, but there were a lot of great tunes on the album like this one!

There was a time before they existed. It was pretty dull as I recall. I can't think of any other MerseyBeat era bands that can still sell out arenas.
I wonder how much stuff, from '72 and before, that they still have stashed in the can, unreleased. Probably even some good stuff from those glory days that has never been aired.
Maybe some of us fogies like us because they were innovative and moved the music from point a to point b, and did it well. You can hardly beat them for being prolific.
