If I never hear this song again, in any of its permutations, it will be entirely too soon.

The "Live from Tipitina's" records are cool too, but hard to find. I think they were released in the late 80's. {#Bananasplit}

I like his voice, but all that extra carp he adds is really annoying. Just sing it man, it don't need all your 'stylings' piled on top of it.

The freaking Nevilles show up for another undeserved paycheck. . .

Totally agree - Landreth has a subtlety and a low-key intensity that sends chills up my spine.  The Neville Brothers have their place, but doing "Congo Square" seem sacreligious to me.  They should stick to collaborations with Linda Rondstadt.

"Take a lead from Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether"

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Sonny's version played yesterday, making me realize that this trumped up hollow show piece version is at once weak, overworked, and boring. . .

{#Yawn}

Yep, that's where we kept the tourists so they wouldn't crowd the good venues. There's a lot more to new Orleans than a stupid daiquiri bar in the hallowed old Absinthe House. Home is calling.

loop sax
horrible.
No swing,,lousy sound,drummer hittin the rim all the time,can only give it a nine !{#Drummer}

is this crap music day or what? god I have to turn this off and listen to something else for awhile.

I just really don't like this song. Don't really know why. It grates on me.
I obviously know nothing about anything, 'coz I like the drums AND the cowbells.    The sax I can live without, but overall, toe tappin' good times.
Blah... Much better versions out there, seems the sax player forgot the rest of his notes and just run the same beat over and over.
Not dissing the brothers in general, but this is a 3.

I should also mention, much of the cowbell is Aaron. . . YOU take it away from him (~_^)

although not overly tall, Aaron is an imposing fella.
It is true he was a knee breaker for the local toughs as well.
He got ripped off in his contracts, and longshoreman pay wasn't covering enough.

More cowbellissimo!

JazzFest is a-coming!
ZOMG is this pushing my buttons right now. Time to blow the dust outta those Bose speakers. *cranks the vol with a maniacal cackle*
some really self indulgent solos... let the song sell itself!
AUGH! You're KILLIN' ME! I'm opening kayak.com ... don't make me buy tickets to New Orleans for JazzFest ... DON'T MAKE ME - (click) -- too late...
Alright, now you're just making me homesick.
cool :)
Nope...too overdone for me.

No kidding! This song is overplayed and NOT very representative of the best Nevilles' work.

once, I was out at night riding my bicycle, and I rode past the original Tipitina's(before the fake they had in the Warehouse District. . tis back at the old Tip's again). Someone opened the front door and the sound wave about knocked me off my bike. Tower Of Power had filled the stage and was playing like they were in an arena and the sound wasn't working. This is the real reason N.O. is sinking...the music was vibrating the ground and settling the city into the mud.

I love Horatio Sanz on SNL...he does a hilarious impersonation of Aaron Neville.
Nice one... Btw: How many versions of this song do exist? Billions?
Personally, I like the Little Feat version better.

Fantastic rendition. The horns, especially the sax, give it the driving energy. Outstanding drum solo, too. The percussion overall is great.
If they are playing their drums in Congo Square, why is there so much SAX? ophone.

Saw these guys a couple of years ago at the Monterey Jazz Festival - AMAZING. Although I don't usually like tenors, Aaron's voice that day was like a sweet cornet. Truly gorgeous! I was blown away as we all funked out together.

I believe the verb used was "gnaw" that thing off your face. Fabulous movie, by the way... one of my faves.

Um, that would be Mr. Sax. (click here) BTW, I think this is the first time I've heard the Neville Bros. on RP. Let's have some more!
This is good, but I like Sonny Landreth's version better. This one smokes, but Sonny's burns it to the ground!!
I can't stop thinking how the usual happy time in New Orleans is approaching and how it punctuates who and what isn't there any more. . .

Could you just play this whole CD, please?
Moon's full tonight. Play "Yellow Moon". If you don't. I will have to do so myself....
I add my thanks for the New Orleans sets, Bill. I can't get my mind around the magnitude of the loss, not only in New Orleans but across the whole region struck by Katrina. Music sooths where nothing else can.
loving the New Orleans set here -- helps keep some of the beauty and fun in mind amid all of the horrors. god speed to them.
Thanks for the New Orleans music, Bill. We're thinking of all our friends from that area who have been displaced by Katarina and hoping for a quick rebound from its devastation.
This set is breaking my heart for the 1000th time in the last five days. The loss of New Orleans affects so many of us. Much of the chaos is bleeding over, some of it here in Baton Rouge. Please keep us all in your thoughts. p.s. Fats Domino was found yesterday after being missing in the Crescent City, don't think I can call it the Big Easy anymore.
Might be inundation but no kind of nothin's Goin' on down there Might be demolition but nothin' good is Goin' on down there It's a new time tradition when they shoot their Guns at night in Congo Square <-o<

I just heard this with another artist (can't remember - too many good times in the 80s). This song will never be the same since then. The Nevilles are a force to be reckoned with, though!

Your feelings about Zydeco are like MY feelings on reggae. But, my guess is, there's something we're both missing.... P.S. I hate that mole, too.

right. so it's funky zydeco but without accordian, which is really a melodian, that is definately not chromatic. got it. all these ingrediants look good, smell good and feel good. why argue? sounds like gumbo to me!
Cajun / Zydeco (AMG)

I'm well aware of Charley Pride's work but that has about as much to do with the distancing of Nat King Cole from the Country genre as pointing out that Debbie Boone isn't a Hip Hop artist, but DJ Shadow is. There is a similar "lilt" to Zydeco in this melodic hook of the song, but I've never heard any Zydeco get this funky. And trying to say something is "Zydeco without the accordian" is like calling a string quartet a percussion ensemble. "Zydeco" is the Arcadian(Cajun) name for a specific type of small Accordian(the kind you see many Zydeco artists play). It's where the name of the genre came from.
The reply from Businessgypsy was right on. And for the record, the "cajun accordian" is called a "melodian" and is distinguished from the accordian by it's tuning/scale. An accordian is chromatic, while a melodian is not. Zydeco can definitely contain a melodian, or not....

There's a decent amount of Sonny's stuff on RP, though finding that out requires spelling Mr. Landreth's name correctly. 8-<

If this is Zydeco than Nirvana is Pop. Oh and Nat King Cole is Country. I just can't see how anybody can genuinely think this is Zydeco, let alone trying to catagorize the Nevviles into any ONE musical style, there's just too many influences being pulled from all at once by this band to put them in a single-title AOR-friendly genre. That's part of what makes them so exxcellent, they refuse to be catagorized. Oh, yeah I almost forgot: Jacqe Mo Fina Aye!

Holy cow is this bad. Congo Shite is more like it.
The Neville Bros at their best! Is this a great country, or what?
Anything with a drum solo in it is ok with me. :)
Love that saxophone!
Nice toe-tapper!
Hearing this brought back memories of my trip to N\'Awlins this past May to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, where the Neville\'s closed out the fest as is tradition... JazzFest is awesome - everyone needs to go, if not for the music alone, because the food is incredible!
This gets a 9 because of the drum solo alone.
Yup. That\'s the way (uh huh, uh huh) I like it!

In fact...It ain't Jazz Fest without the Neville Brothers or Dr. John...
