Saw the IGs a couple months back here in Halifax in an auditorium full of white haired lesbians and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. These gals give a good show.
Live versions never quite translate
Seem to be rushing through this ....

All I know is that I used to really like the Indigo Girls, but now I can barely tolerate them. I'm not entirely sure why, but I think it's got something to do with the fact that so many of their songs sound so much alike that they got old very quickly.

Cannot one loath the loathsome without being labeled?   Does the act of loathing require the clueless assignment of a label such as mimicking "hipness" or "misogyny"?  How do you know why people loath?   Moreover, why do you care?

And no, I don't know why I found it necessary to respond except that I loath the Thought Police and things PC in general.

Awesome.  I think they're great also.  Some of the work they've done particularly on their earlier albums (thanks for mentioning their older stuff) shows some fantastic talent, particularly in arrangement and harmonies.

There are very few signer-songwriter pairs around now that can present and perform as well as these two have.

It's great to hear you think so too.  Keep up the good work!

Indigo Girls are great.  Its a great disservice to niche them as "those gay folkies".  I don't see anyone "saying" that here, but its so common in the larger world, I suspect it has alot to do with the disrespect they seem to get.  Like most artists, they have both strong and weak periods, but when they are "on" they are awesome.  Strong melodies, strong lyrics, and they consistently take the effort to do the "harmony" thing.  Get past their labels and you'll find they are the whole package.

Edit:  Wait... just as I was typing this, someone actually applied the label... in a cartoonish way no less.  Thanks for making my point.

...Amazing...
Even though I have never heard this song I instantly knew it was being played by lesbians.  I think it was the lame strumming pattern.

(Too weird)

Perish the thought that someone could elevate their own personal dislike of a song into a general all-encompassing statement about it being, like, the worst song ever in the history of humanity. I'll bet you wouldn't dare say this to the Indigo Girls face to face - they'd eat you alive and spit out the bones.

As a matter of fact, I own a number of Einstürzende Neubauten albums, including "Alles Wieder Offen" and "Ende Neu."  How can you dislike lyrics like "You will find me if you want me in the garden, unless it's pouring down with rain."  I highly recommend them for Radio Paradise.  I find Einstürzende Neubauten neither boring nor discordant.  The same cannot be said for Indigo Girls.  I made the mistake once of buying one of the Indigo Girl's horrible albums because I liked the song "Closer to Fine."  I soon realized my terrible error and hastily destroyed the CD before it could inflict more pain on any other unsuspecting victim.  In response to the comment about being eaten alive by the Indigo Girls: I don't think fear of them is a valid reason to pretend that their music is good.

No wonder you're so lonely, ladies.

Can't particularly warm to them, so I'll offer the following.
Was never a great fan of ME, untill I say her perform on MTV's 'Unplugged'.
Her performance was totally electrifying, to say the least. Respect!
Some nice musicianship here, too.

I specifically logged in to rate this song a 1. I still don't feel satisfied.

Amen. You can find better songs and musicians than this at your local open mic night.

Back in the 90s, when the Indigo Girls were more popular & touring often, I went to a "special" acoustic performance. It was okay, but I liked the full band sound, so the performance wasn't so special for me. The next year, my friends dragged me to another "special" acoustic performance. I was bored. The next two times they performed their "special" acoustic performances, I refused to go. Since then, I've lost my lovin' feeling for their music, when I once truly enjoyed it. I've tried to get back into the Indigo Girls groove, but it just hasn't happened. Are there music counselors out there somewhere?

I've often noticed that. Automatic 2 for being an Indigo Girls song. Very high suck factor. Ahh...Bowie now playing. Feeling much better...
I love the guitar intro. Simple yet powerful. Great sounding live recording. Gives you that 'you are there' feel.
Always have and always will L O V E the Indigo Girls!!!!

Tip to the guys who are clueless to musician's sexual preferences: Never see Indigo Girls as a first date with a beautiful (but conservative) woman who knows nothing about the duo. This was back in the 80's, and it took me almost an hour into the (great) show before I noticed my date wasn't paying any attention to the show and appeared very nervous. Defintely wasn't the right tone for a first (and yes, last) date. Still... love Indigo Girls, and this song.

Aye, daughters of Sappho they be. Ge-arrr.
How amazing that this brilliant song seems to follow very well from The Cure's Harold and Joe. Well done.

THIS SONGS ROCKS!! Indigo Girls, Blue Dykes, whatever you want to call them they are amazing! I have seen them over 20 times and they have never let me down. Must go chow some box now! :)
All this junk about their sexual orientation is just baloney, like worrying about Beck being a Scientologist or whatever. Who gives a shit? That said, I find them to be only mediocre musicians -- their songs all sound a lot alike to me. When I hear this strumming pattern I know it's the Indigo Girls. I just don't know which song.

this album was the soundtrack to my sophomore year in college.
one of my claims to 'i saw them before they were...' was seeing these two perform acoustically for 150 people in a small kansas city club on their first tour - they handed out this live disk for free as you walked in. pretty frickin amazing.
not a huge fan... for some reason they've never really resonated with me, but hey, they seem popular and there's nothing wrong with that. :)
One of the times I saw the Girls play, Amy prefaced this song with something to the effect of ... "This song started out as a ballad ... and then I heard the Replacements..." The 'Mats were a true inspiration in their time. I, too, LOVE this live CD.
Fantastic! I saw them live in '90 or '91, just Amy and Emily wailing on their acoustic guitars. Heavy show.

I assume you mean their fantastic self-titled album (1989) and not the less-compelling live compilation (1995) this track was pulled from, right? In that case, I completely agree. Nomads... might be a close second, but after that they fell off for me. Even this live album couldn't save them, in my mind. Pretty good rendition anyway...definitely livelier than the studio track, though I agree with hcaudill about the shrieking that lessens the recording.
At the risk of establishing myself as the resident live-track-hater here at RP, I have to say that this album epitomizes what I hate most about live recordings. Egged on by the crowd, the Girls lose all restraint and get shrieky and shrill. I love most of their music, but sometimes they persuade themselves that these songs rock when they really don't.
This is like John Cougar Mellencamp in bra and panties. Not sure if the mental image or the catterwauling is worse.

I don't know if you were trying to be funny (unsuccessfully), or if you are being serious and you have been living under a rock for the past 15 years. Either way, your comment fell flat with me. Why does it matter what sexual preference the artist has? Great song. I have not heard this live version before. I like it!
Thank god. A perfect antidote to that annoying, whiny Vyktoria Pratt Keating piece that preceded it.
Hearing this brings back great memories of Fall 1989 and just graduating from college. In fact, I saw Indigo Girls at Tipitina's in New Orleans in September '89. Great show , great time with my friends. Those first 4 IG albums are awesome.

Can't get enough of the acoustic guitar, Emily and Amy's voice combination, great lyrics, powerful themes, and melodies. Saw them at Wolftrap in 1990, terrific; all their CDs are primo.
Heh, you can hear all the women scream when those first guitar chords hit. No question who it's going to be from the first chords. I'm going to dip over to LRC for a minute or two.

I absolutely love this song. The more Indigo Girls, the better!
Great song, great version, great band!!
An anthem - of pissed off'ness and need at the same time. Maybe just for gals - but its for all of us - straight, crooked, confused or flexible!
They don't sound lonely here, but actually a little demented. And pissed off. I'm not sure if this approach is going to help with the loneliness thing.
Yee-haw! A great example of how a song can become even more visceral and raw with the absence of all but a couple of guitars. Great guitar solo work by Emily!

What a raw, amazing version of this tune; the Indigo Girls put it all into every song, live. What\'s with the insults being thrown around? \"Indigo Boys\" indeed.
